  • most of them they stink
  • are unhealthy
  • no, that is not the fresh smell of a spring meadow
  • they give me a headache
  • are a fire risk (the plug in ones)

ffs open the windows and let air in.

Hec, have you put a new lightbulb in recently?

We once had a horrific fishy smell that I could not find the source of, then I got closer to the lamp and it got stronger. I had been eating a salmon sandwich when the bulb had gone, and the scent had passed from my fingers to the bulb, and every time it was heating up when switched on, the wonderful aroma of eau-de-poisson filled the room..

McHappyPants2012 · 19/09/2012 22:03

HecateHarshPants you are going to fired with question, it's annoying me and i can't even smell it lol

DeliaRose · 19/09/2012 22:03

Oh dear, Hecate, is there something moving in the yellow wallpaper as well?

HecateHarshPants · 20/09/2012 05:48

in the time I've been smelling it, several bulbs have been put in!

Grin driving. I have a very clean home! Honest!

nooka · 20/09/2012 06:19

I loathe air fresheners, they really make me feel quite ill. My FIL has not only plug ins all over the place but potpourri liberally dosed in perfume too. When we stay there I have to check the bedroom for all the sources, remove them, open the window and shut the door for several hours if I want to have any chance of sleeping.

I really dislike most scented products and hate most perfume too (please don't spray yourself all over in office bathrooms - I can't breathe!). I like real smells, flowers, nice food/drink, fresh air, good essential oils in small doses.

snowballinashoebox · 20/09/2012 08:58

I want to ban magic trees in cars, overpowering stench which blocks your view and then, then when they run out people just add another so you get a collection of them all dangling. I work in a garage, give me oil and grease even the smell of baby sick or spilt milkshakes over pine or jelly feet.

Thumbwitch · 20/09/2012 09:02

I hate them all except the ones that are made with natural essential oils. I have a lovely one that neutralises DH's farts stench really well and leaves the room smelling of lemon oil - this is ok.

Anything else, forget it - and I'm allergic to Neutradol, it causes my throat to close up.

Kinora · 20/09/2012 09:04

Hecate might be the bulbs being a too high wattage for the fitting. Certain lights in out house smell a bit fishy when they have been on too long.

I love the smell of vanilla around the house. I have plug ins, sprays and candles.

MousyMouse · 20/09/2012 09:06

thumb maybe your dh should eat less beans? Wink

My mate uses them....I once walked in to her house and this smell hit me....it was like burning pot pourri or something...really awful and I said "God X what's that SMELL!?"

And she said "WHAT smell??" finally we worked it out and she was gobsmacked....it was awful.

She still uses them and she has babies too! Theyr'e very bad for babies

I clean the house. That makes it smell nice!

MrsHoarder · 20/09/2012 09:09

Yanbu. The things marketing companies convince us e need amazes me. Clean and open a window. Also open bathroom window for 5 mins after use.

And all country people know that what a meadow smells of the most is poo anyway.

frankie4 · 20/09/2012 09:11

When we moved into our house the whole house stank even though I cleaned it well, had carpets cleaned etc. We eventually located the smell at an old light fitting hanging from the ceiling.

Only like air freshners in the loo. I also open windows every day, in the winter just for a few hours.

expatinscotland · 20/09/2012 09:12

They are horrid! Really, really bad for you, too.

I make my own room spray with essential oils, vodka and distilled water.

Burn beeswax or soya wax candles, too.

Open the windows!

Bake a loaf of bread or set a pan of water on the cooker whilst you're making a meal with some cinammon sticks in it or a vanilla pod on a low simmer.

stinkyfluffycat · 20/09/2012 09:19

YANBU. Airs "fresheners" are my pet hate. Particularly puke - inducing Magic Trees, no quicker way to make me feel car sick.
And if your house smells, locate the source of the smell and CLEAN IT! Do no add cheap and nasty perfume into the mix instead.
And yes, open a bloody window.
Can you tell I spend a lot of time shouting at the TV whenever an air freshener advert comes on?

Thumbwitch · 20/09/2012 09:21

Mousy, he doesn't eat a lot of beans, thankfully! I'd have to leave him if he did.

Mrsjay · 20/09/2012 09:22

I was once skooshed in the eye with one of those air freshers at a friends house I was on the floor playing with the lego kids and it bloody skooshed , I hate them they stink and some are really perfumed so houses smell like perfume counters , open a window , I do have neutrodol spray in for cooking smells but hardly ever use it,

Mrsjay · 20/09/2012 09:24

vodka and distilled water.

you waste vodka by spraying it

IvanaHumpalot · 20/09/2012 09:30

Hate them hate them hate them.

DM has the motion sensor ones, can't move for getting squirted.

HecateHP can anyone else smell it? If not, go for a check up at your GP.

EasilyBored · 20/09/2012 09:38

I hate the smell of them. But I love the smell of cleaning products. I've recently started mopping my living room floor with dettol every now and again. I also love the smell of bleach, so if someone does a stinky shit in the bathroom I just squirt a bit of that down the loo and clean it. Can't stand the smell of airfreshener mixed with shit. DH uses it in the bathroom and it makes me heave. The poo doesn't even smell that bad!

Those motion sensor ones are the worst, esp when they spray onto your clothes and you stink of it for the whole day.

My mums house used to be like an obstacle course Grin now its all plug ins, I would see the point if she had the same smell but she has different freshners for different rooms 'bleurgh'

MamaGeekChic · 20/09/2012 09:46

Ah I'm not alone!! DPs mum uses them by the truckload- sprays and plug ins. I cannot stand them, they give me a headache and catch in my throat. DP thinks they are normal but I can smell if he's used one (his mum gives him them) as soon as I open the front door. I told him if he did it again he'd have to leave dramatic much I do have exceptions for one dettol one that I don't mind occassionally in the downstairs loo as it has no windows. I am also partial to a 'winter' roomspray around christmas, I love specific scented candles and sometimes put some lenor in a basin of hot water.

Sparklingbrook · 20/09/2012 09:54

I think they aren't necessary, but do have a plug in in the porch due to whiffy shoes and football boots.

The ones that make me gag are the car ones.
