To think that if the National Trust are going to charge £4.35 for a sandwich, it should at least contain naice ham

Bought a sandwich at Petworth, £4.35, for a very small ham bap. Checked the ingredients, it said 'made with formed ham'.

AIBU or is this just wrong?

("Formed ham is muscle meat from the leg bones. It is chopped and passed under needles which inject it with a solution of water, sugars, preservatives, flavourings and other additives, or put into a giant machine resembling a cement mixer and mixed with a similar solution. The process dissolves an amino acid called myosin so the meat becomes sticky and, when put into moulds, comes out looking like a whole piece of meat.")

I personally did not buy the sandwich, DP did. I however did inspect it to see how small and crappy it was.

We went to Petworth House last month. 2 x 2 scones with jam and clotted cream and coffee, 2 soups & bread and 2 x elderflower presse = £28....

My kids wonder why I always want to take a picnic....

DS wanted the Elderflower pressé. I pointed that it cost £5 and said no.

He then wanted the Ice tea, which was £2.50, I said no too, he could have a water (about £1.60) or one of those smoothy type drinks in a carton (about £1.50). He had water.

YANBU

I had to buy DS a TINY carton of Calypso (yes, Calypso, not premium brand) apple juice at Coughton Court last week. £1.15!

The rob dogs.

tbh if you are getting dissolved myosin from it, then its a direct source of protein without the body having to break it down. Surely a lot of supermarket sliced meat is like this?

I'm not keen on the National Trust for other reasons. They have "mothballed" a beautiful stately home near me gifted to them years ago in a will because they cannot afford the upkeep. If only they would sell it to developers who could turn it into flats that people could actually live in!

WokingOnSunshine · 18/09/2012 11:24

geegee most supermarket ham is made like this.

Almost ham calling themselves 'Wafer Thin' are.

E.g., Tesco Finest Wafer Thin ham is all formed 'ham'.

However the thick-sliced Finest ham is generally real ham.

I got a reply from Petworth's catering manager.

"Thank you for bringing the quality of the ham sandwich you purchased at Petworth to my attention. As you correctly state the National Trust have standards which our restaurants adhere too and Petworth has a Silver Award from the Soil Association.

We currently have staffing issues and have had to resort to purchasing sandwiches from a local supplier for the week-ends. When audited I understood that they had the same ethics as ourselves and purchased ham from the same supplier as the National Trust. Your comments will certainly be investigated.

Thank you for supporting the National Trust and its catering facilities."

Well they may have purchased ham from the same supplier but presumably the supplier stocks naice ham and also sells the hosed down from the floor remnants wot gets made into plastic ham, too?

If it makes you feel better, our most recent NT cafe visit included the purchase of Pom Bears, so all is not lost!
