To think that if the National Trust are going to charge £4.35 for a sandwich, it should at least contain naice ham

Bought a sandwich at Petworth, £4.35, for a very small ham bap. Checked the ingredients, it said 'made with formed ham'.

AIBU or is this just wrong?

("Formed ham is muscle meat from the leg bones. It is chopped and passed under needles which inject it with a solution of water, sugars, preservatives, flavourings and other additives, or put into a giant machine resembling a cement mixer and mixed with a similar solution. The process dissolves an amino acid called myosin so the meat becomes sticky and, when put into moulds, comes out looking like a whole piece of meat.")

YANBU!

BlackberryIce · 17/09/2012 19:19

Bloody hell, is that really how cheap ham is made? I had an inkling it wasn't 'right' but never really taken much notice!

DamnTheManSaveTheEmpire · 17/09/2012 19:20

I have to ask why do mners write "naice" instead of nice? Can someone pls explain it to me? And boak as well while I'm asking. I'm puzzled when I read it and saying out loud doesn't make it clearer.

WokingOnSunshine · 17/09/2012 19:22

I shall write them a letter

"As a member of the National Trust of many years standing, I applaud your commitment to quality, sustainable food.

I was therefore horrified to find upon purchasing my very expensive, and small (£4.35) ham sandwich at Petworth House in Sussex on Saturday, 15th September, that it was made from 'formed ham', a disgusting concoction made in an industrial cement mixture out of pork slurry mixed with additives.

Please could you take steps to ensure further such 'food horrors' appear in your properties in future, except perhaps in a historical context, e.g., roast swan in a Tudor property, or dried egg in a WW2 exhibition.

Thank you."

sorry, "no further such 'food horrors'"

Good letter! Grin
You'd think the NT would have naice ham.

MadgeHarvey · 17/09/2012 19:27

Good letter! I'd like to think it was impossible to buy such a vomit-worthy sounding thing anywhere never mind the NT. Revolting.

McHappyPants2012 · 17/09/2012 19:34

For £4.35 for a sandwich I would expect it to be hand made using fresh ingredients.

pigletmania · 17/09/2012 19:37

Noway would i have paid that, are you bonkers Grin. I would have evaded fr the nearest WeAtherspoons etc

thebeesnees79 · 17/09/2012 19:38

I never buy reformed meat of any kind.
I am veggie but the kids and hubby eat meat, it has to be proper sliced ham or a whole chicken etc.
Its cheap and disgusting that they charged you that price for it.

pigletmania · 17/09/2012 19:39

Meant i would have waited and headed for the nearest WeAtherspoons etc

pigletmania · 17/09/2012 19:41

You can get a buyone get one free hot diners fr that price at Henry's Table, WeAtherspoons, did you not see the sandwich before you purchased it. I resume it was in a wrapper, I wuld ave asked for a refund

TiggyD · 17/09/2012 21:02

YANBU to criticize the cost of NT food. Far too poncey as well. What's up with cheese and onion with a touch of mayo, or ham and cheese? Why crayfish tails, or truffle and panda? Why not walkers crisps instead of individually hand blown crisps flavoured with exotic vinegars and salts from far off erotic places?

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 17/09/2012 21:08

the cafe at our nearest NT place is both awful and expensive
this means we don't go there unless it's picnic weather. we'd be happy to buy lunch in the cafe if only it were edible.

wigglesrock · 17/09/2012 21:08

I visit a National Trust attraction with my dds - they took over the catering in the cafe themselves this summer - it was awful. I couldn't get a packet of crisps even fancy dan ones. "Food" was overpriced, desperate tasting and very poncey - I brought food with us ever since - couldn't even get a cup of proper tea Grin

Lilymaid · 17/09/2012 21:11

Years ago NT tea rooms did excellent food because it was all made in house but now the food seems to be expensive and poor quality.
Bring back the naice ladies (and men) who used to prepare local dishes and get rid of the standardised factory made food.

lionheart · 17/09/2012 21:54

Do they contract it out in some places?

Scholes34 · 17/09/2012 22:46

Thieving baarstaards, the National Trust. Why am I still a member? I think it's for the free parking at various locations around the country.

I pay my family membership every year by DD - the card arrives before I remember to cancel. It's a fair amount of money, but I always feel they want more out of me whenever I visit a property - only very rarely do you get any kind of free guide to the property you're visiting, so we tend to look upon them as a nice place to stop for a pic-nic and to use the loo. Must check out English Heritage, who have to provide an interesting guide, as it's usually a pile of rubble you're visiting anyway.

YABU to have bought a sandwich at that price in the first place, naice ham or not naice ham!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 17/09/2012 23:56

DamnTheMan "naice" comes from a thread we had ages ago, someone had found a shopping list in a supermarket and one of the items on the list was "naice ham". The list itself was random and funny, iirc. "Naice" just stuck and has become the way people spell nice if it's meant to mean posh-nice.

(this is my recollection, someone else might remember it better..)

FairhairedandFrustrated · 18/09/2012 00:02

Was it cod* that found the list?

And boak is baulk or bork - that noise when your stomach twists up and your throat "does the borky thing" just before you throw up. Means something makes you feel sick.

OTheHugeManatee · 18/09/2012 08:11

Massive arf a 'far off erotic places'. Grin

wigglesrock · 18/09/2012 09:09

Where I am boke is to vomit as in "I boked my ring" Grin

Mrsjay · 18/09/2012 09:48

nearly a fiver for any sandwhich is not on what were you thinking Shock

IvanaHumpalot · 18/09/2012 10:20

Let's start a campaign.

I want...

Home made doorstop sandwiches with proper fillings.
Crispy jacket spuds and rib sticking stews in winter.
Oozy cream cakes.
Pots of tea/real coffee.

Don't serve me, plastic food served in shrink wrapped plastic. If I want that I'll go to a service station.
