To think a tumble dryer should last TWO YEARS?

I bought a tumble dryer through next directory in November 2010. It is a whirlpool sixth sense. It broke last year, stopped tumbling, whirlpool via Next came and fixed it.

It broke again on Monday, same problem. I have been chasing them since then to get it fixed. Told that it is "out of guarantee" "someone will call whirlpool and get back to me" and "I'm talking to them now, will call you back shortly."

I am PISSED OFF! I want my TWO HUNDRED POUND dryer fixing/replacing!

AIBU to think that if I spend that much on a white good it should last longer than 21 months?

I bought a Creda tumble dryer in 1973 to dry DD's nappies I only got rid of it 3 years ago as the timer went plus it was looking rather tired and I didn't use it very much as there is only DH and me at home now.

Can I slightly hijack to say I bought a Miele tumble drier (reduced from £550 to £450 on offer in House of Fraser) back in 2003. It sat in its packaging til DH and I bought a house in 2004 (the house we were buying when I ordered the drier fell through and it took an age to find another). We then used it for just under 3 years, during which time the thermostat broke and was replaced 3 times. It was repaired under guarantee the first 2 times, then we bought an extended guarantee to cover the third time.

The bloody thing then sat in storage at my mother's house for 2.5 years whilst DH and I were living in London in a rented place. The last replacement thermostat was fitted in November 2006, we moved at the beginning of January 2007 and returned in May 2009. We then began using the drier again, and bugger me but it broke AGAIN in January 2011. Miele were utterly crap - they basically didn't believe me when I told them we'd only been using the machine for just over 4 years and in that time it had had 4 thermostats. They made us pay for the repair, which should have cost £120, but eventually after a Twitter campaign they gave us a discount on the part cost so it actually cost £80 Hmm. When the engineer came out, he checked the machine's computer which indicates how many hours' usage the machine has had - and it had only done about 600 hours. So every 100 hours ish, it needs a new thermostat. If they can tell this from connecting a laptop to the machine, why question me when I say how little it has been used?

I will never ever buy another Miele appliance as long as I live - because when their stuff breaks, they don't give a shiny shit.

Apologies for hijack. YANBU.

Hijack away.

Well next are still being pretty rubbish, asked me to message them on fb. There is no MSG function on their page! Via twitter, nowt!

Whirlpool I have had two responses and they seem to be ready to help. If they sort it at no cost then hooray for them!

Next however. Angry

We bought a small Philips (now Whirlpool) tumbledrier when DS1 was born 25 years ago. Still working - we have cleaned it out thoroughly several times and replaced odd bits. I'd like it to fail so I can get a new one, but the .... thing keeps going.

Next use Appliances Online for their electrical goods.

My Whirlpool dryer is 14 years old and still going strong, the matching washer died about 7 years ago.

well slightly off track, but I have a teknics tv (tesco brand) and they refunded me £60 when the remote stopped working after 21 months (it was not the batteries btw!) and the buttons on the side stopped working properly, the volume one is just as likely to change channel or turn the tv off as raise the volume. I think that was just under a third of the price, so I was pleased.

We bought a Whirlpool dryer 12 years ago. It went wrong 6 times in 4 months, I swear the repair man spent more time at my house than he did at his! After the 4th time we asked for our money back, but neither Comet or Whirlpool would give it us. In the time they argued with us it went wrong twice more! We had to get Trading Standards involved in the end, and they did backdown and give us a refund.

We replaced it with a Hotpoint which is still working well and never given us a minutes trouble, touch wood!

Really old stuff lasts for ever - my DMum bought a tumble drier when she had my sister in 1970 to dry her nappies in. It's still going strong. She has only had 3 washing machines during her adult life. She is now 73.

They purposely make modern stuff unlikely to last - the technology exists to make durable white goods, but hardly anyone does. To be fair to Miele, their washing machines go on for ever but they are crapola if you ever actually have a problem - so much for their 'ever better' claims. Hmm

I have an email address for next (finally) so we shall see what they say!

Update!

Whirlpool engineer has been today. It can be repaired but will cost a fortune in parts and possibly still not work. New dryer is to be delivered! Grin

Whirlpool I salute you! Excellent service all round.

Next - any time with the contact?!
