My daughter is nearly 6 and has recently 'discovered' the Disney Channel with all those (to me anyway) horrible sitcoms (I dont know what else to call them) such as "Jessie", "Good Luck Charlie", "Ant Farm", "Wizards Of Waverley Place" etc. I think some of them are a bit too old for her (the first 2 I mentioned seem OK though) - High school stuff with love interest themes and bullying etc. To be honest I cant bear to sit and watch them for long - do you think its OK for a 5/6 yr old to watch these? Horrifyingly I noticed my DD started talking with that awful inflection at the end of sentences (making them all sound like a question) which I am assuming she is getting from these - she also said "IN YOUR FACE"! which I have heard them saying in these progs. Or am I over-reacting and well, being a bit snobbish? PS: I have comes to terms its not going to be all-day Blue Peter and Newsround for her

Your DD, your choice.

But the inflection thing is pretty common amongst children, as is saying things like "In your face". She'll learn these things from other kids and if you don't like it, just keep telling her to pack it in.

I think being 'horrified' is a step too far though.

You're probably better saving your horror for something that's actually horrific like running out of wine on a saturday night

Sparklingbrook · 17/09/2012 17:49

Ooh the new series of Good Luck Charlie is starting soon and Amy Duncan is having another baby. Grin

Bu that aside my 10 and 13 year old watch them, They don't contain anything offensive or awful. BUT they are sooo annoying, and they wind me up.

pollmeister · 17/09/2012 17:51

Basically, I want someone else to watch them and tell me they are OK so I dont have to!
I draw the line at flippin' Hannah Montana though.

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 17/09/2012 17:53

Actually Hannah Montana is not as bad as some of the Disney shite

My DD watches some of them and I try to tune out if they are on. There isnt anything particularly bad about any of the ones you mentioned - apart from the fact they are annoying and after a while I turn it off.

Sparklingbrook · 17/09/2012 17:56

There is one called Suite Life on Deck. There are twins on a Cruise Ship. I would imagine a 6 year old girl would love it. Again, nothing bad, no effing and jeffing obviously.

It drove me mad though.

nokidshere · 17/09/2012 17:58

I banned Suite life - hate it! But the children like Jessie and thats palatable!

marjproops · 17/09/2012 18:11

prefer Americanisms to the 'innit, yeh i fink im bonkers' stuff! Id go with suite life too, dc loves it, and Disney junior has a mix of babyish plus more suited to a 6yo like art attack, Handy Manny (or Andy Murray as dc sings!) and imagination movers. pair of kings on disney xds not too bad, and fort boyard.I likes hannah montana! well, i liked Billy Ray Cyrus anyway!dc likes Rico and Jackson. depends if you'd rather hear your child with americanisms or englishness. shes going to hear them at school anyway. remember when high school musical was all the rage. it was all the songs sung and played all the flippin' time!

Sparklingbrook · 17/09/2012 18:13

Phineas and Ferb is brilliant if she comes across that.

marjproops · 17/09/2012 18:32

oh yeh forgot Phineas and Ferb! I put dx on just to see that for ME!

getrealandgetalife · 17/09/2012 18:36

my dd is 8 and has just discovered them, and i think that they are too old for her!

its the blummin theme tunes that do ME in.... so repetative and predictable but the kids love it!

pollmeister · 17/09/2012 18:44

Thing is, its like I have an irrational loathing of US sitcoms in general. EG: I HATE "Friends" with every fibre of my being.

(I liked Sex In The City though).

Sparklingbrook · 17/09/2012 18:45

Big Bang Theory is brilliant poll. Friends got on my nerves.

pollmeister · 17/09/2012 18:47

forces DD to watch all 4 seasons of Breaking Bad

expatinscotland · 17/09/2012 18:49

How about turning off your telly? She's 6. You're an adult.

getrealandgetalife · 17/09/2012 18:54

expat... you kind of miss the point.

do your kids NEVER watch telly?

expatinscotland · 17/09/2012 18:57

Yes, they watch telly. MY telly. I control what they watch right now because they are 6 and 3. If I didn't want them to watch Disney Channel, which we don't have because we don't have Sky, then they wouldn't watch it.

The point is very simple, actually, if you don't want children that young to watch particular programmes, then they don't because, well, you're the adult in the home.

FiveHoursSleep · 17/09/2012 18:59

We've banned them in my house.
My DDs are 6, 9 and 10 but the 9 year old is very influenced by these kinds of shows and started echoing the phrases.
There has been a marked reduction in mouthing off and cheek since I banned them.

CaseyShraeger · 17/09/2012 19:00

My DCs don't know of the existence of the Disney Channel. Not sure how long I can keep that up, though. I wouldn't have let a 5yo watch the shows you mention (but Phineas and Ferb is fine; I approve of Phineas and Ferb).

expat, by the sound of things OP is perfectly capable of turning off the telly; she's just wondering (and canvassing opinion on) whether she should or if she's just overreacting.

expatinscotland · 17/09/2012 19:01

And I've answered accordingly. She doesn't like what she's watching, so turn it off.

runningforme · 17/09/2012 19:06

My de is almost 8 and I don't allow her to watch these type of shows. They're all about popularity and boys etc and I feel it's too much too soon.

tkband3 · 17/09/2012 19:07

Disney channel is banned in our house, except when one of my DDs is unwell and off school or for a special treat. I got fed up with them copying the attitude, especially DD1 (9) - I realise this is pretty much endemic these days amongst girls of this age, but things definitely improved when access to these programmes was limited.

There are programmes on CBBC that can be equally as mind-numbing, but at least they are interspersed with things like Horrible Histories!

FiveHoursSleep · 17/09/2012 19:08

Running, thats exactly what worried me too.
They send out such awful messages to young girls :(
They say all their friends watch them and this is probably true...

PoppyWearer · 17/09/2012 19:12

This fills me with fear. My 4yo DD recently defected from CBeebies to Disney Junior and it's awful. We saw some of the Disney Channel proper at Disneyland Paris in the summer and I could feel my IQ falling the longer it was on.

CaseyShraeger · 17/09/2012 19:13

But she's wondering whether she's being irrational in disliking the programmes (I'm not wild about watching nature documentaries where lizards etc. eat insects and have legs sticking out of the sides of their mouths but I wouldn't stop the DCs watching them because I know that's my own irrational issue, for example).

Even the question in the thread title is "AIBU to stop my DD watching...?" so it's not as though turning off the telly isn't the option she's already considering and, indeed, leaning towards.

Chubfuddler · 17/09/2012 19:15

Ghastly shows teaching girls to be obsessed with clothes, boys and popularity. Yuk.
