to not 'get' air fresheners?

  • most of them they stink
  • are unhealthy
  • no, that is not the fresh smell of a spring meadow
  • they give me a headache
  • are a fire risk (the plug in ones)

ffs open the windows and let air in.

So does anyone have a car one? I saw a car with 8 magic trees hanging from the rear view mirror. Shock
I couldn't have one in the car.

And Hectate, I too could smell a foul smell in our house recently. I smelt it every time I walked down the stairs but could never pin point it or describe what it actually smelt like. Dh and kids could never smell it and I thought I was going mad. Worse, I thought it must be our natural smell!

I never did find it but I don't smell it anymore. I hope I'm not just used to it...it was horrible.

We have carpets that were here when we moved in so they're at least 7 years old, so that's the next job I want to get done. Never know what's lurking in them there fibres. [confused}

we don't have an external window in our bathroom.

I think you would "get" air fresheners if you went in there after my DH Wink

MousyMouse · 20/09/2012 14:57

the matches trick really works for poo smells

doesn't your windowless bathroom have an extractor fan? that is nearly as good as opening a window.

it does but it's really crap. I do find Oust is the best solution

starfishmummy · 20/09/2012 14:59

My MIL has air fresheners all over the place. I used to think it was because of their smelly dog, but he died several years ago and the air fresheners are still there. She just buys cheap ones, they are horrible.

She puts them on the floor - by the fireplace, on the stairs etc. It is a minefield with ds!

aldiwhore · 20/09/2012 15:03

I don't like air fresheners at all, but I have one in the loo, they're considerably better/quicker than waiting for the smell of shit to disappear.

I do love candles and oil though and have been known to squirt the unholstrey with fabric conditioner.

I bought one of those glade 'every 30 minutes we'll asphixiate (sp) you' things once, DH didn't like he, he didn't say so much but I found it on the garden.

margerykemp · 20/09/2012 15:07

yanbu i hate them too

gettingeasier · 20/09/2012 15:22

Well I hate air freshners as in those nasty white plastic triangles with a rubbery inside

However I love expensive reed diffusers like those from Branche D'Olive and have them in my front room. I dont think they are bad for you are they ?

Hopandaskip · 20/09/2012 15:25

omg yes. Can we add overly perfumed washing powder too? I don't want to smell like I bathed in old lady perfume when I get dressed.

MousyMouse · 20/09/2012 15:41

I think natural oils/diffusers are ok if used sparingly.

just these artifical smells make me feel ill.
and yes to strong washing detergent smells. when I run out of my usual (ecover) powder and just buy 'something' for the interim I'm very happy for the subtle natural smell...

In general I agree, but have discovered Glade 'Clean Linen' which is bearable.

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 20/09/2012 15:58

I use reed diffusers and have air fresheners in an emergency. I also have a dog with anal gland issues. Believe me, nasty synthetic perfume is positively glorious next to the stench of anal gland secretions

HiHowAreYou · 20/09/2012 16:00

I hate them.
I have to unplug them all in my MIL and my mother's houses when I visit, or they make me feel sick and headachey.

They both tut at my being silly.

mummysmellsofsick · 20/09/2012 16:13

They are minging. I would rather smell most bodily emissions than air freshener, although in health food shops you can buy nice essential oil ones. We have one of those in the bathroom

onyx72 · 20/09/2012 16:49

I'm adding fabric conditioner to the list. I had to ask my DS's old childminder (who was great in every other respect) to stop washing his clothes because she used too much undiluted Lenor that it took several washes to get the smell out and it used to make all my laundry stink like a cheap launderette.

gettingeasier · 20/09/2012 17:16

"Someone shat a pinetree" an old bf used to say

amillionyears · 20/09/2012 17:25

I think they contribute to cancer.Have absolutely no proof.Hate fly spray and all sprays come to that for the same reason. Probably being irrational but personally not going to risk it.
