AIBU to think that if you live in a house that fronts straight on to the pavement, you shouldn't glare at people who walk past as though they were doing something massively rude (unless they are)?

I was walking at 2pm this Saturday afternoon with my dad, having a normal conversation (not loud or sweary or anything disruptive) and the number of people sat in their front rooms who stared and glared was astounding. They looked extremely pissed off too. I started to wonder if my clothes had fallen off or something! It must be hard to get anything done if you have to stop and glare at passers-by every 3 minutes.

How do you know they were glaring of you weren't looking in at them in their own homes?

admittedly if it bothers them, they should have blinds/voiles or something on the window.

MrsMangoBiscuit · 08/09/2012 21:53

Surely you must have been looking into the windows to see them? In that case they were probably annoyed at you looking in. Grin

squeakytoy · 08/09/2012 21:55

I am not sure how you managed to get up the road if your head was permanently sideways..

I lived in an area with lots of terraced house that opened onto the street, and was perfectly able to walk around without looking into their front rooms!

MrsTerrysChocolateOrange · 08/09/2012 21:56

You do know that if you could see them, there is every possibility they couldn't see you and were glaring at their hideous reflection in disgust.

Proudnscary · 08/09/2012 21:57

How utterly bizarre. Do you have a paranoid condition or are you the world's biggest staring-into-people's-front-rooms hypocrite?

BoysBoysBoysAndMe · 08/09/2012 21:57

What mango said

ajandjjmum · 08/09/2012 21:57

Stop staring in at people at they'll stop glaring!

Maybe the OP and her Dad are actually crabs?

SpamMarie · 08/09/2012 21:58

I wasn't looking in as I was talking to my dad, but some of them literally had their faces right up to the glass, and you can't help but notice that when you go by, especially when it's a sudden movement. I suppose the very narrow pavements don't help, you have to walk right next to the window to avoid the road.

My dad reckons it must be the sound of my weird accent that attracted them!

blimey, how loud is your voice???? Shock

SoftKittyWarmKitty · 08/09/2012 21:59

I live in a terrace that fronts directly onto the pavement and within a few days of moving in I'd put a blind in the window to stop people gawping in. If you have such a house it's natural to look up as someone noisy walks past your living room window. Just don't look in their windows you nosey mare Grin. Simple.

BoomerGold · 08/09/2012 21:59

It's their problem. They can get blinds or curtains if they don't like it, or move to a barn in the countryside.

Proudnscary · 08/09/2012 21:59

Were you in the red light district in Amsterdam?

WorraLiberty · 08/09/2012 22:00

but some of them literally had their faces right up to the glass

Perhaps they're overcrowded?

You know how small some lounges are and if they have a huge family....

AgentZigzag · 08/09/2012 22:00

If people don't put up nets it's my right to have a gleg at what their decor's like Smile

They were probably just looking with a relaxed face OP, it'd be more weird if they were sat there grinning at you, you'd have to wonder what they were up to Shock

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 08/09/2012 22:01

They are probably looking something other than pissed off. They sound lie they are just staring blankly out of the window.

Do you expect them to smile and wave at every passer by?

getmeoutofthismadhouse · 08/09/2012 22:01

If I lived in a house like this my dogs would be barking for the majority of the day . We live in a cul de sac and they bark at even a crisp packet blowing down the street so if it was someone walking past quite regularly , I would be the mad person at the window all day !

squeakytoy · 08/09/2012 22:01

You also get the prize for longest thread title I have ever seen too! lol!

AgentZigzag · 08/09/2012 22:02

I love it when I'm wearing my sunglasses because I can have a look without looking as though I am Grin

AgentZigzag · 08/09/2012 22:04

I was impressed with that too squeaky.

And I love MrsTerrys explanation Grin

Spons · 08/09/2012 22:15

I live in a house like that, and if I'm sat where I can see the window I can't help but look up as people pass. Having unfortunately caught site of my 'normal' facial expression in the reflection of my ipad the other day, i can see why people may think i might be annoyed!

I also gawp into other peoples houses so don't mind when people do it to me. (Apart from lady stood watching Paralympic swimming through the window which was a bit weird).

WorraLiberty · 08/09/2012 22:20

I think I'd feel a bit...I don't know...vulernable? if I lived in a house that didn't have a front garden.

We lost a fence panel from ours once and because we live on the corner, people were cutting through and across our drive.

It was weird seeing shadows/people passing the lounge window and the dog barked himself silly.

My house is directly on the pavement, and I look up if people walk past talking loudly.
If I look cross, that's just my face. Like this >>Hmm

As Outraged said, would be weird to wave and smile at everyone!

Sometimes people walk by too close and brush past my window (which makes a suprisingly loud noise) then I do look properly pissed off- because I am.
