To hate being *bolded* in a thread

It looks like someone has a Pince nez on and is scrutinizing.

I also suggest fewer threads would go tits up if people had to read them properly LOOKING for their name.

See? See? It's enticing to bold your name bonny!

Nanny0gg · 02/09/2012 18:41

AS there is no 'reply to' button on here (thank the Lord), it's the easiest way of showing who you're responding to.

And I quite like it.

(This is a general comment which is why I haven't emboldened the OP's name.

OatyBeatie · 02/09/2012 18:47

I hate bolded names, too. It feels a bit "Hey, you." Or like being summoned to wait outside the headteachers office. It is quite a new thing. It crept in a year or two ago I think.

PippasArse · 02/09/2012 18:51

its not shouted or being summoned, its so the person knows you're talking to them

LynetteScavo · 02/09/2012 18:54

Well I like it. It makes me feel extra speshul.

LynetteScavo

There, I'm feeling more important already.

Really BonnyDay? I get a little trill when someone bolds my name!

Tee2072 · 02/09/2012 19:44

"It is quite a new thing. It crept in a year or two ago I think."

Well, I've been here nearly 4 years and I've seen it that whole time. So I wouldn't call that new.

Even if it was only 2 years, that's hardly new, is it?

JamieandOscarSittinginATree · 02/09/2012 19:48

I like it. It helps me see who is being addressed.

JamieandOscarSittinginATree · 02/09/2012 19:49

OP

I can read too, but with such fast moving threads it's easy to cross-post and then it's not clear who the post is aimed at.

Startailoforangeandgold · 02/09/2012 19:59

I thought it was polite, sort of the opposite of talking behind someone's back.

If you say something nice or not nice directed at a particular poster they have the right of reply.

And yes it's a pig to do on an iPod.

SauvignonBlanche · 02/09/2012 20:04

You joined today, Bonny and you're bloody moaning already?
Welcome to MN! Grin

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 02/09/2012 20:04

Being bolded makes me feel all warm inside, 'cos someone has read what I said and wants me to know that the reply is for me. Otherwise, how would I know. ((((())))?

ShellyBoobs · 02/09/2012 20:33

How else are people supposed to signify who they're repsonding to?

Some MNers have names which are neither capitalised, nor anything like a 'proper' name.

So if you want to say, "I agree with you", to someone called 'justhadmyfirstbaby' (assuming that's not a real MNer already Grin), how would you attach their name to it?

I would write: I agree with you, just. Making it obvious what I'm saying and to whom.

If I wrote: I agree with you, just. It sounds like agreeing with some random poster but only just agreeing with them.

What's the big issue with bolding names?

TalcAndTurnips · 02/09/2012 20:50

Shelley (

cardibach · 02/09/2012 21:01

YABU
I like a bit of bolding
Makes everything clear, and I can see whether people are ignoring me or not.

DizzyKipper · 02/09/2012 21:38

I like bolding too. I like when other people do it, I like when I do it, I just like it in general. I agree with Talc, Shelley gave a brilliant answer Grin. fwiw, not all of us have the time or inclination to read through a thread of 14 or so pages anyway.

FairLadyRantALot · 02/09/2012 21:41

what is a Pince Nez?
Obviously I am not very educated, lol...

TiggyD · 02/09/2012 22:09

How about emboldening random words throughout your post, many of which are just put in fishcakes to confuse people?

TalcAndTurnips · 02/09/2012 22:10

FairLady - pince nez are spectacles that stay on your face purely by clinging to one's nose.

They are good for peering at people through, when you feel a bit disapproving.

TiggyD · 02/09/2012 22:10

And when was the last time you saw anybody underline something?

MammaTJisWearingGold · 02/09/2012 22:12

I have had a look at a thread tonight with a lot of bolded names, It was great, I got pointed back to relevant posts
