To want to throttle DH when he says this?

BenedictsCumberbitch · 30/08/2012 19:42

and he's got the kids doing it too!

Tonight I picked DH up from the train, he got in the car, wrinkled his nose and said 'it stinks in here' with a vague air of disgust. I ask what kind of 'stink' thinking it might be bum toddler with potent nappies my breath as I had garlic in my lunch or some other vile smell, surreptitiously I sniffed myself for evidence of BO etc. He leans over and sniffs my hair and says 'did you wash your hair just before?' um 'yep' he nods 'yeah that's it'.

Stinks?? Of shampoo and conditioner and nice freshness? Stinks?? Could he not say that he can smell something nice/fresh/clean?

He does it when I have washing in the tumble dryer or on the radiator etc 'the house stinks' giving me the fear that there is something under the floorboards. When I probe further it's the smell of clean washing/air freshener he objects to.

DD is the same, hand her clean clothes 'Urgh mam they stink' I give them a sniff 'of clean washing??'.

Do their noses not work like mine???

There are weird genetic things. I hate coriander and it turns out that it is genetic. Some people taste/smell it differently.

YABU for having reproduced with weird smelling mutant man.

MrsKeithRichards · 30/08/2012 19:44

Yanbu!

Stink = something bad.

Hopeforever · 30/08/2012 19:44

Sorry but he could have a point, too much artificial scent such as fabric conditioner and air fresher stink to me too :(

surely what smells nice is a matter if opinion.
I love vanilla, it makes dh want to vomit.

cozietoesie · 30/08/2012 19:46

I find the smell of coriander plants to be one of the worst in existence. I handled a plant with unripe berries once and was physically ill for hours. Even remembering the smell in a half sort of way is enough to make me feel queasy. Interested to hear that it's genetic.

EarnestDullard · 30/08/2012 19:48

I see what you mean OP, but even a 'nice' smell can be unpleasant if it's very strong.

PedallingSquares · 30/08/2012 19:48

I'm with your family. These artificial/processed cleaning products do stink

And air fresheners are the work of the devil. They are almost always 10 times worse than whatever they are supposed to mask. Grin

MrsTerryPratchett · 30/08/2012 19:50

Here is an article. I was glad to hear it was genetic because I love fancy food and everyone thought I was a right ignoramus for hating coriander. I'm just special.

MrsTerryPratchett · 30/08/2012 19:50

Oh, and Febreeze is so there.

mynewpassion · 30/08/2012 19:52

I hate the smell of air fresheners. They stink something awful. I like unscented dryer sheets and shampoos, too. Perfumes bother me also.

peeriebear · 30/08/2012 19:52

I too was amazed that I seem to be the only person who loathes coriander. Like rubbing cheap washing up liquid in your eyes, nose and mouth at the same time

PedanticPanda · 30/08/2012 19:55

My ds does this too if a smell is too strong for him, even nice smells.

Fiveflowers · 30/08/2012 19:56

Interesting MrsTP. I love coriander but DD & DS hate it with a passion and can detect the tiniest quantity of it in a dish.

Katisha · 30/08/2012 19:57

As a non-fabric conditioner user, it's really noticeable on other people's clothes and yes, would class it as a stink.

cerealqueen · 30/08/2012 20:00

Some strong laundry stuff or febreeze does stink, IMHO.

SoDesperate · 30/08/2012 20:07

hhhmmm try garlic bread for supper for a few evenings :) I wonder what he would say to that?

JoshLyman · 30/08/2012 20:15

My ex hated having clean sheets on the bed. He preferred the smell of them when they were a week old. What a weirdo.

BenedictsCumberbitch · 30/08/2012 20:24

But but but it smells clean! I mean freshly washed hair doesn't stink does it? I would only use the word stink to denote foul smelling. I can appreciate that not everyone likes the same smells but it just makes me so bloody paranoid!

Your shampoo might have a fragrance that is pungent to his sense of smell.

susitwoshoes · 30/08/2012 20:33

it doesn't smell clean, though, it smells of what you've used on it which may well, to others, be pretty overpowering. And air freshener is rank. I'm guessing, if you use air freshener, that your tolerance to artificial smells may be higher than your family's! I actually couldn't live in a house where air freshener was used, not only does it smell vile, it makes my airways close up. Grim grim grim. Open a window!

discrete · 30/08/2012 20:37

Try switching to scent-free shampoo and conditioner, ditto laundry products.

I'm with your family, I'm afraid.

mynewpassion · 30/08/2012 20:41

Does he use the same shampoo? If he does, he's bu.

I really dislike strong flowery 'clean' smells. Perfumes, hair products or washing condition. Some are lovely, but a lot are a bit much.

Still, the cheek! No need for the face, or words!
