I know they are but deep down I still don't think I completely believe Blush

don't shout at me, am just curious to know if dismissing them as a sort of conspiracy theory was common once upon a time

it is Bad

there was this racehorse . . . argh

am trying Goodfellas instead, how scary can THAT be?

SchrodingersMew · 25/08/2012 16:46

No idea, haven't seen it either. Blush

The whole nine yards is good though and Analyse this and Analyse that. :o

busynotbored · 25/08/2012 16:48

u want to watch a real mafia film try "cento Passi" it's subtitled but well worth it. Oh and "gomorra". I love the godfather but cringe when they speak in Sicilian, Goodfellas is a great film too although MORE violent than the godfather don't u think ?

ArielThePiraticalMermaid · 25/08/2012 16:48

The Russian Mafia. Another big and scary thing.

Alameda · 25/08/2012 16:52

I don't know, haven't seen - am just downloading it but will try your recommendations busynotbored

have heard enough about the Russian 'mafia' to last forever and ever and ever and it all makes me feel sick

I remember analyse this (or that?) was funny, more my kind of film I think!

SchrodingersMew · 25/08/2012 17:00

I haven't heard much about the Russian Mafia but for some reason know I don't want to as it is disturbing (I think I must have heard someone talking about it.)

Analyse this and that are great, a good laugh. I think I might give one of the more serious Mafia films a go, I just liked the comedy ones because I loved Joe Viterelli but he died. :(

Boardwalk Empire is good if you are a TV show fan.

Alameda · 25/08/2012 17:01

gomorra(h) looks a bit too real, is it based on same camorra that gaetano marino was head of?

My mum comes from Naples. Once as a cocky teenager at around the age of fourteen i cracked some joke about the mafia. Cant remember what i said now cos it was years ago but she told me it wasnt funny and nothing to joke about.
And if i remember rightly there is stuff on the internet somewhere about an Italian banker who was found hung under Blackfriars Bridge in the early 80s with bricks stuffed in his pockets. He was refferred to in Italy as Gods banker because of his connections with the Vatican.

Alameda · 25/08/2012 17:03

that was surely much more recent than the 80s? I remember that carer

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roberto_Calvi

Roberto Calvi. That was it. I could not remember his bloody name.

Alameda · 25/08/2012 17:07

oh yes, what a horrible way to go

and oh wow, you are right, it was the early 80s

how did I get so old?

OP posts:
carernotasaint · 25/08/2012 17:12

i dont actually remember it happening. but i found it on the web when was trying to find out more about Italy and its history in general. My mum doesnt talk about it so me and DB know fuck all about that side of our family history (though DB isnt that interested anyway)

Alameda · 25/08/2012 17:19

oh I think I remember you from one of the parlare italiano threads, was it you? you wished your mum had taught you or something

might not have been you, is time for a new thread though!

OP posts:
carernotasaint · 25/08/2012 18:06

Yep that was me. She didnt speak Italian directly to me as a child but always spoke it when on the phone to relatives. But i always had a sixth sense instinct type thing that i knew what she was talking about on the phone. So i think its in my sub concious somewhere. it prob just needs unlocking.

SoleSource · 25/08/2012 18:37

Avan pulled up outside here today. On the side there was tne name Woodfellas. Probably the mafia has hit hard times.

NovackNGood · 25/08/2012 21:44

bronze · 25/08/2012 22:00

Sole I think you may have beaten the world bad pun record

SoleSource · 25/08/2012 22:30

Lol bronze. I swear it is true. Just after I read this thread maybe they're watching monitoring my MN usage.

Alameda · 25/08/2012 22:49

Will someone please explain to me about the mafia and all the different types? My only experience of the mafia is Fat Tony in The Simpsons Blush

Alameda · 25/08/2012 23:19

surely ignorance is bliss?

I think it's a term used for many sorts of organiseed crime groups, whereas I was thinking mainly of the (exported) Sicilians

OP posts:
vamosbebe · 25/08/2012 23:28

It definitely does still exist: they take a couple of lira centimos from every fish sold in the markets of Palermo; on my 15 minute walk to work I'd pass 4 buildings with two armed guards outside as there lived anti-mafia judges and their families; someone was shot in broad daylight in the market in my boyfriend's district of El Capo, of course NO ONE saw anything! You could feel that they had their sticky little fingers in every pie, but didn't see it up close - thank god!!

And don't go to Corleone thinking it's got a Godfather museum or a park named after Marlon Brando or anything, the locals are still baffled by the tourists that turn up!

cocolepew · 25/08/2012 23:29

Watch The Sopranos for US Mafia stuff, its excellent.

Most Mafia type films are violent, its kind of their thing Grin

BarredfromhavingStella · 25/08/2012 23:32

Lol, trust me when I say the Mafia are real, very very real

Alameda · 25/08/2012 23:43

I do know they are real REALLY

there's just a bit deep down that goes Hmm at how something so fucked up could proliferate and defy justice/evade destruction etc for so long
