to think I was a bit rude

U dropped into a local community parenting type place today to find out what they've got going on. Just had ds2 and used to go to a lot of groups that they used to run when ds1 was a baby.

Anyway the work they do is quite similar to what I do for a living. I got introduced to the new parent activities coordinator to talk about groups. She said she didn't have much planned as she's leaving soon.

My ears pricked up! I've always wanted to work there. So I asked her about her qualifications and hours she worked and what the criteria was for her role. The role she's not even left yet.

That was quite rude of me wasn't it?

Not really - she told you she was leaving

WithoutCaution · 22/08/2012 12:55

Don't think it was rude at all

Treblesallround · 22/08/2012 12:56

No, not rude at all. Get in there!

ParsleyTheLioness · 22/08/2012 12:56

You've got to get in where you can I think! But I would probably have phrased it as what qualifications were needed for the role, rather than her personal qualifications. It's less intrusive learnt from bitter experience

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 22/08/2012 12:56

It might have felt to her like you were being a bit pushy, but if she is saying she hasn't got anything planned because she is leaving soon, then that doesn't sound like she is giving the job her best anyway. So she has no reason to be offended if someone else does show enthusiasm for it, the job will still need doing in her absence.

dontcallmehon · 22/08/2012 13:04

No, I don't think you were rude at all.

badtime · 22/08/2012 13:31

You weren't rude, you were networking.

MrsKeithRichards · 22/08/2012 13:34

Networking! That's what it's called!

Alliwantisaroomsomewhere · 22/08/2012 13:38

Definitely not rude.

whyme2 · 22/08/2012 13:45

Not rude and good luck with the job application.

MrsKeithRichards · 22/08/2012 13:48

I think I will apply when it comes up. I'm still on maternity leave until Jan but would happily go back early for this job!

TroublesomeEx · 22/08/2012 13:52

What a stroke of luck!

Definitely not rude, and good luck.

Justme23 · 22/08/2012 13:56

Not really, if anything you've probably saved her a whole load of hassle finding a replacement.

The last job I left (albeit 6 years ago) to move where I am now made me recruit my own replacement, which was a bloody nightmare whilst selling two houses, buying new one, moving, finding tenants for the one I had just left AAAARRRGGGHH, makes me shudder just thinking about it.

Good on you, go for it.

There is going to be a gap by the.sounds of it as funding for the post hasn't been confirmed yet.

I'm going to stalk the website now!

nickelcognito · 22/08/2012 16:57

of course it's not rude!
they do say that people who are already known are more likely to get jobs...

squoosh · 22/08/2012 17:00

Proactive not rude

NCForNow · 22/08/2012 17:01

Not rude. A woman once asked me how much I earned in my role as it was what she wanted! I told her that she was being rude!

CremeEggThief · 22/08/2012 17:02

Rude? No.
Quick off the mark and proactive? Yes.

Good luck :).

AChickenCalledKorma · 22/08/2012 17:05

Did you actually say that you were interested in the job? Because if you didn't, I reckon you should be phoning them up and telling that you are interested. Don't just stalk the website - you'll kick yourself if you miss it, or it goes to an internal candidate. No harm in saying "I gather from X that she's thinking of moving on and I'm very interested in applying if a vacancy arises, can you put me on your mailing list?"

Ha! Just remembered this thread, guess where I'm starting on monday!

You were not being rude. You were being oportunistic. Good luck.

TroublesomeEx · 18/07/2013 11:38
