I feel bad as otherwise they are great neighbours, but the woman next door does two loads of washing a day, 7 days a week: 7.30 and 5.30 so every morning, getting ready to the noise of it spinning in the bedroom & bathroom & then shaking kitchen/earsplitting noise in the lounge (open plan) while i grab breakkie - & every night i come in to the same.... And no weekend lie ins either . It's a bit grim after a long commute tbh. She used to run it every night at 10pm on top of that: til the neighbours above her complained so she has cut it down to twice a day already .. She is at home all day, 2 kids in school ... Would some cup cakes w. a really polite note (that includes me saying plse tell me if i ever disturb you too) be out of the question ? I only run my machine Sat afternoons by way when everyone is out as conscious walls so thin ..& weirdly tho its in my flat, its way, way quieter - so how does that work/don't understand ?!

I think I'd go knock on her door and ask her over for tea/coffee while she is doing the washing.
Then bring it up, and ask if there was any way she could put the wash on while you were still at work? Serve cupcakes!

If she can't come for tea/coffee at that time, ask if she has just a minute to spare, as you would like her to hear something in your apt.

I was very traumatised by what happened after i had a combi boiler installed. The noise with clanking empty old pipes that had been used for the gravity system when washing machine turned off the water entering machine. I was in shock, especially in the bathroom, the noise was terrifying. I have got used to it now, but do not put washing machine on when I have my afternoon kip - live in bungalow and bedroom opposite bathroom

ps and bathroom at back of kitchen !!!

I think YABU but then Im biased. I live in a flat and have the fussiest and rudest neighbour below me. Whenever I have the hoover out, the washing machine on, music on, TV on, shower running etc he slips narky notes under the door and then must run away as Ive ran out after him a few times and hes gone. Wont talk to me face to face but according to his notes, feels that I am inconsiderate and should make less noise. DD walking resulted in issues aswell. He insists that she "thuds". Shes 17mo FFS!

Hes in his 50s, single, no DC so I think its just a lack of understanding that a home with DC is a different entity - noisy, laughter filled (yes he's complained about laughing), people talking and getting on with chores etc. When ex was still here he dared to complain that we had sex too noisily. I did confront him on that score as DD was 2 days old and the sounds he'd been hearing were creaking from me getting in and out of bed every 30 mins to tend to jaundiced newborn Angry

Blush sorry for rant OP

catwoo · 09/09/2012 22:43

Why can't she run it at 7.30.You are not asleep?

kittyandthegoldenfontanelles · 09/09/2012 23:25

I believe the house shakes, catwoo. It has been mentioned upthread.

Invite her round while the house is shaking, eat cupcakes together, discuss.

helenlynn · 09/09/2012 23:29

If that were me with the excessively noisy washing machine I'd really rather my neighbour mentioned it nicely to me instead of carrying on being annoyed by it twice a day every day. Especially if she mentioned it with fairy cakes. Of course the OP should be prepared to be told that nothing can easily be done about the times or the noisiness, but she comes across as pleasant and normal enough to take an honest reply with good grace.

catwoo · 10/09/2012 09:32

isn'r it going to shake whatever time she runs it? So basically are you wanting to tell her she can only run her washing machine when you are out!!!
YABU and I would be more worried about why my house was shaking tbh!Do you live in flats?

kittyandthegoldenfontanelles · 10/09/2012 09:57

Yes flats. Sorry, it was me who said house.

AnnaRack · 10/09/2012 10:51

Sounds like the bearings might have gone on her machine, it shouldn't be making that much noise. It will probably break down soon. Has it been doing this for a long time?

MrsRobertDuvallHasRosacea · 10/09/2012 10:52

I normally put a wash on at 6.30 in the morning, but then we don't live in aflat.
Sounds as if her washing machine needs a bit of attention..new drum perhaps?

I did 7 washes yesterday Grin

OhTheConfusion · 10/09/2012 11:02

I wash at these times too Blush but I don't live in a flat so it is definately not me :-)

7.30am load is the towels (from night before and morning), tea towels from last nights dishes, pj's and underwear.

5.30pm is school uniforms, work wear and any leisure wear from the day before.

I save all the bedding for a weekend.

If my neighbours approached me I would appologise and look into the noise but I would not be able to change my washing times as I don't have a tumble dryer and need the drying time this routine allows.
