Is it a silly idea to think i could get a cleaning job without having a car. im thinking maybe i could clean peoples houses in the local area. during school hours.

I wouldn't clean my neighbours' houses but you would have to remember that a cleaner takes all her own stuff with her: vacuum cleaner, broom, bucket, cloths, dusters, mop bucket and mop, cleaning liquids.

I suppose you could do it if you had a trolley or used your customers' goods.

HedgeHogGroup · 18/09/2012 20:13

My cleaner doesn't have a car. I provide the cleaning stuff.

Diana2000 · 18/09/2012 20:15

I worked as a self employed cleaner without a car for a while. All my jobs were within walking distance of my home and I used a 'granny' type shopping trolley to transport my equipment. It worked out fine :)

Beanbagz · 18/09/2012 20:16

I provide all my own (eco friendly) cleaning equipement for my cleaner so there'd be no problem if she didn't have acar.

Diana2000 · 18/09/2012 20:17

Oh, meant to say - rulebritannia lots of cleaners don't take their own vacuum cleaner to jobs. I always used the customer's.

msnaughty · 18/09/2012 20:20

diana: thats a great i idea. i dont want to do practicaully next door. but i can get all round my estate. and i dont think you have to supply big things ike hoover. if i was to put cards up would it make sence to tell people what i would do. and what about what i would not do. ie i wont do ironing or washing.

OP posts:
msnaughty · 18/09/2012 20:22

Greenparcel: i would look a right muppet walking around the estate with that Blush

Lambzig · 18/09/2012 20:25

My cleaner gets the bus. She uses all my cleaning stuff and equipment. Actually I think I would hate the idea of her using the same cloths used on someone else's bathroom or the same mop or vacuum cleaner used in someones house if they had pets for example.

GreenParcel · 18/09/2012 20:26

Awww I thought it was cute and quirky! I want one! Blush

Diana2000 · 18/09/2012 20:36

msnaughty yes, definitely a good idea to put on the cards that you don't do ironing, etc - saves wasting peoples' time if that's what they're looking for in a cleaner.

£7 an hour sounds fine. I was charging £15 for two hours and this was outside London (Devon).

Joiningthegang · 18/09/2012 20:39

Yes do it!!!
I provide all the stiff for our cleaner who walks to us and works during school hours.
£10 per hour and she does 2 hours - rural east anglia

Joiningthegang · 18/09/2012 20:39

Stuff obviously! Not stiff

mamij · 18/09/2012 20:41

Go for it! Our cleaner comes fortnightly for 2.5 hours each. She uses our cleaning products and equipment.

Silibilimili · 18/09/2012 20:44

My cleaner (living jn Surrey) charges gbp8/hr and uses the bus. I provide all my own equipment.

emsyj · 18/09/2012 20:46

My friend's cleaner doesn't drive and so only does places within walking distance unless they offer a minimum of 4 hours' work, in which case she takes the bus.

We were paying £7 an hour in SE London 5 years ago - I know London is more competitive for cleaning work than elsewhere, but I would think you could charge more than that.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 18/09/2012 20:47

I provide all the cleaning equipment and I think y ou can charge more than £7ph, too.

zgaze · 18/09/2012 20:50

I'm in SE London and pay £11.50 an hour and provide all the cleaning stuff so don't sell yourself short!

Viewofthehills · 18/09/2012 20:51

I pay £12/hr, but they bring their own stuff so I certainly think you should consider charging about £10

msnaughty · 18/09/2012 20:54

emsyj: i was just having a peek on google i saw from 11.00 to 8.50 an hour was thinking maybe i would charge 8.00/8.50

im on benefits at the moment so dont know how it will all work out. or how i build it up. i guess i will have to ask job centre what happens whilst im building things up and how it all works if im classed as self employed. and child care and that sort of thing.

zagaze: im wondering if i should charge less as im new to it. maybe 10.00 pounds is not so bad.

I live just outside SE London (Bromley) and I've had a cleaner for years. She doesn't have a car - she comes on the bus. I provide all the cleaning stuff, cloths, dusters, vacuum cleaner etc.

I pay £10/hour as I like my cleaner very much, but her hourly rate is £9.

When I was looking for a cleaner, I wanted someone who would do ironing as well. I wouldn't have a cleaner who didn't offer ironing, at my home (rather than taking it aaway to iron at her home and bring it all back), so if you are willing to iron, that may help. Good luck!

nowahousewife · 18/09/2012 21:04

Have had cleaners for the last 18 years, have always provided cleaning stuff and they've never had cars. Pay £10/hr and live in London. Have had current cleaner for over three years, she's fab and gets around on her bike.

msnaughty · 18/09/2012 21:04

happy: im in bromley. not the nice end lol. i cant iron i have never ironed in my life. Blush
