To wonder why MN is obsessed with class?

Having read yet another class related thread here, I confess to being puzzled by it. I am a foreigner but have lived in the UK for 15 years and am married to an Englishman. I can honestly say that in all my social interactions here "social class" has never been a factor that has determined anything in my life - be it finding friends, getting a job, etc. Of course lots of other things have been factors - my foreignness, education levels, income levels but never whether I say "napkin" or "serviette" or where I buy my groceries etc.

Is it different for the posters in the "class" threads? Has it ever made it difference to your day to day lives as to what class you were. Or are these just academic discussions (albeit interesting ones) to while away some time? But if so, then why do they crop up again and again?

The Upper class most definitely care about class if anything is done to impinge on their inherited perks.
Hence why very well connected but rather dim children still get into the top schools and firms.

But until I reached secondary school and got judged by a wc group because of my middle classness, it would not have occurred to me, to judge people on their backgrounds!

Any indications of 'class' from our screen names then?

:)

(BTW OP you are probably correct in assuming that, because you describe yourself as foreign you are outside the British class system).

TalkinPeace, I suppose in that way they do. But I can't imagine any of the titled people I know being horrified that someone is wearing George at Asda, or at the state of their front room etc, in that MC way.

Or maybe my friends are just nice people Grin which would make sense too as I would drop someone like hot coal if they were the type to judge you on your flooring or whatever Grin

Never had a conversation involving class before, other than to mention that the distinction exists. Perhaps I don't move in the right circles :)

theodorakis · 11/09/2012 15:08

it's only a few on here like with most things. Most people don't care.

Are you from Crete, Theodorakis? Smile Someone told me once that the -kis suffix comes from Crete.

Sorry for the weird tangent. I like Greek.

Silibilimili · 11/09/2012 15:18

All this sounds so similar to the Indian caste system! Confused

theodorakis · 11/09/2012 15:20

Yes I am! Half greek anyway. Yes, the akis people are generally the Greekest of Greek people personality wise. My husband said that is why we get through so many clutches on the car...

Grin

Cool! Some of the very nicest and funnest people I have known are -akisses too! But yeah, I wouldn't get into a car with them Grin

My family are fab. They sound like they are going to murder each other but all they are doing is deciding how to have the eggs for lunch.
