About this comment about learning difficulties?

I'm a member of a local neighbourhood forum and this came up last night in a thread:

"your neighbours (admittedly stretching from X street to Y street is tricky for someone from Australia who probably has learning difficulties) is the most important thing we can do with this site. 5 years in, >5000 members and we're stil not there."

The moderator has said it was just harmless banter between two friends on the site when I questioned this post.

I've been told I'm being overly PC.

Am I?

What are you talking about?

catwoo · 06/09/2012 10:05

eh?

TommeeTipsy · 06/09/2012 10:05

I don't want to link to the site itself. The conversation was about knowing your neighbours.

They are basically saying it's ok for one poster to make this remark as it is just banter between two people who are friends in real life.

It's a bit offensive, I agree!

I don't understand what they are meant to have said to each other?

crashdollGOLD · 06/09/2012 10:09

I don't understand either.

KenLeeeeeee · 06/09/2012 10:09

Eh?

VacantExpression · 06/09/2012 10:10

eh?

OneOfMyTurnsComingOn · 06/09/2012 10:10

Eh? I don't understand that sentence???

BlackberryIce · 06/09/2012 10:10

I read it as implying if you are from Australia then you must be a bit 'thick'...

catwoo · 06/09/2012 10:11

so have i got this right.somebody classed someone living on a different street as being a neighbour but this was because they were Australian and probably have learning difficulties ?

Moominsarescary · 06/09/2012 10:11

Are they implying that everyone from Australia has learning disabilities ? Is that what you mean?

TommeeTipsy · 06/09/2012 10:11

sorry folks, I wasn't very clear.

One bloke basically said he didn't like his neighbour because he drives to the local shops.

The other bloke then replied saying "your neighbours (admittedly stretching from X street to Y street is tricky for someone from Australia who probably has learning difficulties) is the most important thing we can do with this site. 5 years in, >5000 members and we're stil not there."

I just didn't like the way he casually said "someone from Australia who has learning difficulties". Their answer was it was just banter between friends.

Wtf? I wish I understood the question fully OP but I don't get it!

littlemisssunny · 06/09/2012 10:12

I don't get it either confused

littlemisssunny · 06/09/2012 10:14

What does stretching from street x to street y mean? I get that x and y are in place of the street name but what does the stretching bit mean?

VonHerrBurton · 06/09/2012 10:14

There's a huge difference between 'probably have learning difficulties' and 'have learning difficulties' - one is a flippant, rude comment, the other is not as it is factual.

SugarBatty · 06/09/2012 10:14

Does the australian neighbour have learning difficulties?
Did he say the bit you put in brackets? Did he do that rabbit ear thing with his hands? I'm baffled! Sorry.

Pagwatch · 06/09/2012 10:16

I think the op is a bit poked off that the insult in the comment is 'learning difficulties'.
It is crass, like the teenage relative who posted a picture of herself gurning with 'I am so special needs' underneath.

I wouldn't complain. I would quietly file under 'probably a twat'

FalseStartered · 06/09/2012 10:16

i don't get how you've come to the conclusion you're describing either, OP

and i'm a right cats bummed mouth whipcracker of the PC brigade quite up on intolerance

hazchem · 06/09/2012 10:19

I don't understand! But I am Australian Grin

TittyWhistles · 06/09/2012 10:20

This 'other bloke' has appalling grammar. "Your neighbours IS"?

That bothered me more than anything else in that statement tbh.

Still not where??

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 06/09/2012 10:21

Meh!

MyLastDuchess · 06/09/2012 10:21

Hahaha Hazchem me too!

I guess it's being rude about Australians but more to the point, quite offensive by using 'probably has learning difficulties' as an insult.
