Just that really. His spots first appeared about 3 days ago and have not all blistered over yet. He is perfectly well in himself but getting bored and fed up having stayed in for 2 days.

You've got to do the right thing. Entertain him in the house.
My two have had it in the last month, two weeks with the eldest then two weeks with the younger child soi we've been in the house for a month. It's been tough (and my DH had booked a week off intending for us all to go camping and obviously that all got cancelled too). That's just life sometimes - as they say on here you just have to suck it up. Google for some activities to do with him online.

biglips · 28/08/2012 12:41

you will have to wait till the last spot scabbed over which it took my dd1 10 days before she cud able to go out again as the last spot was a stubborn spot. it pissed me off when other mums bring their kids out covered in CP and doesnt have a care in the world.

Floggingmolly · 28/08/2012 12:41

You know you are. Don't be tedious, please, this has been done to death.

Snog · 28/08/2012 12:44

play in the garden or visit freinds or family
It's quite irresponsible to go out into the wider community though

lecce · 28/08/2012 12:44

Floggingmolly I'm very sorry but I haven't seen those other threads. My title was very clear, if you feel bored with the topic then why open my thread?

OP posts:
hazeyjane · 28/08/2012 12:46

Op, I think it always gets heated because some people had had/or could potentially have a nightmare with cp, but there are often a few people who come on and say they have done the school run/popped to the shops with their dc when they had cp, and it being aibu, well it all goes a bit crazy!

It is boring, but hopefully you have enough dvds to keep you going for a few days! Unless you know a friend who has had cp, who could visit.

maybenow · 28/08/2012 12:46

Depends where you live - we could easily go to a wood or hills where we wouldn't have to pass within about ten metres of any other walkers even if we did see any coming. We could play with sticks and stones and have a walk.

I would not go out on pavements and DEFINATELY not on public transport or on children's play equipment.

Hulababy · 28/08/2012 12:47

YANBU to be getting bored but, as you already know, yabu if you actually did go out and about where there were other people.

My DD was well with chicken pox too and it can be hard keeping them occupied all week when there are still full of beans and wanting to be doign stuff. But it is only for a week - you'll get through it.

I am with iismum, your only option is going for a walk/bicycle ride in the country/remote beach and make clear with your DS he is not to get close to anyone else than you. Perhaps take a picnic with you? That could be a nice day trip.

Gigondas · 28/08/2012 12:56

I am allowed out for coffee from my ward as currently doing chemo. You would think this is a simple thing but the sheer number of threads like this mean I have to think twice about what I do or where I go cos of stuff like this.

Sorry but this makes my teeth itch as I know it's been done before but advice Is there for a reason. Sorry but Angry have zero fucking sympathy as would love the issue of what to do with a kid at home with cp. And I know that isn't what you meant to inspire op

[am sorry if this is personal and rants but am just pointing out that there are rl stories that indicate this isn't just something people say.

Birnamwood · 28/08/2012 13:21

My friends dd is paralysed from the chest down after suffering complications with the cp virus.

She was a completely healthy, typical 3yo and within a week of contracting it she was in intensive care fighting for her life.

For this reason alone I would never knowingly expose anyone to cp. it just isn't worth the risk.

Op, it's shit having to stay in for a few days but it's only for a few days, not a lifetime, and like others have said, can you not take him out in the car to somewhere that is not busy and let him blow off some steam? Or have a picnic in the garden, make some cakes etc?

tethersend · 28/08/2012 13:33

At the risk of opening another can of worms, this really makes me wonder why we don't vaccinate against CP, particularly now there Is a vaccine for shingles. It seems the only factor is cost.

I got DD1 vaccinated, and will do again for DD2 when she's a year.

Birnamwood, that's terrible. Poor girl Sad

pinkappleby · 28/08/2012 13:34

This is an area where mumsnet advice does not reflect real life: 95% of adults that I told I was keeping my DC in because of chicken pox thought that I was mad. When I asked the drs advice they said that infection of others occurs before the spots are out in so many cases that it isn't worth keeping them in afterwards and they thought I was absolutely mad for suggesting that I keep the siblings of the infected child out of circulation as it was likely they were harbouring it. They thought the younger kids get it, the better so better in some respects to have them circulating.

Mine have had it in the hols so it has been easy to stay in and I have done so. My youngest DD appears to have not caught it, if she has not had it by 15 ish I will consider paying for testing for immunity and immunisation so she won't have to freak out if she is ever pregnant.

HappySeven · 28/08/2012 13:59

There's a vaccine for shingles? Really? I thought one reason we don't immunise in this country is because being exposed to chicken pox regularly (after you've had it once) helps to reduce your chances of developing shingles as it bolsters your immunity to it.

massistar · 28/08/2012 14:03

I feel for you OP, it really isn't much fun. My DS had it while we were on holiday. 36 degree heat and one of us had to stay in with the wee soul watching his sister splashing in the pool from the balcony. For a week!

His sister had a really mild case but he was covered in them and the heat didn't help the itching :-(

Lovecat · 28/08/2012 14:10

I was bored witless when DD had chickenpox and she was very lively with it.

But we didn't go out. If we'd gone out we might have passed by someone like my mum, who is currently undergoing chemo for ovarian cancer - she has a good wig and is otherwise very fit and healthy, you would never know she was immuno suppressed. I have just put off going to visit her, even though I'm longing to, because I have a sniffly cold. Not worth the risk.

I know it's dull and boring but it will be over soon.

tethersend · 28/08/2012 14:11

Yes HappySeven- some info here.

I can only assume they deemed it (and the CP vaccine) not to be cost effective.

Emmielu · 28/08/2012 14:15

When DD had chicken pox we took a blanket and sat in the garden having a picnic. Did some colouring. Made paint bubbles. Made a normal bubble mix. Watched a few films. She stayed in her pjs the whole time. We had DVD days. Ordered pizza one evening. Played games on my laptop.

ByTheWay1 · 28/08/2012 14:20

mmmm some people obviously don't live in the real world....

how do we eat if we can't get food in, CP doesn't magically materialise just after the weekly shop has been done.. how do we get to the doctor (to get antibiotics for the other little one's infection) if we can't get on the bus...

Or do those LPs who don't have family around them just leave the kids home alone... "sorry Mrs Social worker - I left them home alone so I didn't pass CP on "
