Cerazette - anyone?

Fakershakermaker · 27/08/2012 07:15

Not so much an AIBU but am posting here as this is the most used page. I hope someone can help?

I've started cerazette after many years off the pill. I started it on day 4 of my period, had a few clear days and am now into day 10 of continual spotting. Is this normal - tbh this spotting is getting me down. I haven't yet finished my first pack - am wondering how long I should persevere before going back to the doc ?

I used to get 8 week gaps and then a 2 or 3 week very light pain free period. It didn't bother me. My natural periods are very heavy so it was easy. I might go back on it.

pettyprudence · 27/08/2012 12:27

I had no periods on cerazette but I also had no libido and no real sensation below Blush. I gave up after 6 weeks as there was no way I was going to wait anymore time for things to "settle down". Its thanks to cerazette that we have ds Grin (it didn't fail, just that if i'd been happy on it like I was on microgynon , then we would have waited longer before starting a family).

MrsKwazii · 27/08/2012 12:40

I didn't get any spotting but I did get THE RAGE and quite frankly could have murdered people for the crime of breathing, looking at me or even just existing. Changed to Micronor instead and all has been well.

Krumbum · 27/08/2012 12:55

Is micronor another pop?

NameChangeGalore · 27/08/2012 13:50

I spotted for about 4 months and then my periods stopped. I became a hormonal bitch. I'd scream and shout and cry all the time. It was horrible. I did lose alot of weight though.

YouOldSlag · 27/08/2012 13:54

I've been it for nearly three years and no periods or spotting or bleeding at all. I love it!

NameChangeGalore · 27/08/2012 13:55

Yes micronor is another POP, and I started using it a few months ago. My periods stopped after the first packed. Apparantly if you don't bleed within 45 days you should stop taking it, so on the 50th day I stopped, and I period came back a week later.

I don't know if I should start taking it again when I start my period again.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 27/08/2012 13:57

yes, I had bleeding on cerazette too. My GP said it was a known side effect. Switched to Micronor and have been fine

Hi.
I have now been on Cerazette for 28 days. I was on Yasmin combined previously and had to come off as I was suffereing really low, angry mood swings. At first Cerazette gave me massive headaches and extremely sore breasts. However, I put up with it as my mood completely changed and felt a lot happier even with the headaches. I have started my first period on the 28th day and can say that apart from a slight back ache yesterday I have experienced no other pre-menstrual symptoms(particulary in comparison to Yasmin). THis is also light and bearable. Plus I have done nothing but eat in the time I have been on this but put on no weight! Unreal I know! I have continued with my 3/4 times a week exercise regime but have been eating junk all week whereas before it was just on weekends. I can say I'm very pleased although it may not be anything to do with the pill. I think the other most significant ting for me is my skin is absolutely fab, i wasn't overly spotty before but my skin is positively glowing and I dont have a blemish on it. I am very happy with this too. All in all I will continue with Cerazette as it has been a life saver to me! Here'shoping it continues :-)

OkayHazel · 19/11/2012 16:38

Cerazette is wonderful. Have been on it since I became sexually active. Spotted for a month and have not had a period since!

TwistyBraStrap · 19/11/2012 16:47

I love cerazette as well. Switched to it after DD was born because I didn't want another coil. I was still spotting when I started it after DD so not sure how much of it was cerazette related.

Now have spotting for 10 days every three months. Before I had very heavy periods that used to keep me off work - it's bloody wonderful.

somuchslimmernow · 19/11/2012 16:54

Been on cerazette for 5yyears, could not function without it, has been my life saver.

MsRinky · 19/11/2012 16:54

I adore Cerazette. A few weeks of spotting and then no bleeding at all ever for the last five years. Fabulous.

anewyear · 19/11/2012 16:57

Another who loves cerazette.
I've been on it about 3 years now.
It did take a few months to settle down, I had spotting and then a week every now and then of bleeding.
But it has settled down and I havent had a period for over a year now.
I would persevere for a little longer..

RedToothbrush · 19/11/2012 17:28

Was on Cerazette for 2 years. Had no problems with it. Periods stopped. Bit of stopping at first and felt queasy for several weeks at first but after that BRILLIANT.

Except it wasn't. I came off it 6 weeks ago following a breakdown because of the side effects of it.

Cerazette lists one of the side effects as 'mood swings'. I feel this is a description that takes the piss and doesn't even begin to explain how I felt. 'Mood swings' is not an uncontrollable unrelenting, unchanging anger for days on end and feeling like you want to physically hurt everyone for every conceivable reason you can imagine.

