To feed my DD peanut butter

My OH is a health freak, hardly eats sugar, fats etc. I am considerably more laid back. I have just had a lecture from him about how peanut butter in the devil's food - and pretty much responsible for Americas weight problems. I thought nuts were good for us and some fats plus it's just lush. DD loves it too and has it on toast for breakfast.

You guys know everything - does the peanut butter stay or go?

Anything in moderation so let her have it on her toast - as long as she isnt getting through loads and loads of it she will be fine.

GobblersKnob · 14/09/2012 13:27

Stay, though best to buy one without added sugar, the Whole Earth one is really nice. Peanut butter (when not full of sugar) is very nutritious and good kid fuel.

MrsRajeshKoothrappali · 14/09/2012 13:27

I give my child peanut butter.

He seems fine!!

valiumredhead · 14/09/2012 13:28

Peanut butter is NOT responsible for America's weight problem!

RuleBritannia · 14/09/2012 13:29

Mine liked peanut butter but we had it in the house only because my X had to have a daily fix.

I hated it but I can eat peanuts if they are mixed with raisins. Oh, and they are good at controlling cholesterol.

EldritchCleavage · 14/09/2012 13:29

Stays (but Wholefoods or other non-sweetened, not the Sun-Pat yuk) .

I agree sugar is not good for us, but the evidence on the harmfulness of dietary fats (other than trans fats, which do seem clearly to be problematic) is mixed. The school of thought that says carbohydrates are harmful and fats not so much is growing in influence.

Read the John Briffa webchat on here, or Gary Taubes for pointers on why fat may not be the great bogeyman it's been made out to be. And anyway, smaller children do need dietary fat more than adults, as I understand it.

laurenamium · 14/09/2012 13:29

I second whole earth peanut butter! And I know lots of fitness fanatics that swear by peanut butter to make sure they are getting enough protein and fats whilst "eating clean"

FunnysInLaJardin · 14/09/2012 13:29

stay. It's a very good source of protein and children should be eating healthy fats

NotInMyDay · 14/09/2012 13:30

Peanut butter is a wonderful food. Sweet and gooey but choc full of goodness.

Proclaiming anything a the 'devil's food' is a dangerous message. No food is bad or good. Different things should be offered in different quantities that's all.

Aboutlastnight · 14/09/2012 13:30

My DDs a like peAnut butter toast in the morning - it is a healthy rose of fat and protein in the morning. They are all 50thcentile for weight.

brighthair · 14/09/2012 13:30

Sugar is more the devils work than fat. As above the whole earth one is nice. Children need fat in their diet

Inertia · 14/09/2012 13:30

YABU. Peanut butter is not just the devil's food, it is the devil's sticky peanutty vomit - bleurgh. Horrible disgusting foul stuff.

However, if she actually likes it then I'd let her eat it. It's a protein source and small children do need some fat in their diet anyway. As with most food, a bit in moderation won't hurt.

Thumbwitch · 14/09/2012 13:31

I loathe peanut butter entirely but even so I wouldn't blame America's weight problem on it! Tell him to check into HFCS (high fructose corn syrup) if he wants to blame a single "foodstuff" - it isn't just that either but I'd go with that over peanut butter!

Peanut butter is a good source of protein and unsaturated fats; as Gobblers says, so long as it has no added sugar it should be fine. Obviously in moderation.

CleoSmackYa · 14/09/2012 13:31

I say yes. I pretty much give my child anything she asks for food-wise though.

musicposy · 14/09/2012 13:32

We can't have it in the house as DD1 is very, very allergic. But if we go elsewhere without DD1, then DD2 always has it. I like her to have it; it's packed with protein and a healthy fat. Much better than lots of other things she could be eating. It should stay. I went through my teens on a diet of peanut butter and I didn't get fat.

Treadmillmom · 14/09/2012 13:35

I buy Whole Earth peanut or just as good and cheaper Tesco Wholenut peanut butter (green lid), both options contain only 2 ingredients peanuts and palm oil. My son has peanut butter sandwiches everyday and I put a tbls worth into banana and pineapple homemade shakes for a malty flavour. Peanuts are good for you. Too much sugar is not. Tell your HV to do her homework.

thebeesnees79 · 14/09/2012 13:35

I get my kids the whole food one without sugar. Peanut butter actually has a heap of health benefits including immunity boosting!
If you look on the health authority website for pack lunch ideas it recommends peanut butter as a healthy sandwich filler. so tell your hubby that lol.
Like everyone else says in moderation its fine

MardyArsedMidlander · 14/09/2012 13:38

Peanut Butter Chunky KitKat- MMMMMMMMMMMMM. And part of every healthy diet Wink

PooPooOnMars · 14/09/2012 13:38

His isn't going to be a healthy attitude to have around the children as they grow up. Perhaps have a word with him about that. Although doesn't sound like he'd listen.

littlebluechair · 14/09/2012 13:41

If you get the peanut butter that doesn't contain added sugar it is a great food for kids - they need a lot more fat than adults and the protein is good.

Go to a health food shop and buy 'brazil nut butter' or 'cashew nut butter' instead, tell him it is vital she gets her essential fatty acids Smile

bulletwithbutterflywings · 14/09/2012 13:42

Nut butters are very good for you, as long as they aren't full of sugar, salt and oils. They are a wonderful source of fats and protein for children.

littlebluechair · 14/09/2012 13:44

Meridean peanut butter is 100% peanuts.

I found this quote from some health website, print it out and hand it to him: The nuts are enriched with many noteworthy health-benefiting nutrients that are essential for optimum health. They are actually legumes but have almost all the qualities that true nuts like almonds have.

littlebluechair · 14/09/2012 13:46

A whole list here:

peanuts are good for you

BitOutOfPractice · 14/09/2012 13:48

My running magazine recommends peanut butter and banana on whole meal bread as an excellent pre-run snack because it releases its energy slowly and is good for you

queenofthepirates · 14/09/2012 13:49

If you have a blender, you can make your own. Just roast some nuts gently then blend them with lots of oil and perhaps some sesame seeds. Keeps in the fridge forever. It won't taste exactly the same as the stuff from a jar but it's pretty darn tasty all the same.
