To feed my DD peanut butter

My OH is a health freak, hardly eats sugar, fats etc. I am considerably more laid back. I have just had a lecture from him about how peanut butter in the devil's food - and pretty much responsible for Americas weight problems. I thought nuts were good for us and some fats plus it's just lush. DD loves it too and has it on toast for breakfast.

You guys know everything - does the peanut butter stay or go?

I'm off to have a peanut butter cracker now Smile

dolallylass · 14/09/2012 13:51

Thank you. Generally he's weird with food but never would have said that in front of DCs. Peanut butter stays - I'm happy.Grin

I give my 19 month old peanut butter, she loves it, just a bit on some bagel. For a while it was the food she would deign to eat.

Reading this is so funny for me as me and my dh have had that same conversation. He hates the stuff,,. Says its bad for them. My dcs are 2 and 4. I say everything in moderation. I also agree that is a good fat to eat and actually a good nutritious way to add protein into their diet.
My dd currently adores it on her toast in the mornings, but not every day. I say eat that dhs!

your baby/toddler needs are different from a health freak concious person . peanut better is not the devil it is very healthy , the huge portions of food is resposnible for obesity not peanut butter,

PooPooOnMars · 14/09/2012 14:03

Ooh cashew nut butter!

DaveMccave · 14/09/2012 14:04

There are some that are full of refined sugars and extra oils. There are plenty of whole nut butters with no added sugar, or a small amount of unrefined sugar or honey. It is very good for you if not full of crap. Whole earth is good, try holland and barrats or any other health food shop for healthy nut butters. I'm sure your OH knows that children need a much higher amount of fat than us?

Feminine · 14/09/2012 14:05

HFCS is responsible for America's obesity problems.

Many of the cheaper brands contain it. Its very good for you in its purest form though, just peanuts basically :)

TudorJess · 14/09/2012 14:10

YANBU

bigsnugglebunny · 14/09/2012 14:13

whispers I had to google HFCS...

But pretty much what everyone else says, all things in moderation. Cashew nut butter is gorgeous!

holyfishnets · 14/09/2012 14:34

Why not go for a healthier almond or cashew nut butter from a health food shop or a peanut butter that just contains peanuts and nothing else - even sugar. There are good and bad fats though - fats from avercardo/nuts are good. Fats from mars bars/fast food burgers etc are not. Sugar is really bad though too but the related health issues have been played down

clippityclop · 14/09/2012 14:37

Stay! But get the wholefood stuff without sugar.

Butkin · 14/09/2012 15:07

I love Peanut Butter and consider it to be a nutricious thing for DD to eat. OP's OH is obviously referring to Reese's Peanut Butter Cups which are the work of the devil!

AdoraBell · 14/09/2012 15:16

Has anyone tried almond butter? Delish.

OP

A varied diet, including moderate amounts of the right kind of fats and small amount of sugar, is what everyone needs unless they have some kind of medical issue that dictates a restricted diet.

By the sounds of it your DD is being far more sensible than DH. But he's a grown-up and as such can make his own decisions about his own diet. Luckily DD has to rely on you. And no, peanut butter alone is not responsible for obesity - in any country.

Dawndonna · 14/09/2012 15:23

My dad used to buy the Whole Earth one in a tub!

Ciske · 14/09/2012 15:28

There was a commercial in the 80s/90s in the Netherlands that claimed that all good sports people grew up on bread with peanut butter. Partly inspired by this, I've always put it under the list of hearty foods that are part of a joyful childhood.

Either way, most things are ok in moderation.

Traceymac2 · 14/09/2012 15:34

I have always thought that peanut butter was a healthy nutrient packed food, it just has lots of calories.

Ephiny · 14/09/2012 15:36

Peanut butter is tasty and good for you (I've never seen one with added sugar), what's not to like? It's obviously quite calorie-dense so you have to watch the portion size if you're worried about weight gain, but that doesn't make it a 'bad' food.

thebeesnees79 · 14/09/2012 16:59

butkin I love reeces butter cups mmmmmm
my arse and thighs don't though hahaha

bigsnugglebunny · 14/09/2012 17:02

shakes fist darn you all... I've just bought a load of cashew nut butter from H&B! MMmmmm

CaliforniaLeaving · 14/09/2012 22:45

Peanut butter lovers here too. Grin I caught Dh sitting at the computer with the whole jar and a spoon last night. I gave him the Hmm and told him that it's nuttella you eat with a spoon. Grin
Peanut prices are up a lot here, due to weather and a jar of the good stuff (no sugar and no nasty chemicals) it now very high. Dh eats it daily, peanut butter and strawberry jam for work lunch, no need to refrigerate so it's good in the heat we have.
Oh and here it's not recommended for babies under a year because of allergies.

BikeRunSki · 14/09/2012 22:51

Stays - but the health food shop Suma, Meridien type. Just crushed up nuts, the Sun Pat stuff is too sweet and claggy.

MissBeehivingUnderTheMistletoe · 14/09/2012 22:57

YABU - peanut butter is the divvils work. You should be feeding them marmite Grin

Notcontent · 14/09/2012 23:01

Yes, we also get the whole earth one and I am very happy for dd to have it!! Great source of protein. Stay away from the ones with sugar.
