Talk about the straw that broke the camels back Grin

I know that I will get a resounding YABU and entitled but I could honestly just cry and cry Sad

I loved that kindle, I am stuck in bed most days (I'm disabled not just lazy Wink) and it was fab for keeping me occupied. I won't be able to replace it, my DH saved up for months and months to buy it for me

Things have been pretty crappy for us recently but I always try and look on the bright side and count my blessings, but this has really got to me!

So come on- bring on the YABU's Grin

Have you tried calling Amazon? They are very, very good at replacing them even if it was your fault they broke. They replaced DP's after he spilled hot chocolate on it. It's worth trying, the worst they can do is say no!

cocolepew · 18/08/2012 19:44

Oh no! Did you know you can download the app for free onto your phone?

glastocat · 18/08/2012 19:45

Aww may, I feel your pain. Did you ring the help desk? Amazon are pretty good about replacing them.

HolyOlympicNamechangeBatman · 18/08/2012 19:45

YANBU

What happened to it? I've heard they're quite good at replacing/fixing kindles if you contact customer services.

cocolepew · 18/08/2012 19:46

Oh yes, I've heard that Amazon are very good. Thats a good idea.

ToadsPornFrogsPawn · 18/08/2012 19:46

Contact Amazon. My daughter broke hers (cracked screen). We rang Amazon, and they sent us a reduced price kindle, provided we sent the broken one back. I think it was about £40, so a good saving.

GhostShip · 18/08/2012 19:46

Is it not covered on contents insurance op? I was devastated when I broke my iPad. Took it to Apple and paid 200 for a crash replacement :(

HolyOlympicNamechangeBatman · 18/08/2012 19:47

good reviews of amazon here!

whathasthecatdonenow · 18/08/2012 19:47

If it is within warranty you'll get another for free even if you broke it. I broke mine out of warranty and got a huge discount on a new one - lovely customer service rep sorted everything, and gave me a £10 amazon voucher for my trouble. If you go on the website they have an option to have them call you or for you to chat with someone.

MyCarHasBrokenDownAgain · 18/08/2012 19:48

Call them! Don't lie, but be as economical with the truth as you can, and just tell them you've no idea how it broke. How old is it? Under a year and I think you'll have a better chance under warranty. You've nothing to loose by calling them anyway! Good luck Smile

maytheoddsbeeverinyourfavour · 18/08/2012 19:48

Thank you all Smile

I haven't contacted amazon because it was out of the one year period but I will ring them on Monday, it's got to be worth a try Grin

whathasthecatdonenow · 18/08/2012 19:50

You can get them to call you straight away - you don't have to wait until Monday, I contacted them at 11pm on a Friday night!

Free next day delivery too - it arrived Monday 11am.

MyCarHasBrokenDownAgain · 18/08/2012 19:51

Ring them now, we had less hassle with the out of hours peeps (called at 11.50 pm one night, just to find out the opening hours (expected recording, shit a brick when someone actually answered) - think they have an overseas call desk, the lady I got was much more helpful than UK one :)

MyCarHasBrokenDownAgain · 18/08/2012 19:51

x post with cat! Grin

AGilchrist · 18/08/2012 19:52

What about insurance?
Amazon have been fab with us and our kindles. Dh broke his twice.

whathasthecatdonenow · 18/08/2012 19:53

Go to this page, choose troubleshoot for your device and it will help you through the steps to get them to call you or live chat with customer services.

coffeeandwine · 18/08/2012 19:54

Nooooo! YADNBU.
You've brought me out in a cold sweat just thinking about it!

BellaVita · 18/08/2012 19:54

Hey, I am on holiday (with loads of books downloaded) and mine has just gone kaput too.

DH did the online chat thingy with Amazon who were very helpful and have replaced mine free of charge (was still in warranty by about a week). They were going to ship it to where we are but said it could take about 7 to 10 days to arrive so we opted for home (have a house sitter) who has messaged me to say it has already arrived - only took 3 days.

I would message them, they are very helpful.

Almostfifty · 18/08/2012 19:55

Just because it's out of warranty, doesn't mean they shouldn't replace it. Goods should be 'fit for purpose' for a number of years and I imagine Amazon know that.

If it's not because you've dropped it or broken it in some way, then you should get a new one from them. Keep going at them.

glastocat · 18/08/2012 19:55

I had three faulty kindles before getting a working one, amazon were amazing sending replacements by next day delivery.

glastocat · 18/08/2012 19:57

Loving all the kindle loving sympathy on this thread!

NettOlympicSuperstar · 18/08/2012 20:01

That's crap.
My kindle is the app, totally free.
Do you have a phone that would support it?

topbannana · 18/08/2012 20:03

YANBU!
My iPhone is very sick and off being mended, leaving me with an old brick of a phone that, shock horror, makes and receives phone calls, and little else Hmm
So far today DH has had to put up with my whining that I cannot read books (Kindle app) listen to music (iPod) use the internet, take photos- OH GOD- THE LIST GOES ON!! I am like a woman missing a fairly vital part of her body, a feeling not helped by the horror of the brick ringing and having to take it out and use it in public Hmm
Its incredibly tragic, and the sort of thing I berate DS for "when there are starving children in Africa" but somehow I cannot help it :(
Hope you manage to get yours sorted ASAP!

BlendingIntoTheBackground · 18/08/2012 20:04

YANBU! I actually cried when mine broken on holiday!

Another bit of high praise for Amazon from me.

Replaced mine out of Warrenty for £50, but it would have cost £160 new (3G keyboard one) I called to see if they could repair it as I was steeling myself for buying a new one. Fantastic service! Arrived quickly and Yodel collected the broken one.

In the mean time you can download the app to your phone/laptop and it will sync with all the books you have already bought.

We had the app first, and liked it, so I got DH a proper Kindle for his birthday, but he actually prefers it on his phone, as he commutes and his phone is more convienient than remembering the kindle...So I got it by default and fell in love!

BuntyCollocks · 18/08/2012 20:05

Echoing others, phone amazon. They are amazing at replacing them. Can't fault their customer service.
