These stupid women are doing feminism no favours at all.

Tired of explaining that feminists are not spiteful, humourless, ignorant bullies? Unfortunately we're going to have to do a bit more of it.

No one who advocates book burning can ever expect to be treated with any respect. It's never a good idea. It just shows you up as a historically ignorant, idiotic control freak.

Not at all touchy Sigmund. Just providing a bit of context for your remarks.

'Just providing a bit of context for your remarks.'

Why? Do you think people are interested?

24Hours · 25/08/2012 16:20

Eh?

Do I think people are interested in things I post on a message board? Ummm, some things, I guess. If not they can skip over. That's how it works, Sigmunde.

SigmundFraude · 25/08/2012 16:30

Do you think people are interested in my perceived (by you) 'agenda', is what I meant.

24Hours · 25/08/2012 16:34

I'm sure some will be. Anyway, it's your words, not mine, which will make my case.

Burning books strikes me as being controlling, "I don't like it, Therefore you can't read it"

Its not a big leap to "my way or the highway"

24Hours · 25/08/2012 18:44

No not any More Bony Back Jefferson, it wont and can't prevent anyone from reading it. All this publicity stunt can do is make a big splash for the opposing side.it's. Not censorship
I don't agree with what she did, because of the historical connotations, but I can't really fault her position because of the gender politics connotations either

TheLightPassenger · 25/08/2012 18:51

agree with squoosh and ruby. From what I have seen of it, it's both crap and vile. But I don't believe in any books being burnt.

exoticfruits · 25/08/2012 19:10

A sure way to sell more copies! Wonderful publicity!

exoticfruits · 25/08/2012 19:12

It is a free country - books should never be censored. Just don't read it - I haven't and have no desire to. I have read a very funny précis of it so don't need to - otherwise burning it is the one thing that might motivate me to see what it was all about.

"No not any More Bony Back Jefferson, it wont and can't prevent anyone from reading it."

And yet the connotation of oppression is still there.

PretzelTime · 25/08/2012 20:49

Whatever, they just want attention. Not like you need more copies of that bestseller around anyway.

However OP, I don't remember Jane Eyre "portraying sexual violence with a young woman romantically" too?
