or aibu? 2 weeks ago complained to police on 101 number about all night rave up at neighbours. they said theyd 'make a note of it' but didnt send anyone. last night 4 drunk yobs outside falling against someones car, throwing beer cans, shouting, (yet it seems Im the only 1 in street with ears , btw) and then the disgusting exposure of one of them as they peed in my driveway...not theirs, mine. i shouted 'oy' out the window to no avail. this is after midnight btw. phone police again, and they said same thing. so said id call 999 and they said no cos its not an emergency. desecrating my property, indecent exposure and damaging someones car isn't a crime? same with env health. is it me or does anyone else if and when they call these people it falls on deaf ears?

Until recently I lived in a town centre next to a 'boy racer' meeting point. Called the police a couple of times a month when it got noisy or rowdy and they were brilliant.

They attended all but 1 time when they were really busy but spoke to cctv operator who promised to keep watch. We saw all the cameras turning to watch them and they left.

So, in my area at least there is definately a point to them.

TyrannoWearsGoldKnickers · 02/09/2012 19:41

It wasn't an emergency. An emergency means someone's life is in danger. You don't threaten to call 999 just because you don't get the response you'd like.

EldritchCleavage · 02/09/2012 19:44

I'm pretty taken aback that you regard peeing in your driveway (which is horrible) as worthy of a 999 call. It really isn't. They might come out for a report of a group of drunken people being anti-social on their way home, but it could hardly be made a priority.

thunderbird5 · 02/09/2012 19:45

I know the police tend to target town centres etc but they dont seem to bother with non-town centres. and I have a camera outside front door. unfortunately its a dummy 1 but i might confront neighbour (for it is he) and say he's been filmed!!!thing is its a bunch of guys next door (the yobs) and none of them seem to speak or understand a word of english. mind you, my body language should say it all! thing is too they know im on my own with a disabled child and they harrass us. and again, police never do anything about it, nor do social services etc.

and I threatened to call 999 1-cos 101 wouldnt take it seriously and 2-my dc is autistic and all the noise etc wakes them up and traumatises them. if anyones ever heard a child screaming in mental anguish and its your child then for me thats an emergency as that can lead to a seizure. i wouldnt call an emergency number otherwise.

thunderbird its not just emergencies the police deal with much wider service what do you suggest to replace these fantastic men and women doing a thankless job

lovebunny · 02/09/2012 19:52

police don't care about wee. fact.

but

write down all you can remember, and from now, keep a log of what they do. don't antagonise the neighbours too much but don't seem weak either - 'oy!' seems about fine. call the community police officer, ask him/her round and explain the situation.

people who are vulnerable (single mothers, people with disabilities) are often picked on and the police should be conscious of that. make them aware. and put the details in writing to ss, too, so that they can't pretend they don't know.

you should be getting support, and you aren't.

BlackberryIce · 02/09/2012 19:54

It's still not worthy of 999!! These devices are being cut to the bone as it is!

GrendelsMum · 02/09/2012 19:55

I thought this was going to be an interesting wider philosophical point about the role of government in society.

BlackberryIce · 02/09/2012 19:55

Are any if these people in housing assiciation properties?

dottyspotty2 · 02/09/2012 19:57

If this is a regular occurance try contacting your anti-social behaviour unit if you have one

squeakytoy · 02/09/2012 19:58

a drunk having a piss on your drive is not really "indecent exposure", falling against a car does not necessarily damage it, and whilst I agree that being woken up in the early hours like that is not great, it is hardly worthy of a call to the police, who have real problems to deal with.

topknob · 02/09/2012 20:01

OP you are getting far too wound up about this, just ignore it and they will go home.
I am wondering why you are the only person who has 'ears' as you say. Maybe everyone else doesn't really care.

I was proper laughing at the neighbour who called the police recently here when some young lads at 1.00am in the morning went through the roads knocking over bins ! We just went out and cleared ours up..things happen due to stupid people but 999, you would be worthy of the bollocking you would recieve for that.

im the only 1 in street with a severely mentally disabled child therefore noise etc affects us more. 1 neighbour was saying once that they used to complain but nothing was ever done so they gave up. i think some of you have taken original op out of context. i KNOW there are real emergencies, but when youre just a woman and child in a house it makes you very very very vulnerable and we had to move house once cos of harrassment. i didnt just say about peeing, there was more stuff. anyway thanx to those who gave good advice. must just be area i live in then that police dont seem to be available. btw i have a family member and a friend in the force in a different county and they seem to do a good job. im just wondering about my particular area and if anyone else had any similar experiences?

I have to say I called 101 recently and they absolutely couldn't have been nicer, or more helpful and my issue was resolved more or less straight away, the community police officer also came out as a follow up and as I decided eventually (thanks to advice on AIBU) to have someone charged with an offence they have given me a direct number to call if there is any more trouble. I do think a lot of times the police force come in for some unnecessary stick.

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 02/09/2012 20:18

What would you want police to do? This sounds more like a neighbour dispute than a police matter. Does he own the home or is it rented? If rented I think it's his landlord you need to contact.

gallicgirl · 02/09/2012 20:21

Have you tried speaking to the private sector housing section at your local council? They can sometimes mediate or contact the landlord if the house is rented.

FrillyMilly · 02/09/2012 20:22

The police don't care about nuisance neighbours. I suffered for two years before giving up and moving away. Yes it's wrong to threaten to ring 999 but awful neighbours push you to the edge. We complained to environmental health so many times, kept diaries, they sent letters, recorded it and eventually obtained an abatement order. Made no difference and they had to witness the nuisance a certain number of times and warn them before taking them to court for breach of order. By that point I'd had enough. There should be more to protect people against problem neighbours. You have my sympathy.

WhatYouLookingAt · 02/09/2012 20:23

I'm hoping "is there any point in a police force" isn't a real question. Because its exceedingly inane if it is.

thunderbird5 · 02/09/2012 20:24

ok. obviously wrote title of thread the wrong way and in frustrated tired anger. this is an ongoing issue and im seeing ss next week anyway. obv didnt pick my words wisely. might be better to knock this on the head now.thanx.

Neighbour noise is a civil matter, not a criminal one. You want them patrolling parties keeping music levels down when their are actual crimes happening? Hmm
