I know they are but deep down I still don't think I completely believe Blush

don't shout at me, am just curious to know if dismissing them as a sort of conspiracy theory was common once upon a time

Funny how priests believe in made up, unprovable things, and think real, corporeal things don't exist... Grin

Alameda · 25/08/2012 15:55

am sure most priests don't go in for this sort of denial

am worried about upsetting God now

SchrodingersMew · 25/08/2012 16:00

I think the Mafia definitely exist.

Not religious and don't know much about religion but is Alameda not the Priest from Stigmata? :o

JaquelineHyde · 25/08/2012 16:01

The American mafia tends not to be linked anywhere and is a little Mickey mouse in comparisson to the official Scicillian and Southern Italian mafia organisations.

However, this does not negate the terror they have caused to people living and working in their neighbourhoods.

The Ndrangheta is one of Italy's most prolific mafia families and it is reported that their 'business dealings' account for 2.9% ish of Italy's total GDP. They most certainly exist.

Alameda · 25/08/2012 16:02

is it?

am named after a place and a song (about a different place with the same name), both of which haunt me

OP posts:
Alameda · 25/08/2012 16:03

oh you are sort of right, Alameida

spooky Confused

OP posts:
SchrodingersMew · 25/08/2012 16:06

That is a bit spooky if it was completely unconnected. :o

Socknickingpixie · 25/08/2012 16:10

no apsolutly not they dont exist and according to my mother any member of it even tho they dont exist is JUST AN HONEST BUSINESS MAN and you just dont ask Wink

Alameda · 25/08/2012 16:11

have never seen the film, would probably scare me out of what little wits I have

OP posts:
Alameda · 25/08/2012 16:12

are you one of my sisters sock!

OP posts:
invicta · 25/08/2012 16:14

Alameda, I half agree with you in that I think I always knew they were real, but growing up, they seemed to have a slightly mythical status, and perhaps more relevant/ important in the past. I think it was only when I was older I realised their full impact, along with people like the triads etc.

SchrodingersMew · 25/08/2012 16:15

I don't think it's that scary unless your are maybe extremely religious and believe in Stigmata...

Tis a good film. :) Anyway, I will bugger off, sorry about the hijack! :o

Socknickingpixie · 25/08/2012 16:22

bugger, possibly. any members of your family ever been held under RICO?

urmmmmm name change may be inorder Grin

Alameda · 25/08/2012 16:25

no but I bet some of them should have been

it was a welcome hijack schrodinger (your name always makes me think of 'the end of mr y' for some reason) in fact I might watch that film online now, while it is still daylight

Alameda · 25/08/2012 16:27

IF YOU CAN CALL THIS DAYLIGHT

OP posts:
SchrodingersMew · 25/08/2012 16:28

I haven't heard of that before and have just googled. Sounds very intriguing. :)

SchrodingersMew · 25/08/2012 16:29

Completely agree, it was lovely earlier, now it's dark and pouring. :(

BenedictsCumberbitch · 25/08/2012 16:32

DH takes the piss out of me endlessly because I once said I didn't believe in the mafia. Or identity theft. But that one is for another thread. I'm actually quite a clever person. Honest Blush

Alameda · 25/08/2012 16:33

oh it's great, but reads like it should already be a film

my daughter just gave me the heebies by saying she is doing a stigmata photo shoot in a few weeks - either is she is spying on me on here or it is some sort of sign

suppose am lucky to freak myself out so easily without recourse to weed or whatever

OP posts:
Socknickingpixie · 25/08/2012 16:34

lol.

re the film its father paulo alameida who dies near the begining and the statue weeps blood when his funeral is held hes the priest who owned the rosery the girl ended up with

busynotbored · 25/08/2012 16:36

The Mafia are real, very real, they now go by the name of the Italian Government. The American mafia and Sicilian Mafia are very different, the Sicilian mafia don't flaunt their wealth by driving round in big, expensive cars drawing attention to themselves. They are very much a part of everyday life in our area of Sicily. Don't piss em off and ur fine.

SchrodingersMew · 25/08/2012 16:36

Benedicts Could be worse, my ex didn't believe in Dinasaurs. Shock Not because he was a creationist or anything just simply no one had ever really pointed out to him that they weren't just a kids story.

He actually though the skeletons in exhibits were paper mache made for kids to see. Hmm

Would love to hear about the identity theft though. Wink

Alameda · 25/08/2012 16:37

am not going to watch that film, it sounds horrible and not even in a particularly entertaining way

will watch a mafia film instead (not godfather though, I know I won't get past That Bit near the start)

OP posts:
MrsRobertDuvallHasRosacea · 25/08/2012 16:40

Well of course it's real.
My husband was very close to Don Corleone.
Grin

SchrodingersMew · 25/08/2012 16:40

I don't know what bit that is, I have honestly never seen it Blush or Scarface...
