Just wondering who cleans up the blind dogs poo

A man has picked up his children with his blind dog in tow and on way back watched the dog squat straight in front of me in the middle of the path. I called after him pointing out that there are many children using the path and does he have a bag for me to pick it up. He said he does not carry one as he does not have to or is able to pick it up.

I was a bit shocked but probably BU.

He doesn't have to but they are usually trained to go on command at a convenient time eg. At home.

I too would have picked it up for him - nice of you to offer Smile

MooMa42o · 14/09/2012 15:27

As far as i am aware guide dogs are trained to only do their business inside/at the owners home, as you cannot expect them to be cleaned up after....

WhatYouLookingAt · 14/09/2012 15:27

Another one of these? Hmm

Guide dogs rarely poo in the street, they are specifically trained not to. It's not a big issue.

WorraLiberty · 14/09/2012 15:27

If the dog is blind, someone should really be clearing up after it.

MooMa42o · 14/09/2012 15:28

good job offering to clean it up though... :)

Minty82 · 14/09/2012 15:28

That's the first thing the dogs are trained not to do! Either it's really not a very good guide dog, or maybe it was ill?!

AlbertoFrog · 14/09/2012 15:30

Worra ... Grin

grimbletart · 14/09/2012 15:30

I used to work with a colleague who was blind. His guide dog only did a street poo if it was desperate. He used to pick it up (don't ask me how - maybe he followed the smell....)

WorraLiberty · 14/09/2012 15:31

Well calling them blind dogs is a pet hate of mine Blush

caramelsmadfuzzytail · 14/09/2012 15:32

I picked up after a guide dog once, the lady didn't know it was doing it, she was too busy pushing a buggy towing the dog while he was trying to go.

redpanda13 · 14/09/2012 15:35

My mum's neighbour has a guide dog. It will only poo in the street if it is off duty. Her brother comes and takes it out for a break. Her other retired guide dog will poo anywhere and she does pick it up.

checkin · 14/09/2012 15:38

I thought they were normslly trained too. He was a fairly young dog. Still had that puppy look might explain it.

ClippedPhoenix · 14/09/2012 15:41

So he knew the dog had done a poo and chose to ignore it being pointed out kindly to him and did nothing about it, just walked off and left it there for other children to step in? what an arse.

WhatYouLookingAt · 14/09/2012 15:45

yeah, what an arse, the blind guy didn't scrabble around on the floor looking for dog shit with his bare hands.

Hmm
ClippedPhoenix · 14/09/2012 15:47

Umm, the OP offered to pick it up.

How old were his kids OP?

AlbertoFrog · 14/09/2012 15:51

Agreed Worra. You did make me smile though.

Seriously though. Shouldn't people with guide dogs carry bags just in case this happens? They obviously can't pick up the mess but could ask a kind passer by for assistance.

redpanda13 · 14/09/2012 15:52

Are you sure it was a guide dog if still had the puppy look? The formal training takes 24 months. Not sure but I think that is after it comes back from the puppy walker?

2girls2dogs · 14/09/2012 15:54

YABU and quite horrible, and what do you mean he watched? He's fucking blind!

And why should he have to humiliate himself and ask - you know, if i had been the OP, if i had had a bag i might have discretely picked up the poo and not said anything. That would have been the kind thing to do

Glitterknickaz · 14/09/2012 15:56

Oh God not again, third time in a month now isn't it that this thread has come up?

ClippedPhoenix · 14/09/2012 15:57

Note to OP - don't miss spelling things etc. even though it's blatantly obvious what has happened. And don't post anything in AIBU especially on a gin dayFRIDAY Grin

AlbertoFrog · 14/09/2012 15:58

I carry nappy bags and would also have discretely picked up the poo but not everyone has small children and/or dogs.

One of my neighbours trains puppies to be guide dogs and they are taught not to poo in public but accidents happen and it wouldn't be a bad thing to be prepared surely?

SchrodingersMew · 14/09/2012 15:59

I don't think OP is being horrible, would it really be that humilating to ask someone to pick it up if it was an emergency, could he not have asked one of his kids to pick it up? And I'm sure she means that she watched it not him.

KatieScarlett2833 · 14/09/2012 15:59

The name is "Guide Dog" OP, the dog is not blind.

It's the Guide Dog Owners who are blind, hence the difficulty in seeing the fecking poo to pick it up.

And yes, Guide Dogs only poo in the street when desperate, they are trained to do it elsewhere (usually a dog run) so the GDO (or Mum and SFather to me) can phone me up and get me to come up and dispose once a week.
