To be annoyed that taxi ranks don't let families in first.

More like a rant really, sorry if it was covered before.

When we came back from holiday with the Eurostar, we went to the taxi rank. I had DC3 on the sling on my front (4 months), a backpack on my back and the babybag on the side, while holding the hands of DC1 and 2 (aged 2 and 4). DH had 2 large suitcases, a backpack and bag. I told DH we will go to the front immediately because priority is given to families and seriously with all our baggage you could tell we were not taking the piss.

When we got there, there were the paralympic guides helping people get into the taxis, when she turned to us and asked : 'Oh sorry, who came first'. There were these Carrie Bradshaw-like fashionistas to go in front of us. I told the guide that we just came in, but usually families with babies usually go first. She told me she never heard of that, and that unless we were disabled or something..........
Then one of the fashionistas took a look at all our baggage and said it's fine we can go, at which her friend said : 'Oh no, are you sure?'. Eventually we were let in, but I could not help but say to my husband, one of the fashionistas look great on the outside, but just cold on the inside. What kind of inconsiderate society have we become?

In France, there are signs all over main taxi ranks, that you let the pregnant, disabled, families with babies and tots, etc. go in before. We even naturally get called to the front by the usher as we arrive.
I realised that people in london are less keen, one day we did that, and some guy rushed to the taxi to go in front of us, and the taxi driver turned him away and told him : 'don't you see those people need more help?'.

Even before I was pregnant and had kids, I always left the lift, seats etc. to the mums and elders, so all this behaviour surprises me.

blackpool potentially forever

you could make a film, about a person who got stuck at a taxi rank for years Grin

(quite a boring film, mind!)

Psammead · 10/09/2012 13:35

27 points by your very comprehensive system, Dawn, what can I get for 27 points?

OP, while I think it is nice to be offered priority when heavily pregnant and with luggage and children in tow, it is not my 'right'. I know I get dizzy when standing for too long, and I simply have to factor that in to journeys which could involve a lot of standing around. It's not like it was a sudden shock that you had lots of children and luggage with you at a taxi rank, was it?

jellyboatsandpirates · 10/09/2012 13:36

Eh? Since when does having children and millions of suitcases give you an automatic right to to go straight to the front of a taxi queue?! Confused
Wishful thinking on your part, I think, but nice try...

imonthefone · 10/09/2012 13:36

dawn thanks for the Brew- have some [brownie]

it is a very complicated business, we will be here some time

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 10/09/2012 13:36

At the airport you get a priority if you have a child or children with you. It's nit such a huge leap if imagination if the OP thought it was similar with taxis.

In European countries, they even let you in front of the queue in shops. Works well for other customers too that they dont have to listen to a tired, screaming child.

Maybe it's not a done thing over here but no meed to Clutch your pearls and scream 'entitled! gasp'.

LackingNameChangeInspiration · 10/09/2012 13:37

I only get 18 points anyway Grin so may never get to the front

Northernlurkerisbackatwork · 10/09/2012 13:37

I would get between 14 and 19 points (assuming I count as mother of 3 when one is 14....) I'll go to the back of the queue

DawnOfTheDee · 10/09/2012 13:37

Psammead I think you have exactly the same amount of points as the OP. In case of a tie you must wrestle to see who goes first.

MonkeyRisotto · 10/09/2012 13:37

I've figured it out, this was a Parent and Child taxi rank, wasn't it?

ArielThePiraticalMermaid · 10/09/2012 13:38

I only saw the headline of this thread and thought it would definitely be at least a 10-pager Grin

By your definition, OP, people like myself who are unfortunately infertile, should be reminded of it every time they try and get a taxi. Not keen. Sorry.

Psammead · 10/09/2012 13:38

It's different at the airport. If you have small children, you need longer on the aircraft to get them settled and seated. It just causes a big queue if they let you all on at the same time. It's to everyone's benefit that they get you out of the way asap.

LackingNameChangeInspiration · 10/09/2012 13:38

If I pack REALLY BADLY and have lots of bags hanging off me can I boost my points?

RichManPoorManBeggarmanThief · 10/09/2012 13:38

You should move to Dubai. They have "ladies" queues in all banks and government buildings. If you go in the bank and there is a queue and no designated ladies queue, they open another window just for you. They also bring families to the front of immigration queues at the airport.

However, thinking about it, the airport taxi queue was still a 10 deep dog-eat-dog scrum, so maybe you wouldn't like it. At least the Brits know how to queue Grin

MyLastDuchess · 10/09/2012 13:39

In European countries, they even let you in front of the queue in shops.

Which countries are these? Not the one I live in (NL)!!!

Xayide · 10/09/2012 13:39

It's usually longer than that when when you come out of a full train.

First time we went on holiday - DC were 4,3,1 and DH was on crutches. Should have been 4 and half hour train journey plus taxis both ends. Delays made it 6 half hour train journey. Baby was strapped to my back in carrier, and eldest DC had a case as well as me.

We had to wait in the taxi ranks at the train stations at destination and on return. It is what is considered normal behavior though it clearly wasn't an easy or enjoyable experience.

OP your expectations are a little odd - so I can see why the rest of the queue was pissed off with you.

missymoomoomee · 10/09/2012 13:39

Not fair Dawn I only get 23 points Psammead can go in front of me in any queues, why don't I get points for my 10yo? I shall have to go and ask DH to impregnate me again and hope I get sciatica and spd and morning sickness again so I can get some more points and never have to queue again.

Sirzy · 10/09/2012 13:39

thank you madbuslady.

And airports letting families through first? Since when?

DawnOfTheDee · 10/09/2012 13:40

Good point Lacking.

The first 2 bags you have attract no points. For every additional bag you can have two points (3 if it's packed really badly).

LackingNameChangeInspiration · 10/09/2012 13:41

missymoom I think you can still trump Psammead if you pack badly? I'm not sure?

DreamsTurnToGoldDust · 10/09/2012 13:41

Lived in London for years, never heard of it, but I do know that when people are queueing for taxis, they are usually going somewhere, ie. they need to be somewhere Grin and its not only families, single people making a journey aswell.

Bloody mad init!

DawnOfTheDee · 10/09/2012 13:41

Now you're getting the hang of it missy. Make sure you leave DH at home though so you can get your extra 5 points.

BartiiMus · 10/09/2012 13:42

Talking about points, I remember being in the supermarket once with a pregnant woman in front of me. Another pregnant woman marched right up to the front. So the woman in front of me said "excuse me I"m pregnant too" and the second woman said "where's your card? When's your due date?" Shock

'Cos in theory in France when pregnant you get a pregnancy card so you can go to the front of certain queues (only public/government related stuff usually) which gives your due date. The woman wanted to compare cards to see who had priority!!! Hmm Confused Grin

I say in theory 'cos I never received one...

ChestyNut · 10/09/2012 13:42

Aaaaaw but it's not fair... In going to be stood in this queue til Christmas though

Can I have some honorary points please?

LackingNameChangeInspiration · 10/09/2012 13:42

see that's where I've been going wrong - I pack the change bag in the top of one of the big bags, so its handy but not hanging off me.. no wonder I've never been pulled out of the que!

MadBusLady · 10/09/2012 13:42

I have asthma!

My points are still rubbish though, I think I'll just take the juicer and six wineglasses please Dawn.
