I don't know if this is a u.k wide thing but here in Glasgow so many people call a baby's dummy a tit or titty. It sounds vile .I used to hate it when my little ones had dummies and some old man would bend over the Pram and say " awww baby are you sucking your tit"?

PumpkinPositive · 31/08/2012 22:52

My parents had a holiday flat in Spain when I was wee. One night mammy went out "gallivanting" all night leaving me in the tender care of daddy and my vast array of dummies (one of which had the figure of a chickens head on top).

Waking up in the night and finding myself dummy-less, I apparently started screaming for my "pollo chupete" (chicken dummy) and my father, not speaking the lingo, had to endure an entire night, or so he tells it, filled with relentless Poltorgeist style wailing and shrieking for "POLLO CHUPETE POLLO CHUPETE POLLO CHUPETE" until mumsy returned the next morning and enlightened him. My mum (Irish) used to call bottle teats 'tits' and would follow me around Boots cos l was trying desperately to run away as l knew what was coming shouting 'Sudaname are you wanting any tits while we're here'.

I had no idea how to spell doup and just went for what looked phonetically right. Doric seems to be about guessing for me.

apostropheuse · 31/08/2012 23:00

JennyPiccolo · 31/08/2012 23:13

I CAN CONFIRM Glickmans sweetie shop on London rd has lucky tatties. They are also available at Mrs Mitchell's sweetie shop on trongate, as are tiny tatties, soor plooms ( for the making of soor ploom vodka), irn bru bars, creamola foam and all the rest.

iheartmycat · 31/08/2012 23:13

I've always known it as a dummy tit....and called titty's by grannies.

JollyHockeySticks - would your dad come from a place that shares a name with a cheap fortified wine drunk by neds by any chance?! :)

For some reason, we always sang the jelly, jelly, like....HITLER's belly (and other body parts at guides....no idea why!! And the clappa handies rhyme went

Clappa clappa handies
Daddy's coming home
with pennies in his pockets
for (Iheartmycat) alone

My fave remains :
Oh you canny chuck pieces out a 20 storey flat
30 thousnd hungry weans will testify tae that
If the peice be cheese or jelly
if the bread be plain or pan
the chances ae it reaching earth
and 99 tae wan!!

jaggythistle · 31/08/2012 23:13
