I don't like them. I have tried.

I keep trying thinking that they may have pulled their finger out and made nice soups, however I am always disappointed.

Latest travesty - beetroot and horseradish soup, which had a maximum of 1/1000th of a gram of horseradish, no seasoning and an overwhelmingly sweet beetroot taste. Crap.

And before that a mexican type soup - NO bloody chilli in it whatsoever.

The tomato and basil - no bloody basil.

Chicken - I think that chicken had a miserable life as it tasted of fuck all.

Why can't they make nice soups? The Tesco finest soups are nice. Those other ones in a tub whose names escape me (they also do a skinny range) are lovely.

Not a patch on ones I can make myself. The mulligatawny one was alright, and I had one that was butternut and sweet potato and coconut or something, that was quite nice. Generally, though, I avoid.

And don't get me started on fucking Innocent veg pots, they are VILE.

pictish · 13/09/2012 16:47

Yanbu - they're crap, and verge on being quite unpleasant.

Whenever I've bought one (only a handful of times) I heat up half of the carton, decide it's not very nice soup, and chuck away the other half.

I think I've tried about four of them and didn't like a single one.

QuickLookBusy · 13/09/2012 16:48

Oh Boer I agree re the flatulence.

I once had leak and potato and spent a very uncomfortable afternoon. What do they put in to make that happen I wonder?

Chandon · 13/09/2012 16:49

vegetables? Wink

Chandon · 13/09/2012 16:52

In the olden days, the carrot and coriander was nice. It was done with coriander seeds, as you're supposed to, but people must have complained about lack of green bits, so now it contains coriander leaves which makes no sense (and is not as nice).

I find them edible, if not exciting, and buy when on offer, and add salt and pepper.

I think it contains quite a lot of veg, which I like. Still, like so many things, they were fab when launched (in the 90s?) and then gradually started to put less or cheaper ingredients in and think we don't notice.

We do!!!

cornzy · 13/09/2012 16:53

I went through a phase of eating soup all the time over the summer and I tried loads. Duchy is nicest - love their pea and mint. All the other fresh ones are horrible. Waitrose do some okayish tinned ones though. And heinz tomato is lovely obviously.

MadBusLady · 13/09/2012 16:56

YANBU. There is no detectable carrot in the carrot & coriander. No posh soup I've ever had has been as nice as the most basic stock cube-and-manky-veg thing you can do at home except Heinz cream of chicken when you are ill

NellyJob · 13/09/2012 16:56

the old wrinkled veg from the back of your fridge, a baby food whizzer and a slop of cream makes something for about 30 pence that tastes a hundred times better than stupid covent garden soup company. Imagine their mark up!

NellyJob · 13/09/2012 16:56

x post re manky veg

MadBusLady · 13/09/2012 16:57

Clearly we just have a lot of manky veg Blush

CurlyhairedAssassin · 13/09/2012 16:58

I used to like them but stopped eating them after suspecting that they caused chronic wind and at least 2 bouts of food poisoning. Just didn't trust the manufacturing/pasteurisation of them - very long dated and quite often if you leave them in the fridge the cartons seem to expand with air as if they are fermenting or something.

CremeEggThief · 13/09/2012 16:58

YABU. I even liked the pear and pepper one. So there!

fragola · 13/09/2012 17:00

I find them watery and salty. I've given up thinking that each new one might be okay.

NellyJob · 13/09/2012 17:01

tee hee let's print this page and send it to them

WelshMaenad · 13/09/2012 17:10

Stock from boiling a gammon joint, some yellow split peas, some manky veg. Manna from heaven.

EyesCrossedLegsAkimbo · 13/09/2012 17:10

Or send them a link to it on Twitter.

complexnumber · 13/09/2012 17:21

DP is just about to tuck into all time smoked haddock chowder. No complaints yet.

Personally I used to love the Teco Finest Onion soup, I'm sure there was a hint of sherry in there.

Piping hot with thick cut heavily buttered fresh bread, not forgetting a huge portion of finely grated extra mature cheddar.

Sadly I have not seen this soup recently.

nellyjob do it if you want but they'll send you a voucher for a lavender and lemongrass soup or whatever their soup of the month is.

The tea-towels are very acceptable though

PeshwariNaan · 13/09/2012 17:48

Sorry, I'm not with you on this one! The tomato marscapone soup has been my best friend for pregnant-lady lunches. It's brilliant.

I like Yorkshire Provender soup, especially the fresh pea one.
Very light.

I love onion soup but it doesn't like me Blush

best soups I've ever had are at Grayshott spa. Lovely, all of them.

BoerWarKids · 13/09/2012 21:27

Oh good, glad it's not just me with the flatulence.
My guts seize up at the memory of those rancid farts Sad

What do you say to that eh, New Convent Garden?
I'm sure they've seen this thread already. I bet a klaxon goes off in their office when they're being slagged off on t'internets.

BoerWarKids · 13/09/2012 21:29

*Covent. Grr.

crackcrackcrak · 13/09/2012 21:34

you're not wrong they are shite. i have 2 clogging my freezer i may never bother to eat

neuroticmumof3 · 13/09/2012 21:37

They used to do a gorgeous tomato and creme fraiche which I adored but I haven't seen it for years. Carrot and coriander used to be good but is now shite. Tomato and basil one made me heave for some reason. I occasionally buy them if they're on offer but am always disappointed.
