to want to give dd2 (5) Coco pops for breakfast?

DD2 , age 5, is not fussy about ANY meal apart from breakfast, and thats only weekday/school morning breakfast. Dring the hols and on weekends she will work up an appetite by 10 am and happily tuck into scrambled eggs on wholemeal home baked toast.

I am a full time primary teacher and she attends the school i teach in so our school run is invariably an hour before everyone elses. she just doesn't like eating early in the morning. I have tried porridge (which dd1 and I have every morning), sweetened with honey, with unsweetened cocoa, weetabix warm with honey, plain cereals, oatibix, toasts , fruit etc and I feel like I am force feeding it to her every morning as every mouthful is an unhappy chore but I cant send her to school without breakfast. I have tried giving her breakfast at school when we get there but no luck (ie delaying it by half an hour).

the rest of the day she has a good diet, she eats plenty of fresh fruit and veggies, protein, grilled veggies, but sugary treats/sweets/chocolate/juices/biscuits I just do not buy. However whenever we go past the cereal aisle in sainsburys she will point to coco pops and says 'mummy i'll have that for breakfast on school days'. I am so tempted to just give in and have a fuss free morning where she eats something without tears but I am just not sure with the sugar/salt/rubbish content .

Am I being unreasonable to consider giving her the cocopops or am i being idealistic not to? what would other mumsnetters do?

I had the same problem with my DD2 (5).
Just buy her the coco pops, it's better than nothing. Mine has coco pops and rice crispies mixed together so it's a bit better.
Anything for a quite life Grin

check out the lower salt and sugar cereals I was suprised at some that were not as bad as I imagined (not great but not as bad) such as chocolate wheetos think it was the which results that listed them and rice crispies and weetabix came out best.

HappySunflower · 25/08/2012 20:01

Give her the cocoa pops- so long as she brushes her teeth extra specially well to brush the sugar off afterwards!

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 25/08/2012 20:01

yes justhad that was a recommendation too, mix the healthier stuff with kids choices

ApocalypseCheeseToastie · 25/08/2012 20:01

Yabu.

Sugar puffs are nicer.

londonmackem · 25/08/2012 20:02

Mix them with rice crispies

Doilooklikeatourist · 25/08/2012 20:04

Go with the coco pops
DS ( 17 ) still has them for a school day breakfast
He's now about 5 - 10 tall , all his own teeth and very healthy

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 25/08/2012 20:04

it really was suprising to find that Bran flakes and special K and cornflakes were no where near as good as I imagined in terms of sugar / salt /fat

lalaloopylou · 25/08/2012 20:05

Buy her the coco pops, if she's anything like my dc she will be fed up of them after a while and start asking for something else

IdPreferNot · 25/08/2012 20:06

If she's not hungry for breakfast to the point that she'll only eat chocolate, then how about letting her skip breakfast? Some people really don't get on with it. If she'll have a glass of milk or fresh juice, then give her that and let her wait until snack or lunch for food. If her teacher tells you she's falling asleep or failing to do her work or getting cranky, then reconsider. But I think a child who is only hungry for coco pops just isn't hungry.

StripyMagicDragon · 25/08/2012 20:07

My dd (3.5) has chocolate cheerios, coco pops or honey cheerios before nursery during the week as it's the only thing she'll eat quickly that early. Diet is about variation and a bit of everything. Plus coco pops are tasty, I enjoy them myself!

IslaValargeone · 25/08/2012 20:09

I am a vehement anti coco popper, but I like londonmackem's mix with Rice Krispies suggestion :o

AmazingBouncingFerret · 25/08/2012 20:12

You cannot mix coco pops with other cereal! Shock

OP give her the coco pops.

I lived on coco pops when I was younger. Didnt do me any harm. much

gimmecakeandcandy · 25/08/2012 20:12

Well I think you are being U (despite my name Wink ) as giving her coco pops shit in a box is only helping to give her an unhealthy chocolate in the morning habit she will carry through to adulthood. Give her cheerios at least! They are at least one of the bette cereals

QuangleWangleQuee · 25/08/2012 20:14

We've got 6 boxes of coco pops to get through as we wanted two of the sip and tip bowls you can get with 3 vouchers. (Bowl with integral straw to suck out the milk.)

Ismeyes · 25/08/2012 20:15

Pom and I'dprefernot are right. I can't bear to eat breakfast-I'm not hungry when I wake and if I eat I feel sick. I eat eggs later in the morning too. Can she have a boiled egg for snack?

mrswoz · 25/08/2012 20:18

I do the mixing half and half with plain rice krispies, surely that's cutting down the sugar to a lower level? I started doing it as someone else said, to get them into the habit of eating breakfast, made it easier to move on to other things. My DC have always been willing to eat eggs and toast for breakfast but that's not a realistic weekday breakfast choice!

But be warned, I have bought what I classed as rubbishy cereals in the past out of desperation to get them to eat breakfas , and they didn't like them as much as they thought they would!

mamij · 25/08/2012 20:18

Buy cocopops and rice krispies and mix them together if you're really worried.

mamij · 25/08/2012 20:19

Oops, x-post with mrswiz.

MammyToMany · 25/08/2012 20:21

I love coco pops.

My boys have muller corners for breakfast and a waffle thing that you stick in the microwave for 30 seconds

Wallace · 25/08/2012 20:23

They are half price at Tesco at the moment Grin

mrswoz · 25/08/2012 20:28

Not just us mam, lots of others suggested it too :)

Someone also suggested Cheerios, but these have around 20 per cent sugar iirc? They seem to have changed between DS and DD cos they were never that bad when DS was weaning I'm sure, bought some to give DD and thought they seemed sweet, checked the sugar sure enough they've crammed it in!

just1fornow · 25/08/2012 20:28

I had a similar problem with my DD who 2.5 we have come to a compromise of chocolate Cheerios as they have less sugar than cocopops and don't taste much different.

sherazade · 25/08/2012 20:29

On the rare maybe twice ever ocassion where she has skipped breakfast she has come to me in the playground and told ne she's hungry ,this is when i come out to collect ny class for register. I felt terrible ! Thanks for all replies, i feel less guilty about trying it out and will consider some of the suggestions like cheerios/mixing with rice crispies.
