To think Donnie Darko is a massively underated film

I frequently argue this would be in my top ten films and people are usually skeptical.

I think it is a masterpiece of cinema. So many layers, great characters, complex plot etc

I totally agree!

Yet, everyone else seems to think it's garbage..

I just guess they don't have the intellectual insight that I do Grin

ErikNorseman · 23/08/2012 10:14

I think it's extraordinary and mind blowing.

shesariver · 23/08/2012 10:15

I get this to, its a fantastic film, not watched it for years actually now will have to drag out the DVD. It is a bit mad though Grin

BarbarianMum · 23/08/2012 10:17

I think its fantastic, on which basis YAprobablyBU as I rarely enjoy 'masterpieces of cinema'.

KellyElly · 23/08/2012 10:18

I need to watch it again. I watched it years ago and thought it was a bit weird and now I hardly remember it.

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 23/08/2012 10:27

YANBU - it is a great film, although I did have to watch it twice to really figure out what was going on Blush

ChitchatAtHome · 23/08/2012 10:29

I ADORE this film! Watched it with my neighbour's 15 year old daughter, pointing out things so that she could make the connections, and now she loves it too. One convert at a time. Grin

airedailleurs · 23/08/2012 10:30

Brilliant film

gallifrey · 23/08/2012 10:49

very good film indeed, I need to watch it again not seen it for ages!

KlarkyKat · 23/08/2012 10:50

Amazing film, still don't think I've understood it but that's never impaired my enjoyment! Bloody brilliant.

thisisyesterday · 23/08/2012 10:53

no! i hate it. i don't get it AT ALL.

i have thus decided that everyone else merely pretends to get it in order to look cool.

NeverKnowinglyUnderstood · 23/08/2012 10:56

I think it is great..
Also a great film is Memento with Guy Pearce from Neighbours

notyummy · 23/08/2012 11:02

I love it. Not sure I understand it all, but I still enjoy it. Some great performances - love the very real brother/sister vibe between Jake and Maggie G - and the late Patrick S in a VERY different role for him. Showed what he could do outside of cheesy stuff.

Naysa · 23/08/2012 11:04

I think it's massively over rated. When I was a teen a lot of my friend's used to think it was amazing and by watching it and "getting it" somehow made them really deep and cool. It's alright. Bit too much effort to watch the first time but I wouldn't say it's amazing.

HellonHeels · 23/08/2012 11:05

Must admit I never 'got' it and that's why I think it's overrated.

AugustMoon · 23/08/2012 11:06

One of my absolute favourite films.

Bintang · 23/08/2012 11:08

I agree rubbeerglove. Utterly brilliant film, and what a soundtrack!

squoosh · 23/08/2012 11:11

As rabbit films go I prefer Harvey

Dawndonna · 23/08/2012 11:11

Love it!

Orenishii · 23/08/2012 11:11

You can't hate something just because you don't get it!

I don't get Lost Highway...I sort of do but I could never, ever articulate it. But I don't hate it. I hate myself instead Wink

What I dislike is all this inverted snobbery about films that are surreal and have non-linear story arcs doesn't mean they are trying to be too cool for school. I mean - some do obviously - but films that are at their heart intelligent and challenging are earnest in that. Donnie Darko is a genuine film of earnest story telling that requires that non linear style because it supports the narrative. Pan's Labyrinth was very much the same - kinda tricksy in it's storytelling. If there's a point to it, it can be used very well and DD definitely does it well.

But then I guess you either like time travelling, non linear surreal realism, or you don't. I definitely go out of my way to avoid cliched, stereotype-perpetuating sex pigeon-holing romantic comedies so I guess...horses for courses Grin

TheLaineyWayIsEssex · 23/08/2012 11:14

I agree I LOVE it. Not sure I fully understand it, but yes what a soundrack!

JodieHarsh · 23/08/2012 11:15

It's not underrated! It's a cult classic! Confused

lottiegarbanzo · 23/08/2012 11:15

It's well made but very, very saddening. Essentially it would have been better had the mentally ill lead died than that he lived. A bleak message.

thisisyesterday · 23/08/2012 11:15

yes i can!

maybe one of you can convert me by telling me what the fuck it's actually about?

a lovely friend of mine once took me to see the directors cut in some weird tiny underground cinema in London, sadly I think it was wasted on me!

generally i think i'm fairly intelligent, don't enjoy trashy rom coms, prefer watching things with a bit more substance and storyline.... but i just don't get this film!

CharminglyOdd · 23/08/2012 11:15

YANBU. That's my viewing-whilst-ironing sorted for the afternoon! Grin
