Weed smoking as a regular habit

lechatnoir · 27/08/2012 22:24

Talking to a group of old uni mates today and we got talking about the parties, weed smoking etc and I was really Shock that a lot of them still smoked (weed) regularly and a couple had a joint or 2 pretty much every night & didn't see it as any different to those that crack open a bottle of wine once the kids are in bed!
AIBU to think this group were unsual & most 30/40 somethings with jobs & kids aren't doing drugs or am I out of touch with reality?

TBH xmum so am I as I was defnintely shocked how rife it is and how socially acceptable it is, but I do also ponder whether they've got a point & actually is a joint any worse than wine?

i know quite a few people who smoke it on occasion and may dable in other drugs on occasion. all hold down good jobs, are good parents (those who are parents)and all round good people

though people i know who smoke it all the time will often say it has no effect on their life tbh i am not so sure

DoMeDon · 27/08/2012 22:39

YANBU -Most people I know don't smoke it at all. A few have it infrequently.

hairytale · 27/08/2012 22:40

There's a massive difference between skunk (and superskunk) and other varieties. If someone waa smoking skunk every day I'd be worried.

WorraLiberty · 27/08/2012 22:44

If it's being smoked everyday then it could be a problem...just like if someone feels the need to drink everyday could also be a problem.

Personally, I'd prefer a town centre full of stoned people on a Saturday night than a town full of drunks (if I had to choose)

Although the all night garage would probably sell out of Marsbars.....

icecold · 27/08/2012 22:46

i class smoking a joint the same as drinking wine

bobbledunk · 27/08/2012 22:49

I'm in the minority of people I know who don't. I'm a health nut so I don't do anything anymore, much prefer stoners to drinkers.

poorfoxyloxy · 27/08/2012 22:51

I know a few people who do this, but then in my circle of friends are a lot of musicians, performers, and artists. I'd say it's on the same par with drinking wine every night, which is socially more acceptable, but not a healthy habit to be had.

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 27/08/2012 22:51

I know a couple of people who smoke regularly, and it genuinely doesn't seem to affect them at all.

I think it probably has a good chance of affecting their mental health in the long term, but on a daily basis, the people I'm thinking if hold down good jobs, are good parents, and have full and active lives.

I don't really think its that different to alcohol. One glass of wine a day is pretty much the same thing as one joint a day. There might be a degree of dependency there, but in the short term, it's not doing any harm. Both have equal potential to affect health or relationships in the long term though.

NovackNGood · 27/08/2012 22:55

Legalisig cannabis and taxing it could boost the economy by billions,

MrsTerryPratchett · 27/08/2012 22:59

No different to doing anything mind-altering every night. It's not a good idea. No different to drinking, though. I don't smoke myself but agree that legalising would be the sensible thing to do.

BuggerLumpsAnnoyed · 27/08/2012 22:59

I don't think its worse than alcohol. The only problem for me is it is illegal and you are putting a bit of extra risk on your family by having it in the house, especially as its now a class B.

TBH that's probably the only reason I wouldn't really smoke it anymore.

NellyJob · 27/08/2012 23:00

to be honest I have known a fair few parents who do this.

It's not for me (punishable by death penalty where I am anyway) but a lot of friends in the UK smoke more than drink and I don't have an issue with it, apart from its illegality (so therefore it makes me uncomfortable and I don't really want it known that my friends do it).

minikimmi · 28/08/2012 00:26

My weed smoking friends are quite boring if I'm being honest. I have one particular couple we see every few months and I get irritated with them that it's such an integral part of their lives. They smoke dope every night, it's habitual. I'm not fussed about what people want to do with their lives but they never go out and we must always go to theirs. I think it's because they don't want to smoke dope in other people's houses and I suspect they don't know how to relax in normal company without it.

larks35 · 28/08/2012 00:31

I don't, DP does. Not every night and often not for weeks at a time. I find him more interesting and better company when he's a bit stoned compared to a bit drunk.

BustleInYourHedgerow · 28/08/2012 00:33

Any of my friends who do it regularly don't have children. I used to quite a bit before I had DS but looking back it made me lazy, moody and boring. I think some people can get away with doing it regularly without any adverse side effects and some can't, same as alcohol I suppose. I have the odd hankering for some occassionally, but it would feel odd if I were to do it now, haven't had anyfor 4 years now. I have no problem having a few (3 max) glasses of wine or a few bottles of beer if DS is in bed though, although would never get blotto when he was in the house. I suppose the difference is that weed is illegal, and alcohol is not.

larks35 · 28/08/2012 00:34

Actually also compared to when he's sober too Grin. (Don't tell him I said that)

SummerRain · 28/08/2012 00:35

It was dps birthday past week so we have some weed in the house. We don't drink and the last time we had weed was march, so overall we're sober a greater percentage of the time than weekend drinkers.

I know a lot of people who smoke weed (some without children, some with, including my parents), but only once or twice a year, if even. Done occasionally, I don't really see it as a problem. I used to smoke weed the odd time, but in the past couple of years have found that it makes me a moany, depressive pain in the arse, so don't touch it any more. I really don't see it as any more of an issue than a couple of bottles of wine occasionally, at a party or something.

However, DP and I have a friend who has been smoking every day for the past few years. It wasn't a problem at first, but lately it has made him horribly irritating and navel gazing and antisocial. When he comes around for dinner with some other buddies he just gets stoned and falls asleep at the table. When the three of us hang out, all he wants to do is smoke, eat bacon fries, stick on a shit movie, stare vacantly at the screen and talk self-indulgent bollocks. We used to have a great craic, talking shite and laughing and playing board games over a few beers, but he has become a giant headwrecker. We have tried to convince him to smoke less, but he refuses to do so. Oh, and then there was the night that he brought his dodgy-as-fuck dealer to our house, which I had a huge problem with. So, we see a lot less of him now. Sadly (for him), many of his other friends seem to be of the same mind, and are also seeing a lot less of him. What is worse is that he is usually so stoned, he doesn't care.

I do agree that it should be legalised though, then it could be regulated and generate tax revenue.

Jux · 28/08/2012 02:15

I don't smoke - makes my head fuzzy and I fall asleep, both of which are done quite adequately by ms, thank you! DH smokes though, as do most of the people he knows, some more than others. There are a few who light up a spliff when they wake up and have one on the go all day as if they were cigarettes. I find dope smokers incredibly dull, unmotivated, and those I know tend to be pretty anal about it - they spend hours discussing the perfect spliff, for instance Grin

Unacceptable · 28/08/2012 08:35

Was a very timely bit on the morning news when we woke today about cannabis having a negative impact on intelligence and memory but missed most of the report.
Of the dope smokers I know only one girl, who is an occasional dabbler seems to have not become a shadow of her former self. I reckon it's because she is very much an occasional user. A couple of the lads I was referring to upthread were real bright sparks at school but you'd never guess that now. Of course they would tell you that they chose to become solitary figures living in one bedroom flats on the dole and that weed is the safest of all the poisons available to us. Perhaps that's right eh Hmm