I only put two and two together after reading about other women on cerazette experiencing similar problems after my breakdown. I knew there had to be SOME explanation and since cerazette was the only medication I was on it seemed a good place to start. DH phoned the GP to see if it was a possibility and yep it turned out its not uncommon; I was told to come off immediately. The poor description of side effects as 'mood swings' is why I never made the connection sooner especially since it seemed to build up over a period of time and I didn't really notice what was happening.

Right now okish, I've a lot to sort out which I do believe can be attributed to the effects over a long period of time, but the anger and feeling of having no control over it has completely gone. I don't feel like I am walking around with the weight of the world on my shoulders as it did before. It took about 5 days for that to pass.

I don't want to scare people; cerazette is obviously brilliant for a lot of people. It certainly was great for me physically. But I do want to make people aware of what 'mood swings' and cerazette can mean to some women. I dread to think what could have happened if I'd not worked it out at the very moment I did. I suspect I probably would have acted out some of my feelings. If it hadn't have been for a post similar to this, I don't know where I would be right now.

WhoeverHeardOfAWormskinRug · 19/11/2012 17:32

I am on it, have been since January. Not for contraceptive reasons, I suffer from PMDD and have horrible heavy clotty periods.

At first I had a long bleed, about 3 weeks. That stopped and I had no bleeding at all for 6 months. Started bleeding again, quite heavily in September - stopped the pill for three days (after a GP visit to check BP etc) and then restarted it and the bleeding stopped again.

FatherHankTree · 19/11/2012 17:44

When I took Cerazette, it was excellent for stopping bleeding, but like RedToothbrush, I found it affected my mood. I've had mild depression, but when taking Cerazette, I began to feel very depressed, to the point of ending it all.

Sorry if that sounds melodramatic, but it does have a disturbing effect on some women and it's better to be aware.

JKSLtd · 19/11/2012 17:48

I always try to warn people about Cerazette as mood swings didn't cover it for me either, I was awful on it.
Was so happy when i came off it and realised I wasn't actually a naturally angry cow!

manyhands · 19/11/2012 17:54

I had terrible water retention on it but it worked fine for me for years but suddenly I started having terrible side effects.

happylass · 19/11/2012 18:33

I spotted for 3 months constantly after going on Cerazette and asked to switch to something else. The nurse asked me to persevere and the spotting literally stopped abruptly and I had no period (odd bit of spotting here and there) for the whole of the rest of the time that I took it, which for me was great. Recently came off it as TTC and took 6 weeks for AF to return by put my cycles have been regular since then. I wold definitely give it a while longer if youre not having any other side effects HTH.

jendot · 19/11/2012 18:37

I'm on cerazette. For the 1st month I had spotting and mild headaches.... But since then I have had 3 blissful years of NO bleeding/ periods/ mood swings Tis amazing! I get a very mild headache and ovarian pain for about 2 days as I move onto the first row of pills but that's all!
I would persevere a bit longer as if you do get settled onto it then it's amazing.

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 19/11/2012 18:39

i have been on it for a year and am still spotting Sad
can't have combined pill, the coil was horrific in terms of heavy periods and flooding.
DH has had the snip but we are awaiting the all-clear.....

newusername123 · 19/11/2012 19:08

I have been on it for eight years (!) And have had one period in that, time. It's amazing. However my mum is 44 and went on it for six weeks and nearly.had a nervous breakdown. It varies wildly for different people.....

Kundry · 19/11/2012 19:10

I love Cerazette - for me it's been the best pill ever. However when I started I had bleeding (more than spotting) for about 6 weeks - it was driving me mad. I decided I'd wait until I'd used the 3 packets in the box before giving up as at the time I was using it to control period pain and cyclical migraine and I couldn't have the COCP so I didn't have many other options. SO glad I stuck it out - when the bleeding eventually settled (and it really took it's time) it never came back. 5 years on, no bleeding, no period pain, no migraines - am very very happy with it.

Marbles87 · 19/11/2012 19:16

Just personal experience but amongst my friends Cerazette is known as 'the CRAZY pill'.

I was on it at the same time as my cousin and one of my best friends and, even though the lack of periods is totally fab, the mood swings and crying for no reason meant that the pill definitely served its purpose in that none of us would have been remotely attractive to the opposite sex!

When my friend stopped taking it we had lunch a few days later and she was a completely different person! Now all three of us are off it and I am back to my old self. I'm now taking Micronor, which wouldn't suit some due to the short window in which to take it (3 hours). This one is by far my favourite.
