to take food from the back of the supermarket shelves so it's fresher?

I may be eating it that day, but i still want to know it's the freshest available, rather than the stuff at the front which is more likely to be near its eat by date.

Nop i do the same Smile

ratspeaker · 19/08/2012 10:29

YANBU
I do it often too.
Especially if doing the once a week shop for FIL

ShiftyFades · 19/08/2012 10:29

Ocado is great for this, they actually give "fresh for a minimum X days" info. Better than supermarkets who just pick from the front, but they are more expensive imo Sad

JeezyPeeps · 19/08/2012 10:30

I don't necessarily take from the back - I choose the one which has the longest date. The two aren't always the same.

ginmakesitallok · 19/08/2012 10:30

why do you think that WBU?? Doesn't everyone do it??

ShiftyFades · 19/08/2012 10:30

But no, yanbu, it's what we all do Wink

MrsRobertDuvallHasRosacea · 19/08/2012 10:30

Always do it
Dd has ocd, and one of her issues is sell by dates and food contamination.
She has been known to bin the contents of the fridge if it's the day before the eat by date.

TidyDancer · 19/08/2012 10:31

I dig to the back with fresh foods. It's selfish, but I think we all do it.

AnnoyingOrange · 19/08/2012 10:31

I've taught my kids to do it too

AnnoyingOrange · 19/08/2012 10:33

It's not selfish. It means the supermarket will discount the stuff on its use by date and the bargain hunters will have it at the end of the day

Kayano · 19/08/2012 10:33

I do, I'm forever movin milk and especially bread out of the way lol

Sirzy · 19/08/2012 10:34

I alway make sure I get the longest date, why wouldn't you?

TidyDancer · 19/08/2012 10:35

Oh I do think it's selfish AO, although I agree with you on the discount issue.

Like I said, I do this too, fully in the knowledge that's it's selfish.

MrsKeithRichards · 19/08/2012 10:35

I used to always cringe going shopping with my granny and she'd be on her knees raking about for the freshest bread.

Now I do it.

FallenCaryatid · 19/08/2012 10:37

I do, I work ft and shop once a week. I need stuff to last as long as possible.
There are always enough people grabbing the first item for it not to be a problem. For me, it's the same as handpicking fruit and veg and checking for blemishes.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 19/08/2012 10:41

Doesn't everyone? Confused

I don't bother if I'm eating it that day but otherwise, of course I do! It's not remotely selfish - if the supermarket found they were not selling things in time, they'd change their stock practices.

I think it is slightly different if you shop somewhere small, like a little farm shop, to go rifling to the back. But honestly, Tesco made have this stuff down to a fine art, knowing how many people will but things with what dates on.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 19/08/2012 10:41

*must have, even.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 19/08/2012 10:49

I do it.

It always used to make me laugh when people did it in my shop (it was the Early Learning Centre) they'd have a look at a toy, decide they want it and then take all boxes off the shelf to get the last one.
They'd see me looking and would say they wanted it because it hasnt been played with and has longer lasting batteries in. They'd always blush when I told them we dont fill from the back so they have just grabbed the oldest and most played with one, but I was always nice and would run up to the stock room and get one from there for them.

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 19/08/2012 11:53

It's not selfish, it's sensible. Everyone has the option of doing it so I can't understand how it could be seen as selfish.

WhereYouLeftIt · 19/08/2012 11:56

But after you have got your selection from the back of the shelf, do you leave it looking like a bombsite? Wink

CockyPants · 19/08/2012 12:00

I'm training DD to do this in sainsbugs Grin

Fireandashes · 19/08/2012 12:29

I do this, and I also do it with sprays (eg body spray) as the front ones are more likely to be have been used as testers.

bobbledunk · 19/08/2012 12:31

Everybody does it, you are entitled to pick whatever is on sale.
