To be a bit annoyed at teacher ?

DD (p3) teacher told her class to write ditto marks in her homework diary.

Monday - reading and spelling
Tuesday - " "

AIBU to think this sort of teaches laziness/taking the easy option. Or just a PFB moment ? :)

What's wrong with teaching her what 'ditto' means

Hmm
squeakytoy · 19/09/2012 13:26

PFB if your daughter understands what "" means

BlazerOfGlory · 19/09/2012 13:26

major pfb.

rubyslippers · 19/09/2012 13:26

I really think you're over thinking it TBH ...

ShobGiteTheKnid · 19/09/2012 13:27

Well personally I would have wanted my class to have something in their diaries explaining that reading and spellings were always homework, tbh.

However, if there is a space for every day to be filled, then I agree with you, far better for them to use the time to write the same thing out 5 times - after all, not as if there might be anything more productive than copying that they could be using their time in school for, is there? Like learning something, perhaps?

Oh ! Smile

Depends how much time would be wasted by either 30 6-7 year olds painstakingly writing "reading and spelling" or teacher/ta wandering around doing it themself. It may be that the teacher had some actual literacy/numeracy to teach them...

Pandemoniaa · 19/09/2012 13:39

I rather think this takes PFB to new levels.

Isn't learning to write ditto marks educational in itself though? Only it would be fearfully irresponsible to release these children onto the world in complete ignorance of the existence of the exceedingly useful " ".

Hullygully · 19/09/2012 13:40

I would be utterly FURIOUS.

This is why this country is going to the Gove.

Write to the Governors at once and the National Press.

sidress · 19/09/2012 13:41

Whats the problem? She is teaching them shorthand they may use as adults on the rare times they are prised off computer/phone/ipad/whatever they have by then.

FrustratedSycamorePants · 19/09/2012 13:44

" " to everyone who said pfb to whole new level.

cheekybarsteward · 19/09/2012 13:46

Surely this is a good tool to teach them?

HellonHeels · 19/09/2012 13:51

Are you really the teacher OP? This has got to be a reverse AIBU, surely?

FredFredGeorge · 19/09/2012 14:04

Surely it's a more complicated option for the teacher? They have a more complicated command to give, they have to explain what ditto marks are, how is it a lazy option?

Pandemoniaa · 19/09/2012 14:06

" " Fred

ramblinrose · 19/09/2012 14:11

That wouldn't concern me.

Themumsnot · 19/09/2012 14:14

So let me get this straight, OP is complaining that by teacher her child a new concept and encouraging her to apply it to her work, she is being taught to be lazy.

Teachers really can't win.

ALittleBitOfMagic · 19/09/2012 14:14

Why do 6yo need to know what ditto means ? Surely writing it out twice it better for a p3 as they still need writing practice . And fwiw she didnt explain what it meant . I had to explain it meant she has the same homework as the night before . I just thought this was yet another halfarsed moment from DDs teacher . Obviously I'm wrong and it's perfectly acceptable .

Perhaps you should pop in and suggest to the teacher that you should teach the class instead as you clearly have a better idea of what six year olds need to learn.
