Aldi/Lidl Bores

I just can't cope any more with my delightful PILs and their Aldi-Love. Eevery time I see them, they tell me what they've bought recently, how much it cost, when they went...which then spirals into a monologue about every blessed thing they have ever purchased there. It's getting to the point where I don't even want to say Thanks if they have made me a coffee, or offered me a biscuit...and as for Sunday Lunch? Never again.

Disclaimer No1:- LIGHT-HEARTED thread

Disclaimer No2:- In NO WAY sneering at people who are skint and have to shop in such places (did it myself for a couple of years when I wasn't working); nor those who choose to. Just those who go on and on endlessly about their latest bargains.

Just had to laugh as this thread came up directly below the other thread about Aldi/Lidl being not much cheaper than Tesco etc. in my Active Convos!

I've been in the Aldi here in Australia but I was slightly freaked out by not being able to recognise a single brand - so didn't buy anything and haven't been back. Blush

ilovemyteddies · 16/09/2012 12:58

Lovely, I've been waiting for a thread so I can tell everyone about the 79p coffee I got for Aldi. Did I mention it tastes just as good as Nescafe? No, better.

And the Aldi muesli with the funny German name.

Oh, the muesli.

It has improved the quality of my life by 10056%.

It even gets rid of that dodgy constipation problem I was having. You know the one? Oh, you didn't? Shall I tell you about it?

YOU SHOULD ALL GO TO ALDI, YOU TESCO/WAITROSE/ASDA GOING CHUMPS.

AThingInYourLife · 16/09/2012 13:00

Yes, those shops do seem to inspire a strange need to talk about shopping.

AndiMac · 16/09/2012 13:07

They might just be old people who like talking about how they got a deal, and Aldi and Lidl are places where they can regularly find them. Others do this, but with clothing from charity shops.

NumericalMum · 16/09/2012 13:14

I went to aldi the other day. We bought wine which was cheap and not bad but I don't think I would go back for anything else. Shop scared me!

sassytheFIRST · 16/09/2012 13:16

AThingInYourLife - that's it. Nail. Smack on the head.

AndiMac - they're not old - both mid-sixties. Nor are they skint - two holidays booked this month, one in Cornwall, one in Italy.

They're just DULL.

YANBU- but I have to admit I'man aldi bore and I start talking about it without realising and then I can't stop.

happybubblebrain · 16/09/2012 13:27

YABU
A thread all about people who talk about Aldis is more boring than a thread about Aldis.

worldcitizen · 16/09/2012 13:30

Not skint
Am a self-confessed food snob
Totally into reading consumer protection reviews
Keep up with which 'expensive brands' produce or sell to Aldi/Lidl and get sold as products with different name.
Compare and try various shops/brands and end up buying which has the best quality and taste in my view and on top of that even end up buying in above shops at much lower price

Oh, and because I grew up with parents who weren't skint and appreciated great quality food themselves I am neither ashamed to shop in a discounter supermarket nor am I in need to "big myself up" with help of certain brands...

So, how was that for light-hearted Grin

Viviennemary · 16/09/2012 13:32

I quite like supermaket threads. What does that say about me!! We went to Waitrose for a few bits yesterday and bought those biscuits. £1.67 as a treat. Ten teeny tiny little biscuits. Faints!

nkf · 16/09/2012 13:35

I know what you mean. Costco bores exist too. And those interminable threads where people say what their kids had in their packed lunchs. I use them instead of Nytol.

Bandwagonesqe · 16/09/2012 13:35

In NO WAY sneering at people who are skint and have to shop in such places

I find this comment totally offensive by the way.

worldcitizen · 16/09/2012 13:40

When I am in the UK I keep annoying people with my love for the M&S food department!!!!!!

I cannot get over how awesome that place is. So, I might be to others a nuisance as well?! Grin Grin Grin

Maat · 16/09/2012 13:41

Do we share the same PIL's? Mine are like this too. Since they retired it has become a full time hobby going around all the supermarkets comparing prices and ringing us up in the evening to tell us (for example) where we can get mussels in white wine for a £1.

Add to this my FIL's obsession with finding the ultimate sausage - and it's all becoming quite boring.

aJumpedUpPantryBoy · 16/09/2012 13:42

Well, I'm not quite skint yet and I still sometimes choose to shop in Aldi/Lidl.

Whilst I understand what you mean about the supermarket bores I think you are making a bit of a sweeping generalisation about finances and shopping choices

TheMonster · 16/09/2012 13:43

Im off to Sainsbury's later.

Maat · 16/09/2012 13:45

Forgot to say ....PILs are in no way skint - far from it - but they love a bargain.

AndiMac · 16/09/2012 13:45

They're just DULL.

Haha! Well my own mother does this, but I wouldn't call her dull. She's in her late 60s, not skint either, but obsessed with a deal. Walking into her pantry is like walking into someone preparing for nuclear winter, as she'll buy a whole load when something is on special. It is dull when she goes on about it, to be fair, and being your in-laws can't help (says the woman in the midst of another 5 week visit from FIL).

topbannana · 16/09/2012 13:45

Good God, I have recently taken to whizzing through Lidl for fruit and veg (inspired by MN's Lidl Love)
Last time I bought some olives bitter, vile little fuckers for DH and they were, get ready for this, £1.69 for a nearly 1kg jar. They are apparently very nice too
The worst is I have already told two people about my fantastic bargain olives- shoot me now :o
