who seems to have been sucked in by Ian Brady's 'charms'?

just watched the documentary on channel 4. she's so...defensive of Brady.

WHY on earth would you keep a letter in your possession that may reveal the body of one of the victims? WHY?

Debeez · 20/08/2012 22:12

Within the first five minutes of the documentary started DP and I had commented on how see seems to be enjoying the reflected notoriety.

That said, she doesn't seem the most astute of people, perhaps she's been sucked into his little games and doesn't see it?

EightiesChick · 20/08/2012 22:13

She did not seem particularly bright to me, on the basis of the programme.

Brady seems perfectly capable of expressing his own opinions; plus he doesn't seem AFAIK to have a known learning disability or anything that might disadvantage him in making his feelings known. So my guess would be that his motives in having a mental health advocate would be to manipulate them. Seeing her in the programme made that seem pretty likely.

TommeeTipsy · 20/08/2012 22:14

I wonder if ian brady will die quite soon now he doesn't have anyone to torment now that Winne Johnson has died?

LadyBeagleEyes · 20/08/2012 22:16

I just watched that.
She seemed totally manipulated and defensive of him.

Nanny0gg · 20/08/2012 22:19

There is an article in the Sunday Times where she is highly critical of the programme and withdrew her consent to it - which was ignored. She feels it was very much sensationalised, although she knows how manipulative Brady is.
She has a degree in human rights law and a masters in criminology.
She also informed the police as soon as Brady gave her those letters.

somedayma · 20/08/2012 22:21

nanny I thought that too but it said at the end of the documentary that since she had felt unable to inform the police about the letter, the producers had done it instead

EightiesChick · 20/08/2012 22:23

I can believe she was not happy with the final edit of the programme. I can also well believe she was subtly encouraged to do it by Brady who had a shrewd idea of how it would turn out. Adds to his desired public image and makes her look like the idiot. Her masters in criminology doesn't seem to have been put to the best use.

SucksFake · 20/08/2012 22:59

I have just finished watching this on Sky+.

She has made me so angry. I absolutely agree she has been manipulated by Brady. So the letter is now back in his possession. He denied Winnie Johnson any closure on the horrendous way her son was taken from her, and he will, in all likelihood continue to deny this to the surviving family members.

I knew I shouldn't have watched this programme, especially when on my own with the DC. I feel so angry and upset. RIP Winnie Johnson, Keith and all the other victims.

Glitterknickaz · 20/08/2012 23:31

Just seen it.
I feel she's been horribly manipulated.
Why on earth didn't she pass any information to the police?

anditwasallyellow · 20/08/2012 23:32

I wanted to punch her at the end. I find it difficult to believe that the police wern't interested in the letter. And wouldn't she have spoken to other professionals at the hospital etc? Wouldn't she have just handed the letter straight over to the police? I mean it was never going to be handed straight over to Winnie anyway was it? Perhaps the documentary has been manipulated to make her look worse but she did say she was in a difficult position professionally when there should have been no question where there should have been no question in what she should have done.

Nanny0gg · 20/08/2012 23:39

She said in the article that She also informed the police as soon as Brady gave her those letters.

Clawdy · 20/08/2012 23:41

Possessing a degree does not mean she is exempt from being stupid, Nannyogg and personally I have no sympathy for her whatsoever. If the letter exists, she is guilty of appalling misjudgement, and if it doesn't exist, then she is as odd as she appears. Either way,she has caused extra pain to people who have suffered enough.

firemansamisnormansdad · 20/08/2012 23:44

Well said

somedayma · 20/08/2012 23:45

what clawdy said. there is absolutely no excuse for hindering keith's family's chance of some sort of closure. no excuse at all.

