How slow is too slow?

Today we (DH, DS and me) went to a restaurant on the seafront. It's a fairly relaxed place but not cheap. We ordered drinks and some oysters (raw ones not cooked in some crazy style). The drinks I took back to our table after I ordered.

Cue 40 minutes later - no oysters. I ask whether they are coming and the lady says that they'll be out in 2 minutes.

Cue 50 minutes from ordering - a bad tempered DS wanting a nap (he is one) and no oysters. We got a refund and left.

So AIBU? How slow is just too slow for a restaurant? They had customers but were not heaving.

that certainly was _ ho long does it take to stick some oysters on a plate??

LoopyLoopsOlympicHoops · 15/09/2012 16:01

That is too slow IMO. Main meals without starters - 30 mins is OK, 40 pushing it.

chandellina · 15/09/2012 16:01

Cold food should arrive with 10 minutes, cooked within 15, anything else is slow.

nameuschangeus · 15/09/2012 16:01

That is definitely too slow for what is essentially a non-prepared meal Grin
They should have given you your drinks money back too.

chandellina · 15/09/2012 16:02

For starters.

TapirBackRider · 15/09/2012 16:02

That's too slow, heaving or not. You waited a lot longer that I would have

YANBU

CakeBump · 15/09/2012 16:02

That would be too slow imo.

DH and I have a restaurant, and I would regard anything over half an hour as being too slow.

The wait can be mitigated with bread/drinks/amuse bouche etc...

CruCru · 15/09/2012 16:03

Oh good. I didn't much want to be the people flouncing out without good reason as I hate to see that.

I love oysters. Yum.
I wouldn't have left without getting them. I'd expect a discount.

Oysters oysters. Glorious oysters.

Yanbu. Nearly an hour is ridiculous. What was the excuse?

LRDtheFeministDragon · 15/09/2012 16:20

Far too slow, IMO, it's not as if you have to do much to oysters.

That said, I wouldn't fancy cooked shellfish that came in 15 mins as I would suspect it had been hanging around and it's a food poisoning risk, I think.

slowestwildebeast · 15/09/2012 16:32

They were raw. The should be opened and consumed within 15 mins.
If they'd opened and left them for 50 mins you'd be in for a surprise

LRDtheFeministDragon · 15/09/2012 16:35

slow, sorry, that was to chandellina who said she'd expect cooked food in 15. I agree about raw oysters.

CruCru · 15/09/2012 16:36

Mmm I'm really in the mood for oysters now. The best oysters are rock oysters [derails own thread].

slowestwildebeast · 15/09/2012 16:47

I can't wait to move to oz and eat oysters all day.

CruCru · 15/09/2012 17:52

Do you have them on their own or with Tabasco?

OP posts:
slowestwildebeast · 15/09/2012 18:04

Oh god.
I like a sqeezy of lemon. Drop of tabasco. Maybe a few chopped onion bits.

I'm drooling. Where can I get some cheap? I had some in Edinburgh which were good and cheap at about 12 for £12.

I need oysters

CruCru · 15/09/2012 18:07

Well we are in the Isle of Wight. If you are in London you could try Hix or the oyster and porterhouse in Borough market. They won't be that cheap though.

I would have let the child have his nap, was he not in a buggy?

CruCru · 15/09/2012 18:22

Yes but it has to be moving or he won't sleep. Rocking it in one place does not work.

OP posts:
slowestwildebeast · 15/09/2012 18:28

What's the child napping got to do with the speed of oysters?

I'm up north so it would be very expensive :)

detectivebeaver · 15/09/2012 18:31

I once waited 2 hours in a Caribbean restaurant (in this country). We were so drunk by the time the food came i can hardly remember what it tasted like!!

Alliwantisaroomsomewhere · 15/09/2012 18:31

I hate oysters.

YWNBU to leave the restaurant, in a huff or not.

cheesesarnie · 15/09/2012 18:34

I'm veggie and have never tried oysters but this thread is making them sound yummy!

not unreasonable!

places round here put up signs in busier times (blardy holiday makers) warning if the waiting time is over 20 minutes.

imnotmymum · 15/09/2012 18:37

I have never had oysters. Yanbu very slow service i would have flounced before that

slowestwildebeast · 15/09/2012 18:43

Oysters are too lovely to casually flounce. Serious thought must go into it.
