That my children don't watch EE/Corrie/Emmerdale etc?

My children are 11,9 and 6.

They watch plenty of rubbish on TV but other children and parents seem surprised that they don't watch Eastenders, Corrie, Emmerdale, etc.

They've been perplexed when asked their opinions on story lines like who Kat is having an affair with.

Their usual TV viewing is programmes on Disney Channel, Cartoon Network, Nick etc.

I am ready to be told that soap viewing is normal at primary/first year at secondary but back in the 80s I watched programmes like Neighbours, Home and Away and Grange Hill which was aimed at kids.

I don't watch them, so why should my kids?

Wipeout is a firm favourite in our house too.

BegoniaBampot · 10/09/2012 14:45

Wipeout makes me LOL every time! Great family TV.

BlackberryIce · 10/09/2012 14:47

They will watch them at friends houses.... Or over the Internet.

JeremyKylesPetProject · 10/09/2012 14:48

Wipeout is ace. I won't lie I used to like that Wet wall show with Anton du Beke too.

Dawndonna · 10/09/2012 14:57

Mine are 16 and 17. They don't watch soaps, either.

Darkesteyeswithflecksofgold · 10/09/2012 14:58

I dont really watch any except Corrie because my DH likes it... which brings me to a real bugbear of mine. Dh likes Corrie and i prefer dramas and crime thrillers. I particularly love the Bletchley Circle which started last week. And i love Whitechapel George Gently etc.
But when ive mentioned to people that DH likes Corrie and i prefer crime thrillers they INSIST it must be the other way around simply because he wears boxers and i wear a bra!

Darkesteyeswithflecksofgold · 10/09/2012 14:59

And as for Eastenders i cant stand it because of ALL THE FUCKING SHOUTING.

I watch the soaps, if i am in.

My DD's started watching them in their teens.

My middle one liked Holly Oaks and we and her friends, used a lot of the story lines as discussion subjects.

I use television, films, Dvd's etc as a teaching aid for my youngest with LD's.

I think teens should be exposed to the topics in soaps and they are useful in raising issues.

squeakytoy · 10/09/2012 15:06

I grew up watching Emmerdale and Corrie. Eastenders hadnt started when I was a kid, but it is so crap I doubt my mum would have watched it anyway.

I dont see any harm in children watching the soaps either.

Kidsdrivingmecrazy · 10/09/2012 16:19

Yanbu. Dd (9) asked why she can't watch EE as some of her classmates do. Turns out the 5 or so people that do are the real chavvy kids. (the ones whose parents couldn't give a shit what they watch or what they do.) why does she need to know who Kat is shagging? She is 9 for gods sake!

ScarletLady02 · 10/09/2012 16:23

RE Sunset Beach - I loved the Rosario Jewels story-line where everyone turned into mummies Grin

And the turkey baster!!

Classic...

You can watch them all on Youtube. I always found the fantasy sequences hilarious...and the fact that one day took about 12 episodes.

Debs75 · 10/09/2012 16:24

I don't watch any crap soaps so none of my 4 watch them
TBH the younger 2 (2 amd 3) prefer cartoon network and batman. DS(13) likes Mario Kart videos and Thomas and DD1(16) can't stand any 'chavvy'(her words) telly including X-factor, BB, Britains got talent and I'm a celebrity

crazygracieuk · 10/09/2012 16:29

Thanks.
I asked because it has cropped up in conversation a few times recently and my kids and I have been unable to comment as we don't watch them.

Eldorado!!!

Loving the retro memories, ilovetermtime!

I wonder if any else remembers Albion Market?

achillea · 10/09/2012 16:38

Tonight we have Flog it, Pointless, an hour of news, then Panorama, then East Enders. The other channels have a similar array of non-family friendly programmes.
I think the programmes assume that families only spend time together on Saturday and Sunday afternoons?

Secret7 · 10/09/2012 16:45

I will watch soaps if I'm in and there's nothing else on.

DD1 aged 12 watches Corrie and EE and looks forward to my DM's TV mag coming through the door each week. She regularly makes references to them in rl - if my magazine is out of stock she will make a comment like "I bet Norris would have it in the Cabin".

Don't see any harm in watching.

singingmum · 10/09/2012 16:50

Yanbu my son is 18 now and is so very proud of us for never making him be tortured by the utter drivel of soap operas. He claims it just melts the brain and destroys creativity, he is correct which is why when my dd's friend (both 12) asked her to watch eastenders my dd told her that she doesn't watch junk tv and they could watch horrible histories instead as it was better for them lol

LadyBeagleEyes · 10/09/2012 16:54

I used to watch Corrie but stopped as it started to become 'issue' led like EE.
They're all the same now, utterly depressing.
When i was a kid I used to rush home for Crossroads Grin, yes I'm that old.
Now that's what I call a soap. Meg Richardson, Miss Diane and Amy Turtle.
And not forgetting Benny.
Ds never had any interest, he doesn't want misery pumped into the room either.
Neighbours was good in it's heyday too.

Hulababy · 10/09/2012 16:57

DD is 10y and we don't watch soaps like EE, etc.
DD does enjoy Holby City when she gets in late on drama night though, I have to admit. Not really seen anything in it that would be deemed a bit dodgy though.

thunderbird5 · 10/09/2012 17:10

ive never understood why the soaps are shown at the times theyre shown, before so-called-watershed? Why do people watch them in the 1st place? and as for children? ee is the worst of the lot, but all...drinking is the cure for everything, abortions as soon as someone (usually underage) gets pregnant, incest, adultery, fisticuffs, extortion, sex sex sex, you name it they do it, and no ones relationship ever lasts more than an episode only thing they DONT do, and im surprised, is the f word, but the shouting and insults..i know cos I used to watch ee but no more. and then people wonder why current culture is the way it is, if all this is what influences (amongst other things) . that its ok to be disrespectful, ok to have sex with anyone you like, ok to drink to oblivion, oh but its ok, its just acting, its not real. thats the excuse isnt it? (gosh I sound like Mary Whitehouse!!)If youve got loads of channels theres plenty of other things to watch...my dc (11) likes disney/nick jr and all the other kids channels, vintage tv (sky 369)which shows mostly decent non-porno videos, and sports.

Kidsdrivingmecrazy · 10/09/2012 17:19

Totally agree with you thunderbird. Kids are watching it thinking it's normal to behave like that. You surely have to be a bit thick to let young kids watch it. If you have to watch the crap do it when the kids are in bed. (we do have sky+ - its not like you have to watch it when the kids are around.)