TheFarSide · 20/08/2012 23:45

I also read the Sunday Times article. In addition to what Nanny said above, it is clear from the article that Ian Brady likes to play games and has made similar claims before, to the extent that neither Jackie P nor the police get overly excited if he says he has revealed all in a letter. I don't think she is at all taken in by Brady - I don't remember her saying anything that made me feel this in the documentary. The documentary maker clearly got overexcited thinking he'd uncovered new evidence and tried to make a big deal of it. Let's not forget who murdered the children and who has refused to reveal where for so many years. I really hate this kind of cheap journalism.

firemansamisnormansdad · 20/08/2012 23:47

Couldn't watch the end, particularly in light of that poor family whose little boy fell in the sea and they' ve called off the search party. That sense of loss must be unbearable when there is no grave at which to mourn.

anditwasallyellow · 20/08/2012 23:53

But these wern't claims it was a letter and somebody should have opened and read the letter before it went missing.

If she informed the police at the time and they took no notice then why is it only now that they are searching her house for it? Quite possible that there was nothing in it but it's just been more torment for the family now as it looks as if noone will ever know either way.

somedayma · 21/08/2012 00:12

I can't understand why on earth she'd give it back to him. I doubt there was even any info in that letter and it's just more fucking around on his part. But that's not for her to decide

OP posts:
CogitoErgoSometimes · 21/08/2012 07:54

Not stupid so much as manipulated. Brady, by all accounts, is a very charming and intelligent man. A monster, obviously, but extremely persuasive at the same time. By way of entertainment, he's used various people down the years to keep his story in the papers, he uses us the public, and he's using Powell. There will be nothing in the letter about the whereabouts of the last body.... but he clearly enjoys keeping us all wriggling on the hook nearly 50 years on.

Kabooooom · 21/08/2012 07:56

If she had of informed the police at the time of these letters first being given to her, why has she been arrested and bailed for preventing a burial now?

AGilchrist · 21/08/2012 08:03

They said on the news (so no idea if it was TRUE) that she had not informed police. Which is why she was arrested after the programme was made.
At the press conference the said there was no evidence the letter exsisted.
Winnie was not told as she was so ill and they didn't want to tell her until they knew for fact it existed.
Personally I think she has been sucked in by a manipulating sick bastard. I don't think the letter was every written. I think Brady has manipulated her into saying it to get his name in the papers again.
As much as i hope they find that little boy and bury him properly. I think bradys ideal punishment would be to never print a story or show another t. Programme about it again

FrankelSaysRelax · 21/08/2012 08:12

The overall impression I got from the programme is that Brady is an extremely intelligent man who believes he is far superior to everyone else and entertains himself by making people "dance" for him, like a sick and twisted puppet master.

As long as he gets the oxygen of publicity he believes he is winning.

OLimpPickMeddles · 21/08/2012 08:14

She seemed to be an attention seeker - when Brady was admitted to hospital and she was in the car with the film maker, her phone kept ringing with journalists looking for stories. She seemed exasperated, but why didn't she just turn her phone off? Also if she sees herself as Brady's advocate, wasn't she acting unprofessionally and betraying him by talking about their conversations, and explaining in detail how he was force fed?

thecatsminion · 21/08/2012 08:18

She must have known that appearing in a documentary about Brady was a risky thing to do, particularly when she got defensive of him. She could have said 'no'. I'm sure she said she'd offered the letters to the police but then later on said she couldn't let it be opened because of her 'professional values' - I think it was slightly confused.

I couldn't believe that other fanny that had written to Brady about a theology course and then been to see him, and was boasting about how clever Brady was and how he knew he could get one over the psychologists. Just awful. What sort of saddo gets their kicks from talking to a serial killer?

Fourfingerkitkat · 21/08/2012 08:28

thecatsminion - I was trying to think of a word to describe that very odd guy but "fanny" sounds just about right. How creepy was he ?

She did appear to have been manipulated by Ian Brady. Not looking to be shot down in flames though, or defend her but is she not tied by some sort of professional code of conduct which may have prevented her from handing the letter over ? I suppose not if she was talking about their private conversations on the programme....
