That my children don't watch EE/Corrie/Emmerdale etc?

My children are 11,9 and 6.

They watch plenty of rubbish on TV but other children and parents seem surprised that they don't watch Eastenders, Corrie, Emmerdale, etc.

They've been perplexed when asked their opinions on story lines like who Kat is having an affair with.

Their usual TV viewing is programmes on Disney Channel, Cartoon Network, Nick etc.

I am ready to be told that soap viewing is normal at primary/first year at secondary but back in the 80s I watched programmes like Neighbours, Home and Away and Grange Hill which was aimed at kids.

Oh god, who gives a stuff about the opinions of soap-watchers?

Inneedofbrandy · 10/09/2012 14:11

I don't watch tv apart from films, the kids watch children's channels. I would feel uncomfortable talking about someone's affair to a 11 9 or 6yr old.

Floralnomad · 10/09/2012 14:13

YANBU . I don't watch soaps so my DC's have never watched them either, although there are enough TV's in this house that they could if they wanted.

vodkaanddietirnbru · 10/09/2012 14:13

I dont watch those soaps, or xfactor or any of the dance ones so my kids will be missing out too!

OrangeHorraceTheGoldenOtter · 10/09/2012 14:14

YANBU! Nobody should watch the bloody things, let alone little ones. Horrible programs, no children should be exposed to death and DV.

HokeyCokeyPigInAPokey · 10/09/2012 14:14

YANBU dd1 is 9 and i don't let her watch soaps either.

If she wants to watch tv she has CBBC or CITV

CleoSmackYa · 10/09/2012 14:14

My daughter doesn't watch these things, and she's never asked. She is only 6 though.

2girls2dogs · 10/09/2012 14:15

You have to ask?

sugarice · 10/09/2012 14:17

Way too depressing for young kids to be watching in my opinion.

BegoniaBampot · 10/09/2012 14:18

we don't watch any soaps anyway (been dry for about 7 yrs now). Think they are very inappropriate for young children - they are all dire and depressing anyway.

WhatYouLookingAt · 10/09/2012 14:18

They aren't suitable for children, surely? I don't watch soaps but from what I read about them they seem full of screaming, fighting, pushing people off cliffs and worse. Why would anyone encourage their children to watch that stuff?

ScarletLady02 · 10/09/2012 14:20

They should put Sunset Beach back on.....now THAT is a soap Grin

Startailoforangeandgold · 10/09/2012 14:20

No soaps here and I gave up on Holby when it stopped having medical drama just who was shagging who amongst the staff.

I think DD2 (11) has been known to google plot summaries to know what the hell her friends are talking about.

But she's never asked to watch them, she iplayers xfactor etc sometimes, but not the soaps.

MrsRobertDuvallHasRosacea · 10/09/2012 14:21

Mine didn't.
Now they are 16 and 13, Corrie is their favourite programme.

BitOutOfPractice · 10/09/2012 14:25

Only soap me and my kids follow is the Archers

My 12 and 9 YOs have never expressed any interest in watching soaps.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 10/09/2012 14:26

Mine are 8 and 6 and they don't watch any adult drama and certainly soaps won't be allowed anytime soon. I watch Corrie after they are in bed or during the day on Sky+.

The only adult programmes they watch are sports, Total Wipeout, Strictly, the National Lottery show, Great British Bake-off, that sort of thing. Mostly it's still Disney channel.

ilovetermtime · 10/09/2012 14:27

Ha ha Scarlet, I agree, and that one that was set in Spain, what was it called again?

YANBU, I would never let my primary age children watch them. Apart from anything else, they're so depressing. I don't want my kids to think that that is what 'grown-ups' lifes are like (I appreciate that some people's are, but not where we live!).

ilovetermtime · 10/09/2012 14:27

Eldorado!!!

itsjustmeanon · 10/09/2012 14:29

I've never watched soaps, and neither do my parents. My DH used to watch Corrie and Eastenders, as do his parents, but even he doesn't bother anymore.

MrsBovary · 10/09/2012 14:30

People ask an 11 year old (and younger) their opinion on a soap character's affair Confused

You are not being unreasonable. My children don't watch any soaps, and they've never really shown any interest in doing so.

JeremyKylesPetProject · 10/09/2012 14:30

I love Corrie and Emmerdale. I loved how yet another mum to be delivered her baby in the Rovers and in the time honoured tradition of soaps there was no time to get to the hospital, have pain relief or let the baby develop an umbilical cord. I'm all about keeping it real. The day a soap character is given pethidine or a section is the day I switch off.

MrsBovary · 10/09/2012 14:31

I don't watch any, and even gave up on the Archers.

BegoniaBampot · 10/09/2012 14:37

Now Sunset Beach was classy! The channel announcers comments as the credits rolled used to crack me up. Annie was the best!

amck5700 · 10/09/2012 14:39

We don't watch tv at all (well a bit of news and the olympics and stuff) The kids have their own tv room and eldest has a tv/computer screen in his bedroom and they have allocated screen time but they choose to play computer games/watch you tube videos or dvds rather than watch tv. I don't think it's that unusual not to watch soaps.
