To think that the word "only" should not go with £799 for a pushchair

I know it's a bugaboo and ours has been very good value as we bought the frog for our first and it's still goung string for our third dd but it's still expensive.

Sorry-just had mothercare email advertising the chameleon 3 which said "only £799"

absolutely. But then I think £70 is the maximum I'd pay anyway, for something that'll be needed 3 years maximum. tightwad

midori1999 · 10/09/2012 20:03

Well I wouldn't say 'only' but we paid about that for our pram.

Can you even get a pram/pushchair for £70?

lovebunny · 10/09/2012 20:04

what a silly name. i wouldn't pay anything at all for something with a name like bugaboo, they can keep it.

Stealth boast or what??

SmileItsSunny · 10/09/2012 20:06

FriedEggs - you can, loads of people give you stuff, you can raid charity shops, ebay and freecycle. It's nowhere near as expensive as people can make it!

SchrodingersMew · 10/09/2012 20:06

I knew this would be about a Bugaboo when I seen it, thought it would be the Donkey Mono though!

You want to see the amount of baby stuff on freecycle round here - stairgates, moses baskets and tons of baby clothes, some unworn.

thecook · 10/09/2012 20:11

FriedEggsandHam Seen lots of buggies on freecycle.

EdMcDunnough · 10/09/2012 20:11

Oh I got that email about four times today (something wrong with email settings)

It's a huge amount of money. I actually got excited about having a cameleon when I was first pg and bought the chassis new - but seeing as we already had a second hand, rather used frog, I soon realised it was a waste of money.

Have now got a spare chassis lying around but I doubt I'll buy the rest.

I like Bugaboo as a company - they are Dutch and fairly sensible - but it's still a rip off.

EdMcDunnough · 10/09/2012 20:12

Not as much of a rip off as anything made by Stokke though. Sorry.

Keep seeing xplories round here and Mothercare is full of them. Particularly dislike the go-kart style steering ellipse.

Katienana · 10/09/2012 20:15

Someone has to pay full price for the stuff otherwise there would be nothing available to buy second hand.

DilysPrice · 10/09/2012 20:17

Like all my ante-natal class mates I got 200 quids worth of Mamas and Papas lie-flat buggy for my PFB back in the early 2000s.

2 years later I ran an NCT post natal coffee morning. 3 women turned up and I suddenly realised there was two thousand pounds worth of pushchairs sitting in my hall. How the hell did that happen? Still can't get used to that being a sane price to pay for a single pushchair.

EdMcDunnough · 10/09/2012 20:18

I'm not sure if the Frog ever cost £800 odd quid though Katie? Did it?

Hmm. Oh well. I mean they are lovely new. Just too, too much.

choceyes · 10/09/2012 20:21

Have to say I love our bugaboo cameleon. Although it did cost a bit less 4yrs ago ( £650 including maxi cosi car seat). Still going strong for dc2 and bugaboo replaced the full chassis and material when the straps and brake broke (my fault) 2yrs ago no quibbles.

LilyCocoplatt · 10/09/2012 20:21

Expensive travel systems are a complete unnecessary pain in the arse IMHO, I had one but thankfully not one of the mega expensive ones and it was ditched in favour of a lightweight stroller pretty quickly, if I had my time again I would just get a decent stroller which is suitable from birth and folds small and use that from the start, something like the petite star which isn't extortionately expensive. I can't believe people pay silly prices for pushchairs (and I agree that those stokke ones look bloody stupid anyway).

Flossiechops · 10/09/2012 20:25

Isn't buying a bugaboo (or something of equal cost) a bit like buying a designer hand bag. It does the same job as cheaper versions but it demonstrates that it's owner has more money! Crazy crazy amount of money to spend imho but horses for course and all that

Lambzig · 10/09/2012 20:28

I knew that this would quickly turn to Stokke bashing.

Some people like Stokke/Bugaboo/i-candy, can afford them and want them. Some people can afford big houses/nice cars etc and want them. whats the big deal?

(but agree with OP, nothing is only £799)

DontmindifIdo · 10/09/2012 20:29

Hmm, a lot of people seem to prefer the lightweight buggys, but having both (got a cheap folding one for the nursery run when DS was 11 months as I didn't want to leave the icandy one all day in the insecure buggy store at nursery) the difference is massive. I hate DS being forward facing - the nursery run is short enough but for a 'whole day' trip it makes it really hard to interact with them. Also, every lightweight one I've found are harder to push, tiny wheels, crap suspention and handles where you can't change the height to suit you aren't great for pushing for long distances.

however, you can get rear facing with decent wheels for a lot less than £800...

IvanaNap · 10/09/2012 20:29

I saw a mum group recently in a cafe.
It was like a 1980's skit on what The Future would look like; all robotic-looking uber-slick own-it-or-you're-nobody prams and "systems".
I would say I judged, but I was to busy Grin ing and brushed it off as madness.

DontmindifIdo · 10/09/2012 20:31

Oh, I wouldn't by a Stokke, but then I am short, I know very tall mothers who've found pushing 'normal' sized buggies mean they have to lean over all the time, if you do a lot of walking without being able to stand up straight (espcially pushing a heavy buggy) can completely knacker your back. If I was leggy, I would think a Stokke was worth it.
