In thinking we should all take a moment out of our day to marvel at the wonder that is.........the nitty gritty comb ??

Such a simple concept yet so marvellous, the damn thing has saved my sanity today.

Clocked a big fat beastie on dds hair this morning as she was going out the door.......cue dd being dragged back in and me searching through her head. Gave a cursory swipe with a crap plastic comb, got very few, dug out the master and OMFG she was riddled with the damn things.

How ? How can you be riddled with things crawling about your head and not itch ? She def hasn't been itching, i'm assuming she picked them up at end of term.

That humble comb with its nifty design saved my sanity today, swipe after swipe bore lice or eggs, I feel like writing a thank you letter to the lady inventors.

I'm also giving thanks to the inventor if the tangle tamer and those microwave bags for veg.

I thank you.

Apparantly only a third of people itch with headlice.

We have two Nitty-Grittys - I worship them!

YANBU, they are a wonder of the modern world.

SayersIsBetterThanGreggs · 06/09/2012 20:19

They're beautiful.

I now see them in a whole, new light.

Hear, hear! A true marvel of engineering, much undervalued.

FoofyShmooffer · 06/09/2012 20:25

I'm in.

Bought one this morning.
Used it tonight on the nit magnet DD and
BRILLIANT !!

All gone. I'm a convert. All hail Grin

FoofyShmooffer · 06/09/2012 20:27

MrsKoothrapalli - you have shattered my dreams.

He's mine when he gets fed up of you Grin

SayersIsBetterThanGreggs · 06/09/2012 20:28

I want a MN webchat thingy with the inventors, they should be on some sort of honour list I tells ye.

peeriePistoriuslicker · 06/09/2012 20:36

They are a godsend. I am on my third after losing two- I'm pretty sure one was accidentally binned and the other just vanished into thin air. DD1 keeps getting lice from a girl at school who is regularly crawling (whose mum works in the school and should know better FFS) and I am constantly thankful for the comb.

DontCallMeBaby · 06/09/2012 20:38

DD has never had nits but the Nitty Gritty is a damn fine device for checking for fleas on the cats.

quoteunquote · 06/09/2012 20:45

Having had children before and after the invention of the nitty gritty, I have to say it is really a life changing invention,

I personally think who ever invented it should be given real recognition for their services to family life, it truly is a brilliant bit of engineering, they deserve a title, far more than some that do get given honours,

How about MN nominate them for one?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 06/09/2012 20:45

They are brilliant Grin
And if you comb upwards from roots to ends it's amazing disgusting how many of the live eggs (dark brown not the empty white shells- they've already hatched and started rampaging on your DC head) you can detach.

Gross.

BreakOutTheKaraoke · 06/09/2012 20:45

Doesn't work on my DD (or me for that matter!). Just seems to pull her hair out at the roots. Plastic £1.50 comb from Boots and the odd go with Hedrin (free from prescription service at local pharmacy) works for us.

MissBetseyTrotwood · 06/09/2012 20:53

They pulled my DS' hair something rotten. They'd scream every time they saw the thing so I retreated to the standard Boots one. Must've been doing it wrong!

peeriePistoriuslicker · 06/09/2012 20:58

Lots of conditioner. DD1 is a right drama queeny screamer if her hair is pulled even a little, but we slap on lots of conditioner and she's fine with it.

1GreenBottleSittingOnTheWall · 06/09/2012 21:01

You really need to use conditioner on dry hair and then the nitty gritty if the comb is pulling out the hair!

CleoSmackYa · 06/09/2012 21:02

They are a Godsend! They don't seem to get all the bastards the beasties out though.

quoteunquote · 06/09/2012 21:02

use loads of conditioner, start with a large plastic extra wide tooth comb, to get the tats out, then use the nitty gritty, take a small section, start at the tips and slowly work your way up.

SayersIsBetterThanGreggs · 06/09/2012 21:05

Anyone struggling with it I will say it does struggle on scraggy ends, I resorted to the MN haircut on dd to neaten her hair ( she has v curly hair so the MN hair cut works well for her ) and away we went.

It flicked bloody beasties all over my trackie bottoms and dps tshirt loungewear tho so I had to get changed. Hmm

Yes, yes. I wholeheartedly agree they should be nominated for something they must save the country millions of hours and days off school each year.

SayersIsBetterThanGreggs · 06/09/2012 21:06

Also I dilute conditioner in a spray bottle and soak the head, they need lots of water and conditioner to get going imo.

WelshMaenad · 06/09/2012 21:13

We didn't get on with ours at all, I flung it across the room in disgust after it left dd screaming and sobbing and tufts of hair everywhere. She has really thick hair and it's long. Useless for us.

FarloWearsAGoldRibbon · 06/09/2012 21:23

Love it. As long as I don't let DD's hair get too far down the prongs towards the handle it doesn't pull much either.

ScariestFairyByFar · 06/09/2012 21:36

Just read on there website that there approved for nhs prescription does this mean there free? Grin

mummytofive · 06/09/2012 21:48

you can get them free from the g.p, yes. my friend did this just the other day, sadly i had already got one!

AnnaRack · 06/09/2012 21:51

Well I believed all the hype, paid £10 for it, but wasn't that impressed. The cheapo comb that came with the chemical stuff worked better. Maybe I'm doing it wrong? Will try combing tips to roots as an earlier poster suggested.

epeesarepointythings · 06/09/2012 22:24

I love the Nitty Gritty, but you do need to use it right - i.e, lashings of conditioner and very small sections of hair. Once you have all the tangles out, you can take larger sections, change direction etc. It's an art.

Combined with Hedrin for when you have the bugs, plus vinegar to loosen the eggs, it's magic.
