to not want to go crabbing

My DD1 is desperate to go crabbing down by the local beach (6 miles away). We went away last week and I spent hours sitting on the harbour watching a crabbing line (in vain!!), I took her down to the local beach after we got back, but it rained so we gave up. She wants to go back this afternnon, but tbh, I've had enough of watching a line doing nothing and really don't feel like doing anything today, AIBU?

Aw, if she loves it I would take her. Have you got some good bait and a bait bag rather than a hook? Raw bacon is good, prawn heads are better.

I took mine crabbing last week and we caught 25 in an hour and a half Grin

How can you not catch anything crabbing??? All you need is a stick wit some string on the end, and tie some bacon to it - we always get hundreds of them.

Dont be a misery and go!! Kids love crabbing, makes some lovely memories for later :)

freddiefrog · 20/08/2012 13:59

We've always found the lines to be useless, the nets are better as the crabs cant fall off. And bacon makes really good bait.

My kids are obsessed with it and we go loads, it's beginning to get a bit old now

Ithinkitsjustme · 20/08/2012 14:14

I bought 3 lines with bait bags, and used bacon - everyone else was catching loads! On of the fishermen even gave us a (deformed) spidercrab in sympathy, Grin but we didn't catch a single crab in 3 hours!! (and she's 13 not 3)

I have never heard of this.

runs screaming

Floralnomad · 20/08/2012 14:18

We use bacon and if I'm honest in our house I have to drag my DD along so that I dont look like some sad old person. Great fun!

piprabbit · 20/08/2012 14:18

I don't mind the crabs, the skanky bits of bacon or raw mackerel make me heave.

limetimemummy · 20/08/2012 14:34

the tide times make a difference to how many crabs are there to be caught... when the tide is on its way in is the best time to get lots :) Spent a fun hour last week on Brixham harbour front crabbing with my dd, I love it :)

slowestwildebeast · 20/08/2012 15:57

I'm hungry for crabs now! Might go to the beach with my pork chop on a stick!

VivaLeBeaver · 20/08/2012 16:25

You're doing it wrong if you're not getting anything, either wrong place, wrong time of tide, wrong equipment. I got over 100 in an hour in Norfolk last year.

OldGreyWiffleTest · 20/08/2012 17:36

Sit next to her and read a book you 'ole misery!

valiumredhead · 20/08/2012 17:38

Yes take a book you old misery guts!

PissyDust · 20/08/2012 17:42

I love crabbing, less walking around and a guaranteed bath for DC as they end up covered in mud.

I was the crab police this week though because people were catching loads and then leaving them in a bucket in the sun for ages so I spent most of my time persuading children to tip out there buckets of boiled alive crabs and count them!

JellySwinger · 20/08/2012 17:45

The best bait for crabbing is Haribo.

EdithWeston · 20/08/2012 17:46

13?

Take her, settle her in her spot - then leave her to it.

You get a couple of hours to do what you like at the seaside - not so bad, is it?

Will you have to cook the victims?

valiumredhead · 20/08/2012 17:50

13? Why can't she go by herself?

HeadfirstOverTheHighJump · 20/08/2012 18:02

Do they like the fried eggs best Jelly ? Grin

We went crabbing last year, ds1 kept screaming (in terror) everytime he caught one! We used baby squid from the shop, it was okay while still frozen, very yuk after. We let ours go after, on the beach near a rock pool, it was fun watching to see who would "win".

Dawndonna · 20/08/2012 18:04

My kids have been brought up crabbing, at 16, 17 and 27 they jump at the chance to take their younger cousins.
Take a book, some suncream, some sandwiches and let her have some fun.

LineRunner · 20/08/2012 18:04

Is this for edible crabs? I used to go with my cousins poking them out of cracks in the breakwater and rocks, to sell. We were quite young and probably walked a few miles.

FutureNannyOgg · 20/08/2012 18:12

Seems a poor trade off to me, I'd rather eat the bacon.

lljkk · 20/08/2012 18:14

If you don't feel like doing anything then I would have thought crabbing was perfect. You provide transport, you bring a good book or even the newspaper, she mooches around & gets exercise & fresh air. What's not to like?

ihatethecold · 20/08/2012 18:16

Has anyone has been crabbing in wells next the sea in Norfolk?
I love it there but I'm waiting to see a kid falloff the harbour wall. It's about 12 foot to the water with no safety rail.
Hmm
We've had some very successful trips crabbing there.

lljkk · 20/08/2012 18:18

um, something that happened yesterday, somewher in UK, I turned off the radio before they went into too much detail.

GobblersKnob · 20/08/2012 18:25

I love crabbing in Wells, have done it since I was a child, but the dc's are fairly little and it gives my oh the heebie jebbies so we tend to go to Blakeney, we were there last week Grin

Methe · 20/08/2012 18:27

it needs to be smokey bacon! Crabbing is a perfect way to wile away an afternoon. YABU!
