to roll my eyes at cryptic Facebook updates

There's a family member on Facebook who is constantly updating her status with cryptic text. Examples include:

"Proper pissed off!"

"Really?"

"Emotional..."

"Is in a proper bad mood"

AIBU to roll my eyes at these statuses and think, "if you aren't going to tell us the complete deal, don't update at all".

Why do people update like this? Is it merely a case of being an attention whore?

Used to have someone exactly like this on my friends list, was so glad when she defriended me. Perhaps i wasn't interactive enough!

TastesLikePanda · 10/09/2012 22:44

I ditched someone for this very reason recently. I doubt he cares much - but I cared even less for his passive agressive updates. I only accepted his friend request in the first place because he was fit and liked to pose with his shirt off knows my DH...

DeWe - love the idea. vaguebooking really gets my goat!

DisabilEightiesChick · 10/09/2012 22:51

Yes, thanks for giving us the proper term!

eslteacher · 10/09/2012 22:56

Yup, vaguebooking is the worst.

I especially hate statuses that angrily refer to "certain people" e.g. "I don't know why I bother having certain people in my life, I should know by now they're not worth it!!!!!!!!!!" (multiple exclamation marks compulsory)

Followed by lots of comments usually offering vague sympathy, usually using the world "hun".

waterlego6064 · 10/09/2012 23:05

YANBU.

I LOVE Bleeping and Dewe's suggestions. Looking forward to using those.

80sMum · 10/09/2012 23:26

I've often wondered why people refer to each other as"hun"on Facebook, but never use the term anywhere else. Also phrases such as "lovin' the new series of Dr Who. Me likeeee!" What's all that about?!

QuangleWangleQuee · 10/09/2012 23:31

I make a point of always ignoring cryptic messages as when people ask what they are about they never get a reply. I suppose the person is trying to seem interesting or mysterious or something? It doesn't work.

ErrorError · 11/09/2012 01:16

Agree with you all on vaguebooking... so irritating! Facebook was INVENTED for nosey parkers so it's a bit ridiculous when half-a-craic Sally comes on.

I have a particular friend who is a facebook trumper. When someone posts about something remotely interesting, they try to trump it with their own similar but better story. Another friend was a status thief until they got found out (because they had taken a photo of the same object as someone else they were fb friends with, and had written an identical caption for it. Her other friends who didn't know the official poster were congratulating status thief for being so witty and original!)

Another friend is a facebook nose rubbing spite master, e.g. someone gets their wallet nicked, she posts a photo of her new wallet. Some one breaks their foot, she posts a pic of her wearing her new skyscraper heels.

They're nice people in RL, fb makes folks go bonkers in the oddest ways! Hmm

StuntGirl · 11/09/2012 01:55

Haha, Error your friend sounds delightfully mental! I'd be tempted to post 'fake' updates to see what they prompt her into posting!

ErrorError · 11/09/2012 02:09

The one upping friend is a bit like that in RL too, so once in a clothes shop I started fawning over the most hideous top I could find, saying how gorgeous it was but it was faaar too expensive for me. A few days later I found out she actually bought it. Small victory!

idococktailshedoesbeer · 11/09/2012 12:59

Love the term vaguebooking.

A former colleague does this. She'd come into the office and every day there would be a post like:

Why does everything bad happen to me?
XXX is praying for things to turn round.
Why can't I have one piece of good fortune?
Does the world really hate me? I am a good person.
Yes, it's ok, feel free to walk over me.

Then her friends would jump in and say XXX, are you ok? She's reply yes hun, don't want to put it on here, I'll call you about it.

We'd all be sat there like Hmm. There was never anything seriously wrong, apart from a good dose of attention seeking.

My step sister is like this, annoys the fuck out of me. She's still on my friends list because its a daily reminder of what a prick she is, without the guilt from family for de-friending her.

Updates are:

Grrrr....

So pissed off....

Ouch in so much pain....

Classic cringe moment:

Yay I'm fertile! (When she find out she didn't have PCOS)

Now she's pregnant she has become even more of a moron. She has to update everything, and I mean everything.

She also argues with her DP publicly when they are at home together.
