It's not about what you own or where you live. It's about cultural capital as mentioned upthread -- and habits of mind/ assumptions you would never consciously think about too; if you have to think about what or who you are then you are not It. If you do something or buy something because that is what We do and that is the primary element of your decision, then you are not It. There is a difference between having a certain lifestyle and having a certain state of mind.

Have The Fifth Element on in the background as I finish labels. Milla Jovovich looks so good in it. Costumes are great too.

Not been to a proper uni, not middle class. It doesn't matter how much you earn.

Goldchilled7up · 09/09/2012 21:37

What is a proper uni? Some ex polys might be better in subjects such as engineering no?

OP posts:
scarlettsmummy2 · 09/09/2012 21:42

Maybe I should re phrase that- a degree that requires some effort to get on to, not a degree for degrees sake that you can get On to with rubbish a level results. A degree doesn't automatically make you middle class but you cant really be middle class without one or at least have parents who are university educated.

BonnieBumble · 09/09/2012 21:44

Ok Scarlettsmummy so you have two brothers one of them gets 2 AAB in A levels and accepts a place at Bath on a Social Sciences course and gets a job in local government, the other brother gets BBB and goes off to study Automotive Engineering at Hertfordshire Uni. Brother number 2 can't be middle class because he went to an ex poly but brother number 1 is considered middle class. That is nonsense.

WAD · 09/09/2012 21:45

I'm not convinced that 'you can't be MC without a degree'.

ceeveebee · 09/09/2012 21:47

And what if you are middle class, but your DCs are not academic? Or are you saying all middle class people are automatically academic?
Are you sure you aren't confusing 'middle class' with 'intelligence'?

Obviously it is a generalisation but it is true in most cases that you need to be university educated with a decent degree to be classified as middle class going on the traditional indicators. Everyone now seems to define themselves as middle class, but that doesn't mean they are!

BonnieBumble · 09/09/2012 21:51

Are you middle class Scarlett?

scarlettsmummy2 · 09/09/2012 21:54

Yes, parents both uni educated, I went to private prep school and then went to a russell group uni. All my mums friends are traditional middle class, and they all have professional qualifications. It is the one thing they all have in common. Sorry if that offends.

GrendelsMum · 09/09/2012 21:58

Did anyone see Grayson's Perry's TV series about class in contemporary Britain as shown through design choices? I thought it was very revealing - definitely recognised myself there! (FWIW, I was the 'Leamington' variety of Middle Class).

BonnieBumble · 09/09/2012 22:00

I missed that Grendel. Will have to see if it is on iplayer.
