Poop bags and bins

putonyourredshoes · 13/09/2012 12:54

One of the main reasons people claim for not picking up dog poop is that there are a very limited number of official poop bins.

Would it be unreasonable to drop the bags into normal house wheely bins? I can't work out whether it's practical and to be encouraged or a disgusting abuse of someone else's property.

It's well known that on Mumsnet no-one has ever left a poop unbagged. Hmm

Well...LRD.....i know people who wont pick up poo, and their reason is not wanting to carry it with them. And, people are lazy, and if there is a bin right there you are more likey to put it in? Im also thinking of the people who will bag it, then hang it out in trees etc.

Yes, in Utopia ALL dog owners would poo-scoop and take it home, but, I live in the real world.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 13/09/2012 16:16

Yes, I know people like that too. They should not be allowed to own dogs, and they should be fined. It's revolting.

I do see what you're saying and obviously some people will always be dirty selfish fuckers. But I really don't want dog poo in my bin, or to shell out extra council tax to 'thank' people for this sort of thing.

BananaBubbles · 13/09/2012 16:22

You should never put the bags in bins that don't belong to you. I have a dog and cat,and their poop goes in our bin, bagged, and the smell is absolutely revolting after a few days.

It's not right to put anything in a bin that doesn't belong to you,or which isn't a bin intended for public use.

I don't care if you, general you, have to carry it around in the bag for an hour. That's just too bad. It's part of being a dog owner.

RustyBear · 13/09/2012 16:37

"I bag my dogs shit when she goes in the garden and bin it....why does it matter if someone else puts theirs in your bin,as long as its bagged, whats the problem"

It would matter in our area, as we only have 80 rubbish bags to last all year - if someone lived next to the local park, their bins would soon fill up with other peoples' dogs' shit...

ScarlettInSpace · 13/09/2012 16:51

I don't really understand why people are saying they bag & bin what their pet does in their own garden; personally I pick it up with tissue & flush it down the loo as I hate the thought of it festering in my bin outside my door for days and stinking everytime we open it to put the daily rubbish in, so I totally agree with non-pet owners about not wanting other people to put their shit in my bin, bagged or otherwise.

Although my puppydog is a small dog so his poos are proportinate [sp?].

I always always always bag & bin what he does when we are out and about though, but I try to get him to do it before we go for a walk so I don't have to in the first place smug puppydog owner whose pet toilets on command can't get him to stop chewing everything to destruction however

WelshMaenad · 13/09/2012 16:55

Rustybear, do you mean you can only have a max of 80 bags of rubbish collected in a year?

WelshMaenad · 13/09/2012 16:57

It was my understanding that you aren't supposed to flush pet waste due to risk if toxoplasmosis in the water supply? I might be wrk g, I often am.

takeonboard · 13/09/2012 16:58

It wouldn't bother me at all as long as the bag was tied properly.

It drives me mad that people bag their dogs poo then throw it in the gutter/road. Have you ever driven over one? I have, it exploded all over my wheel, I couldn't open my window and had to get my car washed - yuk!

messtins · 13/09/2012 17:03

I think it's unreasonable to put any rubbish in someone's private bin. Properly bagged dog poo in a public litter bin I think is fine.
I don't do it, but I think the little piles of bagged poo left in parks etc is a message to the council, who are very free with their "bag it and bin it" notices, but less forthcoming with actual bins in many places.
Peope who just leave the poo lying around are just vile.

flapperghasted · 13/09/2012 17:07

I would never use a private, residential bin for my dogs poo. My dog, my problem. I would use a general waste bin in the park and I frequently do. That's what they're there for, surely? As long as poo is bagged, don't see the problem.

Sassybeast · 13/09/2012 17:15

I wouldn't have any problem at all with people chucking bagged up poo in my bin. I'd much rather they did that than let their bloody dogs crap all over my garden.
I can see why people would't be happy though so I will always double bag and take it to the nearest public bin.

RustyBear · 13/09/2012 17:32

WelshMaenad- Only the 'official' bags get collected; you get 80 a year (though you can apply for an extra supply if you have a larger family, not sure of the numbers) If you run out you have to buy more from the council at a vastly inflated rate. When the bags were being delivered in April, they were left on doorsteps and a lot of them disappeared before the house owners got home.

StormGlass · 13/09/2012 18:30

It's unreasonable to drop your dog poop, even if bagged, into someone else's house wheely bin.

If there aren't enough dog poo bins, you should put the bagged poop into your own wheely bin, or a public bin. Not someone's private bin.

Round here, the general rubbish bins only get collected fortnightly. It wouldn't be fair to fill someone's bin with other people's dog poo, so they've potentially not got enough room for their own rubbish, just because they're unfortunate enough to live near popular dog walking areas.

TidyGOLDDancer · 13/09/2012 18:32

You can't put it in someone else's bin, but you can put it into yours, or a public litter bin.

FrustratedSycamorePants · 13/09/2012 18:40

The poo bags handed out by my local council say "bag it and bin it, any bin will do"

clam · 13/09/2012 19:29

Only skimmed replies, so apologies if someone else has said this, but I would guess that the poo bags hanging from bushes are from people whose dogs have done a poo early on on a walk and their owners are planning on picking it up on the way back, rather than carrying it all the way.

Canidae · 13/09/2012 20:44

I wouldn't even think of putting it in someone's bin. It either goes in a poo bin/public bin or I take it home. Not the nicest of tasks but must be done.

Anonymumous · 13/09/2012 21:07

Gosh, I wouldn't even consider putting ordinary rubbish (like sweet wrappers) in someone else's bin, let alone dog poo. WTF?! That's someone else's private property - you can't just dump your foul-smelling bags in there because you can't be bothered carrying them! I'm aghast that you should even have the cheek to ask. Take it home with you and stink your own property out with it, you weirdo!

(Incidentally, we had to pay our council £25 for our wheelie bin. By my calculations, that makes it our property - not theirs.)
