When buying three hot drinks this afternoon. She's not wrong. Grin

I went in to be intentionally ripped off as DS1 had had his brace tightened and wanted a passion fruit and mango smoothie, and I am a soft touch. Wink

But there's always a queue so I must be missing something?

For those of you who (like me) love Costa tiffin, make it at home! I use this recipe - it's awesome, and VERY moreish:

BadBuddha · 18/09/2012 19:52

Oh, and YANBU Blush

out2lunch · 18/09/2012 19:53

where are you lunch box? i cd be tempted Smile

two pound would be reasonable i think down here anyway

MarysBeard · 18/09/2012 19:55

£1.50 for a regular, £2.00 for large, lunchbox. Though most places are nearer the £2.00 mark for a regular. Near us the independents are no cheaper.

talkingnonsense · 18/09/2012 20:00

I go to the chains as they are more likely to have something gluten free. Muffin break has the best gf cake.

lunchbox · 18/09/2012 20:00

Out2lunch

Thanks for that, will consider it when pricing everything.

Am in north Somerset, pm me if you're near - trying not get into trouble for advertising on here.

Am hoping to open next month, Very excited Grin

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/09/2012 20:00

I don't go into coffee shops very often but story and go to an independent one when I do. However, this week when I did I didn't get the decaf I asked for even though it was marked on my receipt and he started making it as soon as he took my order. I know it wasn't decaf as it sent my heart rate soaring and I felt pretty poorly for a few hours. So I'm going to have to reconsider going there. Grrrr.

CombineBananaFister · 18/09/2012 20:30

I think costa is a bit overpriced, but its like anything-you get what you pay for. Arabica beans are expensive (especially if they are fairtrade and good quality), robusta beans less so but the tastes not there. its like the difference between cheap/nasty plonk and the mark-ups only extortionate on filter coffee plus there's sit-in tax on top. Now if she was whinging at Starbucks which is supposed to be a coffee shop but just serves sweet syrupy desserty shite then fair dos. I personally like M and S and Frankie and Bennies (takes barista hat off Smile)

McHappyPants2012 · 18/09/2012 20:33

A coffee expert will tell you never order a cappuccino after breakfast time as it is a breakfast coffee :)

thebeesnees79 · 18/09/2012 20:38

haha awesome! I like Starbucks better but they are both equally ott in the price

Londonista1975 · 18/09/2012 20:40

I agree Costa overprice their coffee and I steer clear of going in any of their branches, going to Starbucks instead usually. Their filter coffee is only £1.50 and if you drink in you can have a refill for free. It's not of a great standard of course but I go in for the free wifi and what also is nice are the cosy sofas and atmosphere - the byproduct I suppose. But when I'm in the mood fr treating myself I'll go independent and pay more.

DisabilEightiesChick · 18/09/2012 20:47

That's the thing though, the staff don't set the prices, so not really fair to blame them. If you find it overpriced go elsewhere. I go to my local one largely because it is conveniently near to other places I shop and because the staff are lovely and dote on my DS Smile The coffee's OK and some of the cakes are nice, but it's hardly a VFM experience - then again I know that.

TheSurgeonsMate · 18/09/2012 20:59

Perhaps she was hte lady who wrote this on the back of the bathroom door at my local Starbucks - "You'd think at 2 quid for a cup of coffee they could mend the toilet seat." It had been broken a long time.

carlywurly · 18/09/2012 21:00

Our local Starbucks sells rank filter coffee, for some reason. It used to be £1 with free syrup with a Starbucks card but they seem to have knocked that one on the head.
Costa flat white is nice, and not too much of a rip off. It says something though when we visited London recently (we live in the sticks), and found the coffee shops there cheap Grin

GoldandOrangeAnnunziata · 18/09/2012 21:03

Wellll the prices are shocking but the poor sod behind the counter doesn't set them!

KeemaNaanAndCurryOn · 18/09/2012 21:04

I like costa, but its the only chain that doesn't have free wifi, so I tend to go to one of the others. Its my treat. A large mug of coffee and a copy of Private Eye keep my occupied for a relaxing half hour or so in between having to do crappy stuff.

choceyes · 18/09/2012 21:22

I don't mind Costa. They do a nice babycino for DS and last time even gave him a chocolate flake...he was in heaven...all for 50p. It is in a Waterstons bookshop and sometimes I don't even by a drink for myself. Just give 50p to DS and he orders himself a drink. The staff are lovely and so helpful.

I much prefer independant coffee/tea houses though, because you get the milk in a little jug and they bring it all over to your table. At the chains, they just chuck in a tea bag in hot water, immediately put milk in it so that the temp goes down so the tea can't brew so you end up with a very weak tea. Or they direct you to a counter with milk on it, so either you put it there and then yourself without giving time for the tea to brew, or stand there like an idiot waiting for your tea to brew properly so you can put milk in it. They charge you £2 for this tea and you are making it yourself...the bloody cheek of it!

bamboobutton · 18/09/2012 21:32

I had a "HOW MUCH???!!!!?????" moment in a bakery/restaurant up near chelsea-on-sea. Picked up 2 gingerbread men for the dc, went to pay, expecting them to cost about 80p each and was staggered when i was asked to pay five whole English pounds!!!! 2.50 each, for gingerbread men!!

I politely told them to go swivel.

Sparklingbrook · 18/09/2012 21:33

The lady in question sort of said it to the world at large not directly at the poor overworked girl trying to make the overpriced beverages.

captainmummy · 18/09/2012 21:39

OUr local cafe charges £2.70 for a large Latte, but it does come with a free toasted teacake!

Trills · 18/09/2012 21:41

YABU - screeching is rude and does not deserve applause.

GoldandOrangeAnnunziata · 18/09/2012 21:42

Still... the poor overworked girl's day would not have been made any better by moaning about prices Surely there is a price list up anyway.

Sparklingbrook · 18/09/2012 21:43

I only thought about it Trills, I wouldn't dare do it as people might look at me. Blush

OP posts:
GoldandOrangeAnnunziata · 18/09/2012 21:43

Oh and cappuccino- about £2, latte about £2.50.

dottygirl1 · 18/09/2012 22:02

I am always "is that all" since I moved to UK. Go for a coffee in Ireland and you will know all about it..........rip off.
