I feel bad as otherwise they are great neighbours, but the woman next door does two loads of washing a day, 7 days a week: 7.30 and 5.30 so every morning, getting ready to the noise of it spinning in the bedroom & bathroom & then shaking kitchen/earsplitting noise in the lounge (open plan) while i grab breakkie - & every night i come in to the same.... And no weekend lie ins either . It's a bit grim after a long commute tbh. She used to run it every night at 10pm on top of that: til the neighbours above her complained so she has cut it down to twice a day already .. She is at home all day, 2 kids in school ... Would some cup cakes w. a really polite note (that includes me saying plse tell me if i ever disturb you too) be out of the question ? I only run my machine Sat afternoons by way when everyone is out as conscious walls so thin ..& weirdly tho its in my flat, its way, way quieter - so how does that work/don't understand ?!

YABU. Those are reasonable times. You live in flats, it's inevitable there will be neighbour noise.

As to your machine being quieter, that's just a difference in the machines, not strange at all.

oldraver · 03/09/2012 12:49

So it isnt waking you up just disturbing you while eating breakfast ?

She will think you a loon if you ask her to do it later

ThePigOnTheWall · 03/09/2012 12:49

Redlac fancy your neighbour wanting to put her washing out on a sunny afternoon eh? Wink

I think YABU but I would be pissed off as hell too OP so I can sympathise

GoldPlatedNineDoors · 03/09/2012 12:50

Just because she is "at home all day" doesnt mean she is actually at home....she may want to do a load before school runs and going out for the day with her dcs.

She may only ever be in the house the same time as you.

Her husband (or another neighbour who she is aware of) may wrk nights so these hours are suitable to most.

Yabu.

dazzledsazzle · 03/09/2012 12:50

PS, each load lasts 90mins .. kitchen & lounge shake/vibrate throughout as do all pictures on walls in every room inc. bedroom. In bedroom noise is even w. 2 doors shut between bedroom and the wall the machine backs onto . When it spins, its like a roar as it starts and finishes and it sounds like the machine is rattling agains the wall on top of that ??

Time wise I don't think you can complain, however noise wise...

I am in a terraced house, I have NEVER heard either side's washing machine.

My sister is in an apartment, she has never heard a neighbour's machine (we were discussing noise in general it the other day as we heard next door's little baby when she had her window open).

Years ago when I got my first washing machine I didn't realise you had to take out the bolts so that the vibrations from the machine were absorbed by the blocks. Cue very very loud first wash and machine travelling all over the kitchen!

I wonder if that's the issue with her machine? Perhaps you could call over and say "I always hear your machine, are you having a problem with it, maybe I/DH/DP could have a look for you?"

I wouldn't go with the note, I'd do it in person.

HeadfirstOverTheHighJump · 03/09/2012 12:51

YABU, those are acceptable times.

Nancy66 · 03/09/2012 12:51

maybe just ask her to delay the morning wash on a weekend.

If she's a nice woman and you get on I can't see a problem.

redlac · 03/09/2012 12:52

I know Pig the cheek of her! Especially since we've had very few sunny days up here and the lack of burnt sausage and burgers was affecting my tastebuds :)

TBH I'm just jealous as she gets the sun in her back garden all day up til about 9pm and I just get it streaming in the front of our house so we have to close the curtains at 4pm :)

Actually x posted with your last post dazzled - for there to be that amt of noise there MUST be something out of the ordinary going on with that machine.

thestringcheesemassacre · 03/09/2012 12:53

yes I think those times are perfectly reasonable. Sorry. YABU.

You could maybe ask her to check balance in machine, the noise seems extreme.

ThePigOnTheWall · 03/09/2012 12:55

I do agree that 7:30 is too early on a weekend.

Plus, what the hell is she washing to do 14 loads a week?

dazzledsazzle · 03/09/2012 12:55

Odraver - its serioulsy like point 5 on the earthquake scale, the pictures on the wall rattle, kitchen and lounge shake/vibrate and i tried to mask it with TV but don't like to have it over vol 5 in case i disturb above and below ...

Times are OK, but your flat shouldn't be shaking. Ask her to come down and hear how load it sounds - maybe there's something wrong with it? Or is it sitting on bare boards?

HeadfirstOverTheHighJump · 03/09/2012 12:55

After your last post the noise does seem extreme, she could do with reducing that somehow. (the balance thing other posters are mentioning?). I still think the times are okay though.

Ephiny · 03/09/2012 12:56

It does sound like it's very loud actually, if you can hear it so clearly next door. We live in a terraced house and don't hear our neighbour's washing machine.

imonthefone · 03/09/2012 12:59

i used to live in a flat and the woman below used to complain about us going to the toilet in the night Hmm-said she could hear us walking across the floor!

she used to complain about our wild parties-strangely, they often coincideded with dates we were away for the weekend! Mad Bat!

notimetotidy · 03/09/2012 12:59

How can a family of 3 (or 4) create 14 loads of washing a week! She must have her washing colour coded or something - mad woman!

MumOfTwoCats · 03/09/2012 12:59

Invite her round for a friendly drink at 6pm one night. She'll definitely comment on the loud noise and you can tell her its her machine!

imonthefone · 03/09/2012 12:59

sorry-completely unhelpful/irrelevant anecdote from my life Blush

susitwoshoes · 03/09/2012 13:00

I'm going to stick my neck out and say YANBU. If her washing machine is making that much racket and you're in flats then it's very unreasonable. When we had an older noisy machine I would never have it on before 9, and did all the washing at the weekend. Now we have a new one I do sometimes put it on earlier. And I absolutely fail to understand how anyone can generate 14 loads of washing every week. We are a family of 3 and I do 3 loads a week, so even if she's a family of 6 I can't understand it. And it's waaay too early at the weekend. I would have a word, maybe ask her round to witness how much noise it's making? Sometimes, unless you can see or hear things for yourself, it can be very difficult to realize how disturbing your everyday activities are to those around you.

imonthefone · 03/09/2012 13:00

maybe she does washing for other people...

Indith · 03/09/2012 13:01

If she did it during the day- 1) she could be out (school runs? Shopping?) and you are not supposed to go out while machines are on. Especailly in flats as if it floods or goes up in flames then it has rather bad consequences for neighbours not just the flat the machine is in. 2) it would be someone else complaining who is in during the day or who works nights or something.

Realistically she has chosen times when almost everyone in the building will be awake and having a meal/shower/doing osme sort of activity.

If her machine is that loud and rattly though I agree there is somethign not quite right with it that perhaps needs checking as not even ancient machines are as loud as you describe.

dazzledsazzle · 03/09/2012 13:02

Thx all - the times i could live w. very easily : if the whole of my flat wasn't shaking and vibrating for 90mins twice a day , 7 days a week. She is a nice woman so i will go round (w. cupcakes ... ) . I
