to roll my eyes at cryptic Facebook updates

There's a family member on Facebook who is constantly updating her status with cryptic text. Examples include:

"Proper pissed off!"

"Really?"

"Emotional..."

"Is in a proper bad mood"

AIBU to roll my eyes at these statuses and think, "if you aren't going to tell us the complete deal, don't update at all".

Why do people update like this? Is it merely a case of being an attention whore?

Yup. Attention whore.

JaquelineHyde · 08/09/2012 14:32

Oh I love a good cryptic message! Most of all I like commenting on them trying to guess the situation, it mainly doesn't go down well Grin

I have been known to post a few cryptic ones myself, I am ashamed and shall flog myself until the guilt is gone.

BurntToastSmell · 08/09/2012 14:35

So is the whole point to invite people to show interest in your life? To make your life seem more interesting? Or simply to interact?

OP posts:
TheCountessOlenska · 08/09/2012 14:36

Followed by:

"What's up hun?"
"I'll inbox you hun"

CaptainHetty · 08/09/2012 14:37

It's worse when they get replies like 'what's wrong bbz?' then say... 'I'll pm you, don't wanna talk about it here'

Well don't display it publicly then, pillock Hmm

Leftwingharpie · 08/09/2012 14:44

Yes woe betide you if you ask what's up and don't mind your own business!

squeakytoy · 08/09/2012 14:45

Or the "you know who you are" bit... when half the time, the person they are aiming it at isnt even a friend of theirs on FB and is unlikely to see it! haha..

BurntToastSmell · 08/09/2012 14:45

Captain - EXACTLY. I just don't get it. Why not just pm the person you want to talk to privately? Unless you're insecure about approaching them with your issues, so by posting on Facebook, you get them to do the approaching?

It's called "Vaguebooking". Putting a purposefully vague statement up on Facebook that will lead to people asking you questions so you can feel like the centre of the universe.

perplexedpirate · 08/09/2012 14:47

I have just this minute had a 'well, looks I was right again. :-(' On an acquaintance's FB status.

Yeah, whatever, knobber. You'll be flouncing again next week. Hmm

honeytea · 08/09/2012 14:50

I hate these sort of status updates.

the one I dislike the most is the "exciting news tody!" sort, then someone says "what, pregnant? getting married? new job?" and this goes on for a while with different people asking. The original poster often comes up with something like "buying new shoes tomorrow." That isn't really exciting in my world.

SoupDragon · 08/09/2012 14:50

Easily solved: de-friend them

HairyGrotter · 08/09/2012 14:57

Urgh, hate it! I just ignore them, but they do give me an eyeroll!

The 'I'll inbox you hun' thing grinds my gears.

MardyArsedMidlander · 08/09/2012 14:59

My work colleague- who I can't stand- had as her status 'I want to speak my mind but if I do I'll be sectioned LOL so I'll just keep quiet!!!!!!'.

Or you could just fuck to the far side of off?

Yama · 08/09/2012 15:00

I love cryptic fb posts. It makes me realise that I am indeed self aware as I would never post such inane crap. Love it.

BurntToastSmell · 08/09/2012 15:01

Soup - awkward defriending a family member.

OP posts:
BurntToastSmell · 08/09/2012 15:01

Yama - what do you mean by self aware?

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 08/09/2012 15:02

Not really - they probably won't notice if they have 100s of friends. And if they do, lie act innocent. "Oh, I'm SO sorry - I pruned my friends list a while back and must have clicked on you by mistake!"

BleepingSooty · 08/09/2012 15:03

Just click 'like' and don't comment. Will really annoy them.

Yama · 08/09/2012 15:03

Self aware in that I know how others would see me if I posted such crap, ie as a twat. These people clearly have no clue.

JodieHarsh · 08/09/2012 15:11

How do you even KNOW people this infantile? DISCARD THEM I SAY. Or at the very least unsubscribe from their nonsense.

MrsDWho · 08/09/2012 15:16

Why is it awkward to delete family members? What is it they can do about it exactly?

Both myself and my sister both deleted our mother. She was doing our head in, and always air any grievances on Facebook which when she did it with me, was the final straw.

She knows we deleted her, and simply didn't just deactivate Facebook. There was naff all she could say or do about it. Both me and my sister still went on holiday last month with her and we generally get on. I just won't put up with her shite online as I am not one to air my dirty laundry in public.

I don't get why people get uptight if they are deleted off Facebook. Especially when it is family members. I text/call/email my family at least on a weekly basis, I don't need to have them on Facebook too and know every single thing of their lives.

MrsDWho · 08/09/2012 15:18

Or, if you really don't want to delete them, then you can always hide their statuses so you don't have to see them.

BurntToastSmell · 08/09/2012 15:22

Bleeping - LOVE that idea!

Yama - ahhh yes I see. Are they really so ignorant that they can't see what a fool they look?

MrsD - it's an inlaw, so I'm going to tolerate. I actually like her IRL, just not her Facebook style.

OP posts:
degutastic · 08/09/2012 15:26

I love posting pointless inane crap on facebook... Mind you, I'm not that subtle so no annoying vaguebooking from me Grin I also love liking people's attention seeking nonsense, it really winds them up Wink
