To think Donnie Darko is a massively underated film

I frequently argue this would be in my top ten films and people are usually skeptical.

I think it is a masterpiece of cinema. So many layers, great characters, complex plot etc

Well yeah of course, you can do whatever you like Grin

I guess I just mean, not getting it is one thing, finding it frustrating and not understanding it...totally fine. But at least recognise that it's not trying to be fancy-pants for its own sake...that the back to frontness, the oddness, the surrealism - they're all valid as part of the story?

Haha - don't be a hater!

"But at least recognise that it's not trying to be fancy-pants for its own sake"

ahh but you would say that! lol Wink

squoosh · 23/08/2012 11:24

Has Jake Gyllenhaal had something done to his face since this film? He looks so different.

almapudden · 23/08/2012 11:24

I love it. It's not as deep as it thinks though. There's a good article/review debunking its profundity somewhere, will try and dig it out.

Orenishii · 23/08/2012 11:26

^ Hahaha!

There was a great Steve Buscemi film years ago, where he was trying to be a fancy pants director, making a surreal "independent" film. So a kind of film within a film story. There was a bit in it where he wanted a surreal dream sequence and had employed a dwarf to represent something-or-other, and the dwarf was kicking up a fuss saying "Yeah right, directors ALWAYS use dwarves to represent their stupid surreal think-they're-clever bullshit ideas!"

Hahaha! That's fancy-pants for its own sake, and also - points for being a bit meta since it was a dig at the film industry Wink

Ormiriathomimus · 23/08/2012 11:28

Lord! I can't remember much about it. I know we watched it once but either I had partaken too much of illegal substances or I fell asleep. I am left with the feeling it was very dark and a little confusing. DS1 wants to watch it so maybe I'll get a copy.

almapudden · 23/08/2012 11:29

Orenishii - Twin Peaks springs to mind!

Trills · 23/08/2012 11:29

I like it, but I don't think it's underrated.

I guess we move in different circles.

MimsyBorogroves · 23/08/2012 11:30

One of my favourite films. A masterpiece.

Melpomene · 23/08/2012 11:33

I loved it - saw it when it first came out and keep meaning to see it again.

Would also second the recommendation of 'Memento' above.

Another quirky alternate reality film which I saw recently and loved is 'Mr Nobody' with Jared Leto; I think that's another one which people will either love or hate.

almapudden · 23/08/2012 11:37

Oops, fucked up the link. this is the Donnie Darko review which discusses how it's not actually as complicated as people seem to think.

Trills · 23/08/2012 11:41

People told me that Inception was really difficult and confusing and complicated, and I kept putting off watching it because I was a bit tired and wanted to be fully concentrating.

I concluded that the people in question must never have watched or read any science fiction or similar.

These things are really not that difficult.

Bintang · 23/08/2012 11:48

Haha trills- you are so right about inception!

*spoiler alert

Why didn't Michael Caine just visit them in France? Confused

whatsonyourplate · 23/08/2012 11:49

YANBU
My favourite film ever. I cried buckets at the end when we first saw it - was still crying when we got in the car to go home!
Saved the DVD to watch in early labour with DC1.
I love the 80s vibe and soundtrack.

Rilson · 23/08/2012 11:53

A cult classic! Brilliant film,it came out the year we bought our first house and we had the Frank poster on the wall.Used to freak my mum out.

Love the late 80's vibe too.One of my top 10 films for sure.

lottiegarbanzo · 23/08/2012 11:58

Whatever your opinion of the film, I think 'massively underrated' is just incorrect though. Therefore YABU.

It's generally quite highly rated and considered a cult classic, though certainly best loved by younger viewers, so lacking the reach and universality required to be a true classic.

If you actually think it's the best film ever and should top all film critics' top 100 lists, thus its general but quiet acclaim is truly an underestimation, then you're wrong and need to watch a lot more films.

rubberglove · 23/08/2012 12:54

The time travel aspect is cool, but it is more the criticism levelled at society I love. The hypocrisy of fundamental religion, the stifling of individuality in the school system, polarising human emotion etc

Hugely over rated tbf.
Often appears in lists of best movies/cult classics despite being rubbish

BarredfromhavingStella · 23/08/2012 14:36

YABU, overated & requires far to much effort to watch.

griphook · 23/08/2012 14:38

Could someone please explain it to me! I want to like it just don't get it. Can you explain it how you would a give year old please, not being sarky but time travel often confuses me

wigglesrock · 23/08/2012 14:41

I liked it, it was alright, saw it years ago but it has become overated now I think. I don't think its a cult classic.

GothAnneGeddes · 23/08/2012 14:43

YABU - hugely overrated and gushed over, despite being wibbly toss.

At the risk of sounding like a ponce, that films like that are so highly rated, makes me wish people watched more films from outside Hollywood.

As for Inception, don't even get me started on that load of arse. Likewise Drive.

wigglesrock · 23/08/2012 14:46

Oh God no, I loved Drive. Inception - meh
