At Getting Fed Up at Being Constantly Told I'm Past It?

I'm 37. In the past few weeks, I've been reminded, variously, that I'm getting on a bit, I'm no longer young, I will be slowing down, I won't be able to do the things I used to, theres no point in me going to the gym because I'm not going to make the Olympics at my age, I should give up doing up my older house and buy a new build, because at my age, I don't want to be doing stuff like that, I'm too old to have children now at my age (not that I expressed a desire to), it was just suddenly mentioned out of the blue in a conversation. And so on.

I don't feel any different at all!

I was 36 last week. But i have quite a few colleagues aged over 50, or even 60! Old enough to be my parents technically; but OMG do they know how to go out & enjoy life!!

You are not old at 37!! or even middle aged officially.
Do avoid reading any magazines or newspaper articles that discuss ageing - there are some really bitchy 'journalists' around who i'm sure enjoy making other women feel shite.
& don't discuss age with any prematurely middle aged friends. One of my best mates is lovely but she's thought of herself as middle aged since she was about 26!! I'm trying to get her out of thinking that way but it's hard!

Find friends & acquaintances, both female & male, of all ages, who are lively, happy, funny people.
Make a list of new things you want to learn about; & experiences you want to enjoy; then start doing them!

Update your hair, clothes & make up.

(Ps i went to the Benefit Counter for advice. The saleswoman (age 40s approx) talked to me like i was about 16, not 36... i did feel patronised but i definitely didn't feel old after that! & the make up advice was good.)

Also get to know a few 80 - 95 year olds. Then you'll feel young! :)

Latara · 04/09/2012 15:49

Actually it is difficult going to my gym at age 36... especially in the mornings.

Because each piece of equipment is take up with a lively, annoyingly fit looking pensioner :)

Latara · 04/09/2012 15:52

Oh yes & did you know that you have ''only'' another 37 years to go now until you are retirement age?? Thanks to the government :(

MrsHelsBels74 · 04/09/2012 15:53

And as an aside, 4 years ago my mum in her 60s bought a dilapidated house in the middle of France which she is doing most of the work on herself (she's just finished cladding the inside of the roof despite now being 68!)

KellyElly · 04/09/2012 16:02

How odd. You aren't an old age pensioner!?

perplexedpirate · 04/09/2012 16:02

Rubbish. My mother is 63 and has just started her own business.
She also took up dancing last year and now dances regularly 5 nights a week.
She puts me to shame.

Latara · 04/09/2012 16:07

My Mum is 63. All her colleagues are older. She is annoyingly much fitter & slimmer than me; & men fancy her because she's blonde & very pretty.

My nan is 87. She has a new 'man friend' who buys her flowers & other presents. Even though she's got a zimmer frame.

There's hope for me yet.... Grin

37 is not old at all! I wouldn't even consider you middle aged really (I think of middle aged as starting in mid-late 40s, kind of depending on how the person is). I don't think 37 is too old for any of the things mentioned in the OP and I would find it perfectly normal for someone your age to go to the gym, being doing up a house, have a baby etc. I'm 26 FWIW.

HolofernesesHead · 04/09/2012 18:19

That's just mad. 37 is nowhere near old. My parents are in their late 60s and they don't act or look remotely old. Be happy to be you! :)

CaliforniaLeaving · 04/09/2012 21:59

What bunch of nasty fuckers! Tell them to shut it, they don't have a clue.
I'm 50 and have a 7 year old, and I exercise and do yoga and can keep up those young 'uns Hmm they are jealous.

smellyolddog · 04/09/2012 22:11

I'm delighted to be 37!!

I spent all of last year thinking I was already 37 expecting to have my 38th birthday, it was lovely to gain a year.

I've just taken up running signed up for a 10 mile run, I've yet to buy a house, travel to australia for 3 months and numerous other travels that I have on my list, and life is good.

boaty · 04/09/2012 22:25

Tell them to go forth!!!
37 is not even half way up the hill let alone over it!! I'm 45 and play football joined a team last year , cycle and run well sort of I intend to enjoy my mid life crisis and grow older disgracefully! Grow up...???? Never!! Grin

BCBG · 04/09/2012 22:29

Im 51 Blush, have a ten year old (amongst others Grin), and Im halfway through a demanding Masters. Tell them to fuck off.

CoolaSchmoola · 04/09/2012 22:29

How bizarre!

I'm 34 and I still feel 18.... don't look it though lol! The thought that in 3 years people may say things like that to me is scary.

You're not old!!

geegee888 · 04/09/2012 22:31

Quite relieved to hear all the active and adventurous 37 plussers out there! Maybe its where I live or something...so many of the women I know my age seem to do nothing much.

MadameDefarge · 04/09/2012 22:41

I want a nice bedjacket.

BrainSurgeon · 04/09/2012 22:46

Agree with everyone else, that's a load of bolleaux Grin
I had my DS at 36 and got promoted to a manager role at 38, am now considering going to love abroad with DP - it's all very exciting Smile
The only person who ever commented on my age was a weird relative who asked me, after I gave birth to DS, "how does it feel to be an older mum?". Twat Angry

BrainSurgeon · 04/09/2012 22:47

Ha ha that should be live abroad not love Blush

geegee888 · 04/09/2012 22:48

Yes, well that certainly does sound exciting, Brain...!

37?? You're a spring chicken :)
Fret not, people are just bloody irritating!

RuleBritannia · 05/09/2012 09:59

Oh, and I forgot to mention it ... I took up hang gliding at 52.

redpanda13 · 05/09/2012 10:19

At 37 I could still get a half fare on the bus!
Then I had a child and it all went downhill. Now at 44 I am doing a second degree, I go to the gym and I am horseriding again. That was a bit more painful at first than when I was a teenager. I share a horse at the moment but when I finish my course I will fufill my childhood dream and actually buy a horse of my own.
I fancy a bit of kitesurfing too!

MrsHelsBels74 · 05/09/2012 10:41

And my dad & stepmum are both 70 this year & are contemplating a trip down the amazon next year!

RubyVaultingGates · 05/09/2012 10:48

I'm 47 tomorrow... I have a three year old a crazy job and I'm just getting going!
I'd thump anyone who said that to me. You need to do the same!
