to want to give dd2 (5) Coco pops for breakfast?

DD2 , age 5, is not fussy about ANY meal apart from breakfast, and thats only weekday/school morning breakfast. Dring the hols and on weekends she will work up an appetite by 10 am and happily tuck into scrambled eggs on wholemeal home baked toast.

I am a full time primary teacher and she attends the school i teach in so our school run is invariably an hour before everyone elses. she just doesn't like eating early in the morning. I have tried porridge (which dd1 and I have every morning), sweetened with honey, with unsweetened cocoa, weetabix warm with honey, plain cereals, oatibix, toasts , fruit etc and I feel like I am force feeding it to her every morning as every mouthful is an unhappy chore but I cant send her to school without breakfast. I have tried giving her breakfast at school when we get there but no luck (ie delaying it by half an hour).

the rest of the day she has a good diet, she eats plenty of fresh fruit and veggies, protein, grilled veggies, but sugary treats/sweets/chocolate/juices/biscuits I just do not buy. However whenever we go past the cereal aisle in sainsburys she will point to coco pops and says 'mummy i'll have that for breakfast on school days'. I am so tempted to just give in and have a fuss free morning where she eats something without tears but I am just not sure with the sugar/salt/rubbish content .

Am I being unreasonable to consider giving her the cocopops or am i being idealistic not to? what would other mumsnetters do?

I really wouldn't worry about them from time to time, but I wouldn't want to exclude everything else either. How about egg and soldiers instead? That takes about the same time to make as porridge on the hob I think.

beachyhead · 25/08/2012 19:45

I do, didn't for my first child but by number 3, the fight has gone Grin

Brioche too sometimes...

EMS23 · 25/08/2012 19:45

They're not poisonous. Is it really that big a deal? If they worry you that much, just give them one morning a week so you're getting one stress free morning.

ssd · 25/08/2012 19:46

please

Hmm
WorraLiberty · 25/08/2012 19:46

YABU to not buy sugary treats/sweets/chocolate/juices/biscuits now and then.

Banning kids from these things makes them a lot more likely to binge on them in the future imo.

Everything in moderation in this house...even the odd box of Cocopops.

SomebodySaveMe · 25/08/2012 19:46

It's just cereal. It's not a massive deal. DS had turkey aeroplanes for dinner purely because he will go days without eating a meal and he chose them in tesco.

You are overthinking this.

AIBU to give my child breakfast cereal for breakfast - no YANBU.

That's what it's for.

Keep your judgey pants for judging other people, not for judging yourself Grin

miomio · 25/08/2012 19:47

We have "naughty cereal" at the weekends. Otherwise it is normal stuff - have a look at the packets - all chocolate cereal is not the same - Chocolate weetabix and Chocolate Wheetos are not too bad.

Give her the coco pops and save yourself some stress Grin

OhNoMyFoot · 25/08/2012 19:47

give her the coco pops. It will not kill her it will get her in the habit of breakfast and to be it might not even work.

ChestyNut · 25/08/2012 19:48

Give her the coco pops.

Definitely not the end of the world.

Catsmamma · 25/08/2012 19:49

what about the variety packs?? they have about half and half ratio of shockers to sensible cereal...including cocoa pops.

If she would eat them all it might be worth buying them instead, and not so bad as CP every morning!

I am a Sensible Adult. I eat very Healthily. But a couple of times a year, I just long for Coco Pops, and the yearning wont go away until I buy a box (and usually consume, by myself, in a day or two!) I always think food should be a pleasure that you look forward to and enjoy. I am positive a small portion of Coco Pops a day wont have any serious impact. Go and write Coco Pops down on your shopping list this very minute! Much better that she will eat Coco Pops than no breakfast at all. Much.

McHappyPants2012 · 25/08/2012 19:50

Every meal time in this house is a nightmare, so I get coco pops along with other cereals for them to pick . I want my coffee in the morning to be peaceful.

JustSpiro · 25/08/2012 19:51

Chocolate Weetabix are vile - would highly recommend Chocolate Shreddies though!

It's one meal a day - 5 days a week, her tastes will change as she gets older.

Just a suggestion - how about buying a couple of the selection packs of individual boxes - she may find a few things she likes other than Coco Pops that you can then buy a couple of larger boxes of. At least that way there is a bit of variety.

bigkidsdidit · 25/08/2012 19:53

I am very keen on good nutrition and think a lot about t and bother a lot about DS's diet - oily fish, range of fruit and veg, and so on

Even I would give her the bleeding coco pops Grin

wigglesrock · 25/08/2012 19:53

My almost 5 year old has coco pops or wheetos most mornings. Although she prefers the Tesco version of both Grin. I have a 7 year old and 18 month old as well and its really difficult to get either of them to have anything for breakfast so I would much prefer a breakfast eater than a non one!

DesperatelySeekingPomBears · 25/08/2012 19:57

You know for a fact you're going to tip the Coco Pops into the bowl, bright with the promise of a stress free breakfast.

Your DD will raise her spoon, take a mouthful and promptly say...

"I don't like it..."

vodkaanddietirnbru · 25/08/2012 19:58

ds (5) likes a mixture of coco pops and cookie crisp for his breakfast. He also likes a toasted sweet waffle with various sweet sauces drizzled over it. DD tends to have a small croissant heated with a thin slice of ham in it.
