Aldi/Lidl Bores

I just can't cope any more with my delightful PILs and their Aldi-Love. Eevery time I see them, they tell me what they've bought recently, how much it cost, when they went...which then spirals into a monologue about every blessed thing they have ever purchased there. It's getting to the point where I don't even want to say Thanks if they have made me a coffee, or offered me a biscuit...and as for Sunday Lunch? Never again.

Disclaimer No1:- LIGHT-HEARTED thread

Disclaimer No2:- In NO WAY sneering at people who are skint and have to shop in such places (did it myself for a couple of years when I wasn't working); nor those who choose to. Just those who go on and on endlessly about their latest bargains.

topbannana, you are on the slippery slop to supermarket-borer Grin

I too, may have mentioned the lovely Aldi Frickadellen to a friend

TheSitChewAceChien · 16/09/2012 13:52

OP did say 'nor those who choose to'

I'm sometimes guilty of supermarket price waffling. So YABU Wink
I tend to just tell DD though, she will just sit and nod her head, while ignoring me. Or bbm her friend.

I got one of those Breville One Cup hot water things from Tesco the other week, reduced from £50 to £12.
I told her about that a few times, along with showing her the calatougues with full price in.
She did mention that she wasn't that interested. Blush

And now I've told you all on this thread Grin

TheSitChewAceChien · 16/09/2012 13:54

*catalogue.

Spent my saved £s on extra letters.

diddl · 16/09/2012 13:55

I´d assume they have nothing else to talk about tbh.

Wouldn´t they be the same about any shop?

Oh & we´re not skint- & shop in such places-to stay not skint.

Can´t abide paying more for something than I have to.

Hopeforever · 16/09/2012 13:59

Anyone mentioned the wonderful ownbrand chocolate chunk biscuits yet?

Blush sorry wrong thread Grin

worldcitizen · 16/09/2012 14:04

TheSitChewAceChien · 16/09/2012 14:07

Grin

D0oinMeCleanin · 16/09/2012 14:09

I've just got back from Aldi.

I got two fresh salmon fillets for £2.99. Bargain or what? couldn't resist

Although apart from the salmon it was much of muchness price wise compared to the local butchers and green grocers. I'm not what the fuss is about?

parakeet · 16/09/2012 17:06

My PILs do this regarding Costco.

On our last visit they brandished some underpants in my face - four for 50p or some such.

Leena49 · 16/09/2012 17:13

Lady at work does it. She hasnt got much else going on bless her. It's her only excitement that she got a bargain basket that turns into a stool!

LexieSinclair · 16/09/2012 19:03

Oh dear. I do this all the time. Blush

sassytheFIRST · 16/09/2012 19:03

Hilariously - and totally unprompted - dd2 spoke up over our roast dinner tonight (thankfully no PILs in attendance).

"let's talk about what Nanny and Grandad talk about over dinner. Aldi!"

YABU.

I don't shop there myself, however the quality of ALDI and Lidl products is great. YES, it does not look great in the shop and I wouldn't call it a pleasant shopping experience but the food is good. They did a documentary on a German channel a few years back and ALDI and LIDL products come from the same 'people' as the 'expensive' products come from. They don't spend money on advertising and fancy packaging hence the low prices.

Everything else is pure snobbery.

Allofaflumble · 16/09/2012 19:12

Having smallish feet, I picked up 25 pairs of white sports socks (girls/boys) size 4 - 5.5 for £3.45. That works out at 13.8 pence a pair! Boring enough for you? :) I reckon they should last me about 5 years!!

aquashiv · 16/09/2012 19:13

I bought some childrens crocs in there and they were shite.
Everything else is marvellous if you can cope with the speed at which they throw the things at you that is.

Aah - I sympathise.
My MIL drones on about how marvellous her local bus service is. My brain just shuts down at the first mention of it.

strawberrie · 16/09/2012 19:44

My MIL also does a good line in supermarket deals and prices, but more recently has taken up those discount coupons they print out for you at the till as a specialist subject.

We were out for a meal with them about a month ago and the conversation actually reached the point of her and FIL arguing quite heatedly about whether the one they got in Morrisons was £5 off £25 or £5 off £20, leading to FIL rummaging into his wallet to prove he was right, while I quietly wept into my dinner.

Bingdweller · 16/09/2012 20:12

Mmmmmm. Lidl own brand choc chip cookies. and they're only 79p a packet Bargain.

Noqontrol · 16/09/2012 20:21

I love Aldi. Its so cheap. Having only recently discovered it, I am annoyed at myself for wasting so much money in Tescos over the years.

I am an Aldi bore and proud of it Grin Did I tell you about the tin of kidney beans I got for 20p? 20p!!!! Its unbelievable. Aldi has cut my shopping bill done to a third of what it was! Wink

Yama · 16/09/2012 20:32

Your op did make me Grin.

I am the family Aldi bore. I just love passing round a plate of something and then when someone says "these are nice" I nod away as if expecting the compliment saying "79p for 5 in Aldi". I'm sure my sister and her bf do impressions of me behind my back. Love it.

Celticlassie · 16/09/2012 20:37

It's like Witherspoons. I was in a Witherspoons with some friends recently and every time someone came back from the bar they had to say, for example, "2 pints, a vodka and coke, a red wine and two cheeseburgers. Guess how much."

It never gets old though.

hawaiiWave · 16/09/2012 22:12

Haha I get this from elderly relatives all the time too. They constantly brag about their aldi bargains and quiz me on when I'll start shopping there. I tell them 'no, I shop at Sainsbury as I like it there, they do ALL the items I need and not just a few, I don't have the time or inclination to shop at aldi and then Sainsbury for the rest'.

Next week, they tell me all about the next set of bargains! I do find time to go to m&s for some of their nice food though ;)

Happybunny12 · 16/09/2012 22:26

Am in danger of becoming a 'my supermarket.com' bore. Recently discovered online grocery shopping/deliveries and LOVE it. Saves me money too as I think twice about the impulse buys, meal plan and only buy what i need. New baby= no time for actual real supermarkets.

Dereksmalls · 16/09/2012 22:38

Waitrose sent me a card giving me 10% off all my shopping there for the whole month (am I the only one?). This month I have canned Aldi as if I shop (very) carefully, Waitrose pisses all over Aldi...
